The World is all Sci-fi!!

It seems to me that the driving force behind all technological and scientific development, as well as design, is imagination. Once something has been imagined by a human mind it inspires people to make it real.

The early Sci-fi writers described future worlds with sleek modernistic vehicles and spacecraft. They had descriptions of futuristic cities and travel between planets. In Sci-fi stories craft could journey faster than the speed of light, there were parallel worlds and different dimensions and universes. You could even travel through time.

Once the ideas have been invented human minds start working on them.

These days we live in the world that has been created by the ideas imagined in Sci-fi novels. The views of those early Sci-fi writers have been realised in the architecture and design of cars, in clothing and in materials used.

We have a a world revolving around computers, robots, satellites, mobile phones and rockets. We have been to the moon and are planning trips to the planets.

We have nuclear energy, supersonic planes and bullet trains.

Our physicists have discovered black holes, quasars and quantum. Polyverses are a real possibility and folds in space may enable faster than light travel.

We live in a world that people a hundred years ago would have considered impossible science fiction fantasy. If someone from 1900 was to come into our time they would be amazed. Our gadgetry would astound them.

It is quite likely that in another hundred years time many other Sci-fi ‘ideas’ might become reality. Perhaps advances in physics will enable us to journey through time or out to distant galaxies? Perhaps nanotechnology will alter engineering and A/I will have ushered in a new era of self-driven vehicles?

The world of the future will increasingly look like the descriptions in Sci-fi books.

I would suggest that it is the Sci-fi writers who have made it possible. They inserted the seeds of possibility.

If someone can imagine it then somebody else will eventually make it happen.

Inventing aliens

Inventing aliens is exceedingly difficult.

In the course of reading sci-fi over many decades, I have encountered many different varieties.

I have seen intelligent life on other planets represented as gas, slime, blobs, mechanised beings, shape changers or humanoids.

The humanoids usually have big heads, slender bodies, huge eyes and elongated tapering limbs. Some have tentacles, others hands and feet.

It is possible that through the zillions of planets in the universe that we are the only intelligent life. The Earth may be an oasis in a vast desert.

On the other hand it is also possible that life may be a common occurrence.

As a biologist I am intrigued.

The earth has existed for a little over 4.5 billion years. It took just short of 2 billion years for the first life to evolve. For the next 2 billion life was merely a bacterial slime. All life on the planet probably evolved from one single instance – a protein/RNA combination. DNA would probably have evolved later.

2.4 billion years ago these bacteria started forming oxygen as a bi-product and transformed the atmosphere so that aerobic respiration could occur and organisms become more efficient and more complex. 2 billion years ago the first complex cells developed.

530 million years ago the first vertebrates appeared.

4 million years ago hominids appeared on the scene.

1.8 million years ago Homo sapiens evolved.

Of course, we are not the only intelligent creatures on the planet. Intelligence is hard to define and we tend to anthropomorphise it.

If we replace intelligence with consciousness then we are inundated. It is even possible that plants have consciousness.

When I look at a human being I see this strange evolution reflected in their morphology. We are modified fish.

But what if RNA had never interacted with protein? Is it possible for some other form of life to have developed? Does it have to be based around carbon?

I have seen theories of other elements but carbon is very useful.

Even if life developed in a similar way does it have to have a four-base DNA code? Could it be six?

When it reached the multicellular stage, did it have to develop into a fish? Could it have gone down another route?

If it was a fish did that have to evolve into a quadruped and then a biped?

Evolution is a blind process – which is why our bodies are stuck with so many faults. Those faults – things like our single airway, our fragile necks and exposed brain, our digestive tract confused with our airway at one end and reproductive organs at the other – all could have evolved differently to create more efficient bodies. They didn’t. But perhaps elsewhere in the universe, they did.

Perhaps aliens do not have their brains stuck out on a fragile neck? Perhaps they are not based on the pentadactyl limb – formed from fins? Perhaps their reproductive system is separate from their excretory system and they have multiple airways?

I do not believe that ‘real’ alien life would be found in amorphous clouds of particles or slime. I think it would have a body and organs. But as to whether that body would resemble human beings? That I doubt very much.

It makes it fun to design an intelligent animal that evolved in a totally different way. That allows the imagination to work on what it might look like.

Some of us don’t fall for Conspiracies!

Anthropocene Apocalypse – Scenario 2 – The Population explosion and the future!

Anthropocene Apocalypse

In Scenario 1 the population continued to grow eating up space, wilderness and destroying all naturally living creatures. Technology dealt with the problems of food, water, energy, weather and even oxygen in the atmosphere. We lived in huge urban developments and the world is devoid of wild-life and natural areas.

Scenario 2.

The premise:

a. We realise the impact of our actions on the environment and limit our numbers, conserve the wilderness and wild-life, stop our habitat destruction and pollution.

b. We lay aside 50% of the planet for wilderness and wild-life. We do not allow roads, hunters or development in these areas.

We are extremely good at solving problems. We can easily create a sustainable future where wilderness and wild-life has a place.

The result:

a. We introduce contraception, education and family planning on a global scale and successfully reduce our population.

b. We use technology to produce better transport, housing, energy production, and food.

c. We do not have urban sprawl, deforestation, overfishing, or other unsustainable exploitation of the environment.

d. We raise the standards of life for all people globally so that there is no longer war, conflict or poverty. There are social services, pensions and sick pay enabling people to live without requiring large numbers of children to support them through hard times.

e. We produce technology that is not polluting and is sustainable. We have ample energy (probably through nuclear fusion and solar) and our farming methods are not cruel or ineffective. We can produce ample good food to support the population without encroaching on the wilderness areas.

f. The forests are conserved. Fishing is sustainable. The weather and global warming is controlled.

g. 50% of the world is teeming with wild-life that we can marvel at. The air, water and soil are not contaminated with carcinogens. We globally control the weather and global warming. Everything regarding conservation and pollution is controlled and enforced globally.

I know which of the two possible future scenarios I would prefer to live in.

The future is for our grandchildren’s grandchildren. In my own life-time we have destroyed over half of the world. I feel we are at the precipice. Will we jump?Posted in EcologyenvironmentExtinctionTagged conservationEcologyeducationExtinctionidealismjournalismLiteratureNatureOptimismPoliticsPopulationSciencethe futureWritingZeitgeist4 CommentsEdit

What do we do?? Who could have predicted that?

Forest fires, record temperatures, freak weather, droughts, floods, species migration, heat waves, sea level rises, glacier melts, uninhabitable regions, crop failure………

Who could have predicted that?

Listen to the Science

Listen to the Science

Listen to the science.

                We have the means!

                                Hope comes from actions

Not words!

Listen to the experts.

                We can act

                                But we don’t have time

To wait!

Listen to the sounds

                Of melting ice,

                                Of forest fires,

                                                Of frying creatures,

Not fools.

Opher – 22.4.2021

Listening to the frail girl who is called Greta. She may not be particularly charismatic but she has the power to move people.

Listen to the science.

Don’t be fooled by the right-wing propaganda from the ones who want to make more money.

The planet is worth more than all the money in the world.

Ignoring Experts and Rubbishing Scientists.

The cornerstone of Populism as espoused by Trump, Johnson and Bolsonaro.

The premise being that experts always get it wrong, are politically motivated (or bought off) and cannot be trusted.

The inference being that it is better to place your faith in populist leaders – who know what they are talking about (such as – there is no global warming, we can keep drilling and digging, chop down all the forests, drink bleach and bombard your body with UV light – get back to work).

The reality being that the average idiot on the street drinks bleach, thinks that covid is a conspiracy or caused by 5G, that masks and distancing are a commie plot, global warming is an elitist plot, that appointing a billionaire leader is a strike against elitism, that the UN is a conspiracy, that the holocaust never happened and the earth is really flat.

They would rather believe the propaganda put out on the internet and conspiracy rather than science.

So it makes more sense to believe that the world is being run by alien lizards who eat babies and Bill Gates is implanting microchips through vaccines than to listen to scientists telling us that climate change is going to cause catastrophe for both us and other life on this planet, that the only way out of this pandemic is through vaccination and we have to stop using fossil fuels.

The Dark Ages – The Age of Superstition – we’re still living it!!

Poetry – No One Knows

No One Knows

Beware the ones with answers,

Ignore the ones who’re sure.

For no one knows

What it all is really for.

They ponder the mysteries

Breeding answers more improbable

As they seek to pierce

The armour of the impossible.

But all we know

Is no one knows.

Their answers

Are all no-shows.

No one has the key.

There are no messiahs;

No texts that reveal;

Just power-mad desires.

So beware the ones with answers.

They know what they do.

They are spinning you a tale

Some would like to believe it too!

Accept that no one knows

And love the mystery.

It’s full of awe and wonder

A paradise for free!

Opher – 13.5.2019

There are those that say that you not having the answers is proof that only their answers are correct. Only they have the solution to the mysteries around us. Yet their answers are more fantastical than the mysteries themselves.

So beware the ones with answers for they know not what they think.

Live among the mystery and love every second. I believe it’s all we have.

I know not where it came from or how it arose – but I sure like thinking about it.

Poetry – Chimps with Large Brains

Chimps with Large Brains

Chimps with large brains

And capricious natures

Stomping across the world

With no limiting legislature.

Out of control;

Without limits or empathy;

And for the rest of nature

There’s no sympathy.

Clearing the land

Of all that has life,

To create a plastic jungle

Where only problems are rife.

What are we doing?

Creating such ruin?

Is there no way out of this cul-de-sac?

Is there no way back?

Opher – 29.4.2019

We might have large brains but we sure don’t always do things intelligently. We are our world’s worst enemy.

With burgeoning numbers and careless disregard we are leaving a heap of problems in our wake.

Have we the intelligence to put it right?

Science Versus Superstition!

Science

Science has only really got on its feet these last two hundred years. Before that we were in the Dark Ages.

The enlightenment took place in the eighteenth century. Only then was superstition replaced by science; only then was science free to really investigate the natural world; only then were scientists able to reveal the truth without fear of being burnt at the stake for heresy.

So we were able to say that the Earth orbits the sun; that we are not the centre of the universe, below us was magma, not hell, above us were a trillion galaxies, not heaven.

In two hundred years we went from horse and cart and candle, to electric lights, Maserati’s, space stations and trips to Mars.

We understood evolution, genetics, DNA, atoms, viruses, black holes and quasars. We found out about quarks, nuclear energy and how to vaccinate against killer diseases. We invented telephones, satellites, TV, computers and instant communication.

Back in 1800, when people just had prayer and herbs, life expectancy at birth was 35 years. 25% were dead before the age of 5 years old.

Today life expectancy for men is 79 years and for women is 83 years.

That is due to science discovering bacteria and viruses leading to better sanitation; to science creating vaccinations that have eradicated killer diseases like smallpox, polio and tuberculosis; science creating better medicines and treatments and science creating better food and living conditions.

Prayer and herbs did not work. Science does!

The only way that 8 billion of us can survive on this planet is due to science – not prayer or herbs.

Unfortunately we have not rid ourselves of superstition. It still holds us back. The religious fanatics forsake science for belief. They mistakenly believe that you can banish covid with prayer, that vaccination is unnecessary, that social distancing and masks are not necessary.

That’s why they are dying in droves in the southern states of the USA. They refuse to believe in science. They don’t believe in evolution and many of them still think the Earth is flat.

Science has even studied stupidity – unfortunately it has not yet found a cure for it!

While certain people believe that truth and education are commie plots there is no hope for humanity!

Science is powerful but it can’t educate the profoundly stupid!

The famous historian A J P Taylor was asked when the Dark Ages ended. He replied that they hadn’t yet; we were still living in them.

Let’s hope that we don’t get another Trump undermining science and experts for his own ends and promoting superstition, fake news and propaganda in order to gain wealth and hold on to power.

Let’s hope science prevails over ignorance!! Even the Taliban use mobile phones and Kalashnikovs.
