We boarded an old steam train to take us along the railway track laid by the Prisoners of War. So many died. The conditions were appalling and they were cruelly worked to death.
It took us deep into the countryside.
We arrived at the site of the bridge. There was a shrine set in a cave.
One could only stand and imagine.

I wrote this in response to the callous, inhumane way that the sectarian killings were being carried out. There seemed no limit to the desire to inflict pain. If someone could be tortured longer and more cruelly then that was the aim. The electric drill was the favoured tool. The only limits were those imposed by our imagination.
Humanity has a propensity for enjoying the pain and agony of others. At our worst we are vicious, callous and indescribably evil.
Every war sees its range of torture, brutality, rape and despicable violence.
We create tribes and gang up on each other. We bully, use derogatory terms, racial slurs and put-downs to upset and destroy others. We can be so nasty that we cause self-harm, suicides and destroy individuals We create stereotypes of whole races and nations that end up in wars.
The inhumanity shown to animals is almost unbelievable. I watched a film where a crew were catching hundreds of sharks, slicing their fins off and flinging the living fish back over the side. It was not possible to imagine the agony those fish suffered.
Round the world there are cock-pits, bull-rings, bear-baiting, dog fights, and badger baiting. The crowds gather to excitedly jeer.
In China they are reputed to kill the dogs by boiling them alive in their dog festival.
I don’t know how the torturers of people and animals manage to sleep. I don’t know how they manage to reconcile what they do with any code of morality, inner conscience or religious views. Some of them are doing this in the name of religion. Somehow they believe that their god sanctions such barbarity.
It almost makes me believe in evil. Except this isn’t evil. It is part of human nature. We did not get to be the dominant species by being nice. We are the biggest, meanest motherfuckers on the planet.
I believe we have to recognise this tendency and prevail against it. At our best we are altruistic, pleasant, friendly, loving and kind. That is the side we need to nurture. That ‘Evil’ side needs containing and controlling. We need laws, counselling, education and assistance to be the best we can be.
I believe we can create a better, positive zeitgeist and learn to live without needing violence, division, bullying, cruelty and evil. We can put it behind us.
We can become civilized!

Dolphins, porpoises and whales have brains analogous to human beings. They have language. They care for their children and have a family life. They are highly intelligent. They are also very sensitive and suffer pain.
Why is it considered alright in countries like Denmark, Japan and the Faroe Islands to indulge in gratuitous cruelty that is so barbaric it is beyond belief. It’s the sort of thing ISIS are doing – not civilised people. It is a frenzy of unbelievable sadistic, primitive viciousness.
Dolphins are herded into a shallow bay. People wade out among them, or use small boats. They are gaffed with a sharp hook while someone saws at their neck with a knife until they reach the deep spinal chord and bring their agony to an end.
For me this is no different to doing the same thing with humans. Imagine if I went down the high-street herding all the shoppers into a blind alley and then waded in with a sharp barbed hook, gaffed them and started sawing they heads off as they screamed.
There’s no difference!
Dolphins and porpoises are sentient beings. They feel pain. They have imagination. They should have human status and rights. This is murder.
In Tasmania I was taken by my friends Dylan and Julia to see the most idyllic Wineglass Bay with it’s cobalt blue waters. I thought it was called Wineglass Bay because of its shape but that was only part of the story. It was one of the places around the world where people carried out this horrendous act of slaughtering dolphins. It was called Wineglass bay because when this poor animals were being butchered alive the water of the bay would turn blood red. From the hills around it resembled a half full glass of Beaujolais. Imagine how much blood it takes to stain a vast bay like that blood red?
This has to stop!
Sharks are not the cuddliest of animals. You do not find many people who have one as a pet. They seem to have got a bad reputation.
Human beings have a habit of killing anything that poses the slightest threat to us. The fact that there are many more people die from bee stings than shark attacks is irrelevant. (I better not mention that again or there will be nutters out there killing bees!). It gives people carte blanch to kill them.
That’s not the worst of it. It is nor just that they are being destroyed in numbers large enough to threaten their existence; it is the way they are being killed that is even more distressing.
Many Asians like shark fin soup. it is considered a delicacy. They are not so keen on the rest of the shark so there is not a market for shark meat. Therefore the only bits of sharks that are important are the fins.
Huge numbers of sharks of all species are caught. Their fins are hacked off while they are alive and their living bodies thrown over the side.
What is wrong with people? Have they no feelings?
I’ve seen Nick tens of times in different venues all over the country but rarely as good as this!!
This is a new mature Nick, slightly more restrained, less chaotic and loud. A more thoughtful, humorous Nick.
Right from the start he set up a delightful relationship with the audience who warmed to his anecdotes, asides and humour.
Nick was in fine form, bending notes, doing impossible chords, mad tuning in songs, changing broken strings without pause all complete with a voice that soared into impossible heights. It was magical.
The new songs sounded great as well! And that album is out next week!
