Science Vs Superstition

Science

Science has only really got on its feet these last two hundred years. Before that we were in the Dark Ages.

The enlightenment took place in the eighteenth century. Only then was superstition replaced by science; only then was science free to really investigate the natural world; only then were scientists able to reveal the truth without fear of being burnt at the stake for heresy.

So we were able to say that the Earth orbits the sun; that we are not the centre of the universe, below us was magma, not hell, above us were a trillion galaxies, not heaven.

In two hundred years we went from horse and cart and candle, to electric lights, Maserati’s, space stations and trips to Mars.

We understood evolution, genetics, DNA, atoms, viruses, black holes and quasars. We found out about quarks, nuclear energy and how to vaccinate against killer diseases. We invented telephones, satellites, TV, computers and instant communication.

Back in 1800, when people just had prayer and herbs, life expectancy at birth was 35 years. 25% were dead before the age of 5 years old.

Today life expectancy for men is 79 years and for women is 83 years.

That is due to science discovering bacteria and viruses leading to better sanitation; to science creating vaccinations that have eradicated killer diseases like smallpox, polio and tuberculosis; science creating better medicines and treatments and science creating better food and living conditions.

Prayer and herbs did not work. Science does!

The only way that 8 billion of us can survive on this planet is due to science – not prayer or herbs.

Unfortunately we have not rid ourselves of superstition. It still holds us back. The religious fanatics forsake science for belief. They mistakenly believe that you can banish covid with prayer, that vaccination is unnecessary, that social distancing and masks are not necessary.

That’s why they are dying in droves in the southern states of the USA. They refuse to believe in science. They don’t believe in evolution and many of them still think the Earth is flat.

Science has even studied stupidity – unfortunately it has not yet found a cure for it!

While certain people believe that truth and education are commie plots there is no hope for humanity!

Science is powerful but it can’t educate the profoundly stupid!

The famous historian A J P Taylor was asked when the Dark Ages ended. He replied that they hadn’t yet; we were still living in them.

Let’s hope that we don’t get another Trump undermining science and experts for his own ends and promoting superstition, fake news and propaganda in order to gain wealth and hold on to power.

Let’s hope science prevails over ignorance!! Even the Taliban use mobile phones and Kalashnikovs.

Poetry – Rituals

Rituals

Ceremonies and rituals

From days long gone

To sun and moon and stars.

Performed between the stones

As the Green Man

Peered from the foliage.

Ceremonies of fertility

Fecundity and survival;

Praise for the turning

Of the seasons,

The wheel of life.

Rituals of love

Rituals for crops and hunts,

For births and deaths.

Rituals for the unknown.

Superstitions

That if these rituals

Were not performed

The world would crease

And dissolve back

To whence it had come.

Opher 1.8.2018

We humans do love our rituals.

What would we do without them?

I love rituals as much as anyone else. But having a ritual, with all its pomp and ceremony, lavish equipment, wondrous attire, great pronouncements and even sacrifices, does not make it real.

The world did not end when those ancient shamen stopped performing their rituals. Neither will we will enter a new world because religious rituals have been performed.

Poetry – Scientists

Scientists

Scientists do not know what they are doing!

Electricity doesn’t work!

Evolution and the Big Bang – Ha!

They’re just a bunch of berks.

We know the sun goes round the Earth

And that the planet’s really flat!

The bible says it’s Adam and Eve

So that’s the end of that!

Scientists do not have all the answers

Or the missing link.

They argue amongst themselves

So we don’t know what to think!

We don’t trust scientists at all;

We’d rather trust our wits!

Global warming, deforestation?

We don’t believe the shits.

Scientists are a bunch of twats

They haven’t got a clue.

They don’t know what they’re talking about

No more than me or you.

For I believe in faith

It’s far better than fact.

It doesn’t have to make sense

Even if details are lacked.

There is a new age of superstition and ignorance where science is disbelieved. They’d rather believe in magic and old archaic books full of man-made cultural garbage.

Instead of confronting the problems and wrongs we are able to ignore them and pretend they are not happening. We can say that the scientists don’t know what they are talking about; they don’t have all the answers. We know better. Scientists are too political. They’ve been bought off. There is so much bad science.

Instead of looking at the great benefits science has given us we’d rather put blind faith in things that have no substance – religion and internet sites.

There is no truth. There is only belief.

Bollocks. Science doesn’t have all the answers but internet sites and religion are pure garbage. A good skeptical cynicism is fine but faith in garbage is foolish.

Poetry – Embracing Science

Embracing Science

We embrace science –

The Kalashnikov

Explosive vest

And the IED.

There is no latitude

Or room for doubt,

Or tolerance

Of any kind;

For it is written.

We reject the Hadron Collider,

Skylab

And the microscope.

We pick and choose

On our trip

Into the past.

What use for the Richter scale?

Or vaccination?

When all is God’s will.

Embracing Science

A fundamentalist is a person who sees everything in black and white. Every word is fixed. It has been written. It must be obeyed.

There is no nuance.

There is nothing to discuss.

Black and white. No doubt. For a chosen people.

Rejecting all other interpretation. Picking and choosing the texts that suit.

Of the thousands of faiths followed by mankind they adhere to one and reject all else.

A seat of intolerance. A message of division. A cause of hatred.

Yet the world is not black and white.

The world is full of colour, wonder and awe.

I’m An Atheist, But…

I liked this. It explained it well. I go a step further. I am an antitheist. While I do not oppose anybody believing what they like, I do not believe in any of the religions , think religion is harmful in many ways and would like to see these medieval superstitions done away with. I would like a more rational world where laws and ethical codes are globally implemented and subscribed to. I believe in tolerance, love and education, science, empathy and compassion.
