John Steinbeck Quotes – Someone who wrote about the plight of poor people.

Reading ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ and ‘East of Eden’ had a profound effect on me. I have recently read Tortilla Flat and thoroughly enjoyed it. He writes with such candour. The writing about the plight of the Dust Bowl refugees and their exploitation was an eye-opener.

If you’re in trouble, or hurt or need – go to the poor people. They’re the only ones that’ll help – the only ones.

That’s been my experience too. I’ve lived in poor areas of London and Hull and have been exceedingly poor myself. You always can count on people to give you a helping hand if you need it.

No man really knows about other human beings. The best he can do is to suppose that they are like himself.

What assumptions we make? Every one of us is different. Who can know what somebody else has been through or feels like? Who knows what their consciousness is like?

No one wants advice – only corroboration.

We all think we are right – but we can’t all be right. I enjoy having an argument as long as it doesn’t get too personal and abusive. It keeps the brain sharp. I have even been known to change my mind!

The writer must believe that what he is doing is the most important thing in the world. And he must hold to this illusion even when he knows it is not true.

So difficult when you are writing a book that requires so many hours of concentration and belief. Decades of lack of success tend to dent your belief. But I’m still writing and my books are brilliant!

It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.

The subconscious is far better than the conscious for solving problems. It just needs a bit of time.

Poetry – I Was But Now

I Was But Now

I once was an elephant

And kept my dreams in a trunk.

I once was a crocodile

With a tale in my tail.

I once was a giraffe

With my head in the clouds.

I once was a hippo

Wading through the depths.

But now I’m a man

Whose thoughts fill the world.

I Was But Now

This was nothing but a bit of fun. I was playing with words and ideas – trunks and tails. But then there was the glimmer of some greater depth of meaning.

These days we blog and our thoughts are transmitted to the very ends of the world instantly. Ideas are dangerous. They can catch fire and transform society. They can enrage, calm or excite.

Ideas are the thing that man does best.

We are desperate for some new ideas.

Ruminating on Roy Harper – The Book.

This is the very end post-script to the book – Ruminating on Roy Harper. It is complete, edited and ready to go! Should be out shortly.

I wrote it because there are many people who tell me that we cannot change things. We can.

Get out there and change the world!

We cannot do it alone. It takes a lot of people to bring about change. We can only plug away in our tiny arena. Our job is to dissent and suggest so that we can build a zeitgeist that will change the world.

For all the cynics out there: you are wrong. You can change the world and we did! We did not change it enough but it is better than it was. What we have to do is change it more. It can be done. We stand up and speak out. We put our head’s above that parapet and shout. We change our bit. We influence the zeitgeist.

These are not mere gestures.

Without all those positive dreamers, dissenters and activists, we are doomed. With them we have a fighting chance.

That’s why people like Roy are so precious. He may be a cantankerous, frustrating, mean old bastard, but he is our old bastard. He says it how it is and dares to challenge what is wrong!

This is hopefully not the end.

Blogging creates such a small world! Incredible! Thank you all my visitors!

P1040310

I have been blogging for nearly two years. I have posted just short of two thousand four hundred posts on a variety of subjects.

The amazing thing for me is that my posts have been read in over 160 countries all over the world. There is only two countries in Africa, one in South America, Greenland and parts of Indonesia that seem to have not tuned in.

I find it remarkable to think that I sit here in the north of England writing out my thoughts, dreams and visions; putting out photographs, artwork, poems and stories; sharing lyrics, books and science, and in nearly every country around the whole planet some people have tuned in and looked at what I have to say. In the blink of an eye a photo taken by me in Wales is being appreciated by someone in Peru or China.

Isn’t that simply mind-boggling?

We are becoming a global community!!

Here to you all – the one people of humanity!

Together we can change the world – make it fairer, more equal, better and safer!

Together we can look after the planet and save the destruction of the world!

Thank you all for tuning in!

Nick Harper Brilliant!!! – at the wonderful Ropery in Barton 2014

I’ve seen Nick tens of times in different venues all over the country but rarely as good as this!!

This is a new mature Nick, slightly more restrained, less chaotic and loud. A more thoughtful, humorous Nick.

Right from the start he set up a delightful relationship with the audience who warmed to his anecdotes, asides and humour.

Nick was in fine form, bending notes, doing impossible chords, mad tuning in songs, changing broken strings without pause all complete with a voice that soared into impossible heights. It was magical.

The new songs sounded great as well! And that album is out next week!

If you haven’t seen him recently – look out for him coming your way – it’s not one to miss!!

If you are unfamiliar check out his stuff on Amazon and purchase the great CD ‘Seed’ to begin with. You’ll end up with them all!

Check him out on You-Tube!

Anthropocene Apocalypse – a world crisis?

As the world population soars towards a projected 10 Billion.

As the world’s mammals have been decimated to 44% of what they were 40 years ago!

As the world’s invertebrate population has crashed by nearly half in the last forty years!

As the elephant and lion now join the tiger, rhino and jaguar on the endangered list!

Are we approaching a day when the natural world will be nothing more than a footnote in the history books?

Will we be showing our children and grandchildren the remnants of our wild-life in zoos?

Will we be pollinating our flowers by hand?

Does anybody actually care?

You can read about my own observations and feelings about this in my book:

Please give it a read and pass it round to all your friends. It is time we did something about it. We can alter the zeitgeist!

Optimists and Idealists unite! Let’s build a new Zeitgeist!

I’ve been through my religious period when I had faith in some underlying mystical reality, was looking for coincidences and building them up into mystical connections, was looking for underlying truths and wisdom. I was looking for meaning in life. I was looking for a universal mind. I do not believe there is one.
So if there is no god creator then the basis of all religious belief has gone.
The moral codes I find muddled and contradictory. They are usually so unclear that people can read into them what they want. People can use the texts to support war, murder and retribution as well as love, understanding, forgiveness and peace. I prefer something less open to interpretation and misuse.
The history of religions show they come and go along with all kinds of beliefs, ceremonies, religious garb and ways of grabbing the attention of the god or gods of the moment.
Our present religions will follow the same course.
I believe that history indicates that religion has done far more harm than good. It has no basis and is best replaced with a better reasoned set of values and structure for living.
I believe we can do that on a global basis. It is not just for communes or cults. We have mass media now. The world has moved on. Now is the time for idealists and optimists to set the zeitgeist. Now is the time for a new age of reason and enlightenment.
The sixties ideals can be harnessed to create a new age of freedom and respect!
Perhaps it’s time for you to stop being so cynical and join us in building that better world?
The sixties idealism was not ephemeral. It lives on in all sorts of ways and has transformed the planet. The Green Movement, Feminism and the anti-capitalist movements are but three. What made you think it was ephemeral? I have spent my career putting that fairness, equality and thinking into practice. The sixties idealism lives and continues to transform!
