Demons and Gods

Demons and Gods

There’s a demon and a god

An elf, ogre, dragon and a gnome,

All out of

                Our imagination.

We made them real,

Set them free,

                                To roam and rampage

All around our nation.

Sucked out of nothing,

                To terrify,

We placed gods in the sky,

To spread

                The all-time greatest lie.

To help us believe

                We live forever.

Created, not evolved

                And oh so very clever.

Unfortunately, it’s not true

                Another power game

To control

                Me and you.

As an antitheist I see religion as a power-structure. Right from its earliest inception in prehistory it gave power to the shaman.

The shaman communed with the spirits and brought back knowledge. Or did he?

The shaman created complex rituals and rites that gave belief and assurance to the tribe. Or did he?

The rain dances, hunting rituals, news from the afterlife – all just an elaborate hoax to gain power and control?

The most important person in the tribe – vying with the chief.

We created gods of suns, of rocks and trees. We created afterlives full of reward and punishment. The greatest crime was not to believe.

Religion preyed upon our fears – fear of death, fear of disease, fear of hunger, thirst and defeat. It offered answers to the eternal questions – what is this universe? What are we? What is reality? What is after death?

Religions came and went. Sacrifices were exacted. Blessings given.

When things went wrong it was always because the people had strayed from the path – time for more stringent worship. When things went right it was the power of prayer and ritual that appeased god.

Then came science to challenge superstition and explain the universe.

We discovered heaven was not above the sky. Hell was not below. The universe did not revolve around the earth. The sun was not a god.

But people are still superstitious. They need a crutch.

We need ritual and prayer. It’s a comfort.

Poetry – I Was But Now

I Was But Now

I once was an elephant

And kept my dreams in a trunk.

I once was a crocodile

With a tale in my tail.

I once was a giraffe

With my head in the clouds.

I once was a hippo

Wading through the depths.

But now I’m a man

Whose thoughts fill the world.

I Was But Now

This was nothing but a bit of fun. I was playing with words and ideas – trunks and tails. But then there was the glimmer of some greater depth of meaning.

These days we blog and our thoughts are transmitted to the very ends of the world instantly. Ideas are dangerous. They can catch fire and transform society. They can enrage, calm or excite.

Ideas are the thing that man does best.

We are desperate for some new ideas.

Poetry – I am a fly – a poem about life

IMG_6336

I believe ln the picture put together by great scientific research. All life on this planet is equally evolved. There is no hierarchy. We all came out of the first, and only, single cell. Life evolved over billions of years and went its different ways down trunk, branch and twig of the evolutionary tree.

All life on this planet is equally important, equally adapted, and equally evolved. Having certain attributes does not make us superior. Our arrogance and stupidity are manifest in our attitudes. The pompous are preposterous.

We humans, not uniquely, evolved consciousness. It is a mixed blessing (if I can use such a term imbued with religious connotations). We have used it to enrich, create and embellish our lives. We have used to create misery, pain and destruction.

We have been befuddled by our limited intelligence to seek purpose, reason and possibility where there is none.

Other, less intelligent forms of life, do not indulge in such esoteric fantasy.

I Am A Fly

I am a fly

All I desire is to find food, a mate, and a place to lay my eggs;

To avoid predators

And escape the heat and cold.

I am a fly.

I do not know that flies, trees and humans

All evolved from the same cell.

I am a fly.

I do not believe I have a higher purpose

I do not contemplate an after-life,

I do not yearn for heaven

or fear hell.

I create no gods.

I am a fly. My life is short

And I live it

That is all.

9 out of 10 cells in your body are bacterial.

It is estimated that there are 37,200,000,000 cells in the average human body. That means that each one of us when we are healthy house 372,000,000,000 bacteria. Most of these are benign – either commensal or actually symbiotic. Only a small proportion are pathogens and they are constantly being mopped p by our immune system. There is war going on.
When we drove out of Chunking on our tour bus we headed out over this great flat plain. There were hundreds of huge skyscraper structures. Our guide explained that the area used to be paddy fields but these buildings had been erected to house the huge population increase. Each one was home to hundreds of thousands of people. They were autonomous and functioned as a town with their own schools, hospitals, police, fire, shops and facilities. There was no need for anyone to venture out of the complex he boasted.
What if human beings are biological cities constructed by bacteria for bacteria?
What if our consciousness is actually bacterial consciousness? Our history and evolution directed by bacteria?
What if we are really being farmed by bacteria as their cattle?
I feel a Sci-fi novel coming on!!
