The Death Diaries – Quantum Death

74 – Quantum Death

Can you have a quantum death? Death in two places? Death that isn’t death?

The world of quantum is much stranger than Sci-fi. Reality is nowhere near being reality. Everything is super weird. A while back there were experiments to show that photons behave differently when being observed. Now there is serious scientific talk about all matter having consciousness, about the human brain not being the seat of consciousness (but rather an organ that tunes in to the consciousness around it, some kind of sense organ) and not only the planet but the whole universe possesses consciousness. I’m at this moment reading a scientifically based article about planets being conscious and affecting their own orbits. What the hell? Science?? They now believe that we can change reality with the power of our thoughts. It’s getting weirder by the minute. Science is outdoing religion. These theories are becoming stranger than Sci-fi.

For me these ideas resonate back to some of my youthful conversations about universal minds and being part of some great consciousness that had its basis in Eastern mysticism. I remember tuning in to Jim Morrison of the Doors with his lyrics ‘I’m doing time in the universal mind’. It sounds to me as if science is tuning in to a similar concept. All matter contains an intrinsic consciousness. Consciousness isn’t a product of the brain. It answers a lot of things, like how can organisms like flies be aware while having brains the size of pinheads? And are microorganisms aware? That’s before we get to plants! Everything is conscious and aware.

When, long ago, I decided that all religions were manmade power structures with flawed doctrines designed to promote division and tribal behaviour, doctrines that did not shed light on reality and teachings that were based on ignorance and medieval practice (that was best kept securely in the past), I also tended to put aside my views on spirituality. Frankly, I find the concept of god risible. The biblical and Koranic stories fables and the misogyny and violence repulsive. They stem from a different cultural time and place. But when it comes to internal spiritual development and understanding, as through meditation and contemplation; that I can accept. I often find myself transported by nature, a sunset or a log fire. I have an affinity for nature and oneness with the natural world. That is my spirituality.

Perhaps the universe is stranger than we think? Perhaps reality is an illusion? Perhaps consciousness is a product of matter? Perhaps the weirdness of quantum is the norm?

So where does that leave death? If the direction quantum physics seems to be heading: into a mystical connection, perhaps I have to view death a little differently? An end and a beginning. Perhaps it is the end of myself as an entity, an ego, a living organism, a man? But perhaps it is a reawakening into the universal mind of the cosmos?

Wouldn’t that be nice?

So none of your religious nonsense – no heaven, hell, paradise or Valhalla, no god presiding over everything and dispensing arbitrary rules and threats, just a cosmic universality, a consciousness into which I would dissolve! Takes me straight back to my youthful ruminations!

Isn’t life wonderful?

I await further scientific investigation on the quantum intelligence of reality, nature of spirituality and the death of tribal religions!

Until then I’ll continue to regard death as an end.

The Ordinary is Extraordinary

The ordinary

                Is extraordinary

                                When new

Before the wonder

                Has been stolen

                                By familiarity.

Poetry – Energy

Energy

Energy energy

Flowing freely

Harmoniously.

Gloriously glowing

In unifying

Pulsating beauty.

Connecting

With rays, beams

And currents.

Radiating throughout,

Joining us all

Into one.

Opher 3.8.2018

I think I’ve been having a burst of metaphysics with mystical overtones. I’m over it now.

Marvelling at the universe and the human condition is a pleasure in life. It excites me. Everyone should be elated by it. But please don’t trap it in religion!

Poetry – Miniscule in Reality

Miniscule in Reality

Glowing dawns and standing stones,

Mystic storms, vibrations in the wind

And majestic trees.

Skies that swirl with stars,

Chasms of glowing rock at sunset

And crashing seas.

There’s a wonder at work –

A celestial spectacle of awe.

There’s a mystery in the mind

That’s knocking at our door.

Standing before the horizon

Outlined against infinity

Feeling large against the sky

But miniscule in reality.

Opher – 1.8.2016

Miniscule in Reality

I am always in awe of nature; there’s a wonder at work. Infinity with its swirling galaxies, spinning atoms and amazing mysteries of consciousness is inspiring, is full of majesty, is uplifting.

There is a harmony in a sunset, rainbow and the glow it produces. There is a spirit in the rocks, trees and seas. To sit beside the crashing waves and feel the breeze in ones face connects us to the universe. To feel the sun upon the face and bask in its benevolent warmth is to feel the congruence.

There is a mystical force that is natural, beyond religion, and integral to that dynamo of nature through which we are all one.

Calm and peaceful, without barriers as the vibration of energy

flows through and on, forever.

Poetry – I have been here!

I have been here!

I am here!

What more can I say?

I exist!

I have breathed the air,

Watched the sky in wondrous thrall

As it mutated

Through all its shades

Of extroversion,

Loved

And felt the ecstasy!

My hands have touched

The holy bark,

The soft flesh

And the cold majestic granite

With equal wonder.

My ears have tuned

To the buzz and song

Of nature

And I have sniffed the wind

Of fertility.

My mind has soared and thrilled

To all the wonders

Of life;

The awe of a planet,

The mysteries of

Atoms and galaxies.

I am here!

I have lived!

And I have cherished every moment

With you.

Opher 22.4.2016

I have been here!

So short a visit. Already the terminal is in sight. But what a journey through landscape that is breath-taking. What passengers to share such a journey. Such variety. Such talent.

So fortunate to have the senses to take it in.

And how I’ve taken it in. It is deep within me. I have soaked it up like a sponge.

I want to experience every last taste, every colour, sound and touch. None of it is wasted.

Above all I want to share all these splendours with you. Every moment filled with love – the sauce that cooks the goose to perfection.

What a statement.

We are merely passing through, stopping to inhale.

By the end I will be sated.

Sated and replete, full.

So short a visit – too short by half.

But we have been.

We have left our mark.

Poetry – There is a Mystic

There is a Mystic

There is a mystic

In the sun and sea;

A mystic

In a grain of sand.

There is a mystery

In the rock and tree

And in the grasping

Of a hand.

Opher 22.3.2016

There is a Mystic

I am an antitheist. I believe that there is not only no god but that religion is all about power, is man-made and creates more harm than good.

Having said that I recognise that there is a strange connection at work.

I feel attracted to the beauty of rocks, trees, gorges, sea, lakes and sunsets. I am not alone in experiencing these feelings. Our ancestors worshipped these things before they invented gods. There is a majesty about them.

I can lie on my back and peer up into the night sky and experience awe as I whirl with the stars.

I can peer up at the moon and feel some lightening of my thoughts.

It is no wonder that primitive people, without the knowledge that science has brought, would experience these feelings and imagine the power of moon, sun, rocks and trees as possessing the spirits of gods.

I hope we have put this type of superstition behind us.

But Physics has shown us that there is more strangeness in the quantum world than we ever could have imagined.

I believe there is a lot more for us to discover. We are at the very beginning.

I do not have other words to describe the power that resides in these things. There is a mystic at work.

I cannot find words to express the delight in contacting a human being, or an animal. There is wonder, awe and mystery. There is warmth and communion beyond mere friendship. There is something I will call mystic.

Poetry – Killing Time Before Eternity

Killing Time Before Eternity

We’re all killing time

Before eternity kicks back in.

On a brief holiday

Within this flesh and skin.

We came from nowhere

And we’re heading that way again.

Fortunately, in between,

We evolved eyes and brain.

We see, we feel,

We experience wonders all around

Standing on a spinning planet

With feet upon the ground.

We are incredibly lucky

To be conscious and aware

Of all the majestic wonders

Around us, everywhere.

We’re on a short break

From the void of nothing.

Staying here for a short while

In the realm of something.

It’s a mere speck

In the eye of eternity,

But we should grasp it

Most heartily.

For this time is all we have

To wonder and enjoy.

With all the enthusiasm

We can muster and deploy.

Opher 27.12.2020

Life is so short.

Experience is so limited.

But we have eyes to see, ears to hear, tongues to taste, hands to feel, noses to smell and hearts to love.

For a short while we have been afforded the privilege to experience the wonder of a whole universe.

I am determined to make the most of this brief window.

Every second is precious.

Poetry – The Nuclear Dynamo

The Nuclear Dynamo

There’s a nuclear dynamo

That runs the stars;

A vibration that

Throbs through infinity.

It’s a flow of energy

That pours from

A zillion suns;

A connect

That conjoins

You and me.

Opher – 23.12.2018

While being an antitheist I still like to think of mystical connections that science has not yet grappled with. So much is unknown.

I like to think of a zeitgeist, a mystical connection between us.

I like to think of consciousness being something more that biochemistry.

I like to think of a cosmic vibration connecting us all.

Perhaps it is mere whimsy?

Poetry – We All Shine On

We All Shine On

We all shine on.

Our words are whispers in the wind that murmur in the ears forever.

Our atoms throb within the brains of all who live,

And always will.

Our dreams fill the zeitgeist in which we float.

Our impact is eternal.

We enrich the zeitgeist of the world with every wish.

Our thoughts and dreams mingle in the void of forever.

Our ripples rise into a tsunami.

We are incorporated into the vibration that connects us to the stars.

For we have lived, desired and sought joy and enlightenment;

We have created with passion,

Loved with abandon

And painted pictures in the warm breezes.

That is surely enough?

Opher – 6.11.2019

When we are gone our bodies, artefacts, possessions and creations will all be gone. Our thoughts, dreams and memories will dissolve. Yet our contributions will remain. Nothing ever dies. Every word that sends a ripple of atoms to jiggle an eardrum slowly radiates out in ever expanding circles. In quiet moments we can hear the wisdom of our forebears whispering in our ears.

Our ideals also shine on invisibly to bathe others in their radiance and inspire hope.

Nobody ever dies while our echoes persist. We are absorbed into the vibration in which we all exist.

We all shine on – as John Lennon pointed out.

My Weird Surreal Sixties Book – Part 2 Chapter 3 – Something of Nothing

With characters nothing, something and eternity my younger self set out to explore infinity with a spot of humour thrown in for good luck. A mystical poetic adventure of reality

3.

Today was Wednesday

It was decided somewhere.

For why?

Convenience.

This proved extremely inconvenient

For all the parts that did not care

That now had to.

All of it did not care one way or another.

Boredom set in and created dissatisfaction.

Within this state of being

Or non-being,

A search was initiated

To give purpose to life

Or the state of non-being that passed as consciousness.

A being was created from components of something

With nothing.

He was given some time and space –

Just a little.

He was set a task

And given power

To find out what he wanted

And why.

The being decided to take on the task

And not just pretend.

At least that was the impression that was given.

The question it set for itself

Or had set for it –

Depending on your viewpoint –

Or simply wasn’t interested in –

Which was another view –

‘Was there another something in the Nothing?

Or was there simply nothing in the nothing?’

It interpreted this –

‘If there was something else then it is proof that I am real and exist.’

If there was – then how many somethings?

And could one ever be sure that there weren’t more beyond that?

It was a worry.

‘I am the greatest – the biggest and the best!’

He boasted.

‘Did I just dream it all?’

He asked in aeons of doubt.

‘Do I dream at all?’

He wondered.

‘Do you dream my dreams?’

To find out the answers to these and the many other questions that were written on the vacuum of the breeze, the being, who shall be nameless, and called someone, began to scientifically investigate infinity using finity as a tool – a long job.

He had the advantage of being infinite himself

But had never been told

So he never knew.

There was no other something to tell him

And nothing did not let on.

So someone divided into two every split second

And travelled out at the speed of light

With strict instructions

To report back

If something else was found.

Nearly fourteen billion years went by

In the blink of an eye

As a big patch of nothing was explored badly.

Still everything hung on

Waiting for an answer,

Placing bets,

Believing desperately

That nothing was not all that really existed

And that something was not an accident.

Nothing worried too.

For without something not even nothing existed.

Belief was all that stopped something being nothing

Or nothing something.

But for how long is forever?

When will we know?

There is still more than most that requires exploring.

Still just as much.

No truth in sight.

Not even a set of fundamentals.

We are anxious.

Did we send him out with enough senses

To recognise something if he saw it?

Would he detect different types of matter?

Energies or dimensions?

Perhaps the quest is futile?

What a worry for eternity!
