Mass Extinctions – the horrid truths.

Mass Extinctions – the horrid truths.

Before the first fields were ever planted humans had totally wiped out all the Earth’s megafauna.

The Mastodon, Giant Elk, Giant Sloth, Mammoths, Giant Beaver, Giant Sea-Cow and many others were all hunted to extinction. The first signs that humans had migrated into an area was the total disappearance of all the megafauna.

These creatures, being large, were easy to find and hunt and provided much meat. They were also slow to breed so they did not replace their numbers. It did not take long to wipe them out to complete extinction.

Homo sapiens wiped out all other species of humans and then set about wiping out the rest of life on the planet.

It is estimated that human beings are responsible for the extinction of:

90% of the large animals of Australia

75% of the large animals of America

50% of all the large animals on the planet.

We look at the early cave paintings and can only wonder at the creatures we see depicted in them. We killed them all.

But it doesn’t stop there. We are hunting the remaining large animals – the gorillas, whales, porpoises, dolphins, hippos, rhinos, elephants, chimps, orangutans and tigers. Soon they will be gone too.

We don’t seem to learn our lessons.

Our children will inherit a world devoid of the plethora of wild-life. All they will have are the seagulls, pigeons, crows, rats, foxes and cockroach – the creatures that have adapted to life off our rubbish dumps and dustbins, to hide in our sewers and slide into chinks in the wall.

Before we even became farmers, while our numbers were few, we had destroyed some wondrous creatures.

The speed we are killing our creatures is increasing. When will we wake up?

Fearless Taliban with kalashnikovs gun down schoolchildren! Religious fanatic attacks cafe!

The bravery and courage necessary to take on school children or attack a café is unbelievable.

Do we now have to have armed security guards in our Old People’s homes or Kindergartens?

There is a serious moral deficit in these people. Their brutality and mercilessness demonstrate the hollowness of their religious beliefs. They are sick.

Nick Harper Brilliant!!! – at the wonderful Ropery in Barton 2014

I’ve seen Nick tens of times in different venues all over the country but rarely as good as this!!

This is a new mature Nick, slightly more restrained, less chaotic and loud. A more thoughtful, humorous Nick.

Right from the start he set up a delightful relationship with the audience who warmed to his anecdotes, asides and humour.

Nick was in fine form, bending notes, doing impossible chords, mad tuning in songs, changing broken strings without pause all complete with a voice that soared into impossible heights. It was magical.

The new songs sounded great as well! And that album is out next week!

If you haven’t seen him recently – look out for him coming your way – it’s not one to miss!!

If you are unfamiliar check out his stuff on Amazon and purchase the great CD ‘Seed’ to begin with. You’ll end up with them all!

Check him out on You-Tube!

Population and Ecology

Population and Ecology

I can give you seven billion reasons why there are shortly going to be no tigers, whales, gorillas, orang-o-tang or chimps!

I can give you seven billion reasons, rising soon to ten billion, why there will shortly be no people.

I can give you seven billion reasons, and rising steeply, why the forests are being chopped down, the seas overfished, the air full of shit, the resources extracted, the water polluted, the woodland built on, the……………………………………………………

I can give you seven billion reasons, and counting, why there will be one thin layer in the rocks containing the remains of us.

The thing is that a billion is too big a number for the human mind to conceive.

Our planet has only been here five billion years.

Life has only been around three billion years.

We have only been around two hundred thousand years.

Civilisation has only lasted four thousand years and we have already created this mess.

What has caused this is very simple: too many selfish, greedy individuals leading a mad rush to get hold of more. Too many religious fanatics who do not care what happens here as they are busy planning for a fictitious after-life.

The answer is easy: start using our intelligence, harnessing our science and technology and electing leaders who are not megalomaniacs, sociopaths or war-crazed paranoids. We deserve to be led by sane, pleasant, helpful, caring people.

The first thing we have to do is limit our numbers before we leave no room for all the other creatures.
