Nothing funny about it!

Today’s Music to keep me IiiiinnnnnSsssAaaannnnNeeee – Elvis Costello – Goon Squad

I like songs that say something and have some quality of content. Elvis fits the bill.

The Goon Squad. Who are all these evil goons who kill, rape, torture and maim? Who mindlessly follow instructions from despots?

Today’s Music to keep me SsSSssSAAaaaaNNnnnEEE – Elvis Costello – My Aim Is True

Elvis was a breath of fresh air!! Great lyrics!

Today’s Music to keep me SsSSAAaaNnNnEE in Isolation – Elvis Costello – Armed Forces

I thought that this was particularly appropriate as Putin’s disastrous campaign stutters along spewing death and destruction.

Who are these people who sign themselves up for the Good Squad??

I needed something to wake me up today. I like a wordsmith like Elvis. He brings poetry to music! I like his anger and sentiments!

The Goon Squad – Elvis Costello

I think we’ve all been put into the Goon Squad haven’t we? Just as the wonderful Elvis Costello told us.

I woke up this morning with the latest news of Trump on the airwaves. The whole crooked enterprise of project Trump is beginning to come to light. That made me laugh.

The whole establishment is crooked. We are all sold out. We are all destined to play our role in the goon squad.

Trump, May, Farage and the rest of the shadowy ones behind it run the family business. It’s business as usual. They gather up the goon squad to do the business.

Elvis Costello Lyrics

“Goon Squad”

Mother, Father, I’m here in the zoo
I can’t come home ’cause I’ve grown up too soon
I got my sentence
I got my command
They said they’d make me major if I met all their demands
I could be a corporal into corporal punishment
Or the general manager of a large establishment
They pat some good boys on the back and put some to the rod
But I never thought they’d put me in the

Goon squad
They’ve come to look you over and they’re giving you the eye
Goon squad
They want you to come out to play
You’d better say goodbye

Some grow just like their dads
And some grow up too tall
Some go drinking with the lads
Some don’t grow up at all

And you must find the proper place
For everything you see
But you’ll never get to make a lampshade out of me

I could join a chain of males or be the missing link
Looking for a lucky girl to put me in the pink
They pat some good boys on the back and put some to the rod
But I never thought they’d put me in the

Good squad ….

Mother, Father, I’m doing so well
I’m making such progress now that you can hardly tell
I fit in a little dedication
With one eye on the clock
They caught you under medication
You could be in for a shock

Thinking up the alibis that everyone’s forgotten
Just another mummy’s boy gone to rotten
They pat some good boys on the back and put some to the rod
But I never thought they’d put me in the

Goon squad….

My Favourite Protest Songs – Elvis Costello – Tramp the Dirt Down

This is a song that deals with the odious Thatcher – the purveyor of hate and division, squanderer of North Sea Oil revenue, creator of BSE and monetary meltdown through her deregulation policies, destroyer of unions, destroyer of our manufacturing industry, seller of council housing, destroyer of communities, destroyer of miners, and scourge of public services.

We’re still picking up the bill.

I’ll certainly tramp on her grave if I get half a chance.

 Elvis Costello

“Tramp The Dirt Down”

I saw a newspaper picture from the political
campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously
in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child’s
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child’s lips
Well I hope I don’t die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I’ll be a good boy, I’m trying so hard to behave
Because there’s one thing I know, I’d like to live
long enough to savour
That’s when they finally put you in the ground
I’ll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt downWhen England was the whore of the world
Margeret [sic] was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn’t
haunted by every tiny detail
‘Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayalAnd now the cynical ones say that it all ends
the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it’s only voices in your head and
dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn’t angry with this pitiful
discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up
for punishment
And then expect you to say “Thank you”
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you’ve only got the symptoms, you
haven’t got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head’s like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down
the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord
your soul to keep
I think I’ll be going before we fold our arms
and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life
could be so cheap
‘Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They’ll stand there laughing and tramp the
dirt down

Elvis Costello – Peace, Love and Understanding – Lyrics fit for today.

Elvis Costello was part of the British New Wave scene that came out of the Punk of 1976/77.

The Stiff label was a leading Independent and Elvis was one of its leading lights – along with the likes of Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric and Madness.

This song was quite a strange one for those heady days. These were days of anger and fury where the youth of the day felt they had been thrown on the scrapheap. Malcolm McClaren had manufactured a new look and attitude based on the New York Dolls and the New York scene. It put a big wedge between the youth culture of the 60s and the Punk scene of the seventies. Peace and love were definitely not in vogue.

Elvis was always a meaningful wordsmith but this is one of Nick Lowe’s masterpieces. The lyrics are still just as pertinent today as we look at the rise of the Nazis, a looming war with Korea, the evil of ISIS, Boko Haram, A Qaeda and other radical Islamic groups, the Middle East Palestinian crisis, Trump and Brexit.

What is so wrong with peace, love and understanding?

Elvis Costello – Peace, Love And Understanding Lyrics

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin’ for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There’s one thing I wanna know:
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

’cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry.
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

’cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry.
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?
