Listen to the Science

Listen to the Science

Listen to the science.

                We have the means!

                                Hope comes from actions

Not words!

Listen to the experts.

                We can act

                                But we don’t have time

To wait!

Listen to the sounds

                Of melting ice,

                                Of forest fires,

                                                Of frying creatures,

Not fools.

Opher – 22.4.2021

Listening to the frail girl who is called Greta. She may not be particularly charismatic but she has the power to move people.

Listen to the science.

Don’t be fooled by the right-wing propaganda from the ones who want to make more money.

The planet is worth more than all the money in the world.

Desmond Morris Quotes – A man who made me look at breasts in a different way.

Back when I was a lad I was greatly impressed by Desmond Morris. He got me thinking. I like people who get me thinking. I avidly read The Naked Ape and The Human Zoo and as a budding biologist and naturalist I was hooked. I found his theories on how human beings had evolved fascinating. Our sexual dimorphism was so extraordinary. Desmond made me look at buttocks, breasts, lips, cheeks and eyes in a completely different way. Who would have thought that evolving to walk upright would have made such a difference in focus. Before Desmond enlightened me I had assumed breasts were for producing milk. I had never seen them as substitute buttocks or lips as substitute labia. Suddenly it all made sense. The Human Zoo was also a fascinating look at human behaviour. Not only was it very readable but it all made perfect sense. I found myself looking at the world in a new way.Desmond is one of my heroes.

The city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo. We are trapped in a cage of our own making – an artificial world. We exhibit all the behaviours of caged animals – the violence, aggression and frustration. Biologically speaking, if something bites you it’s more likely to be female. They are after your blood to make eggs or your meat for their progeny. Us men know that women are dangerous. I viewed my fellow man not as a fallen angel, but as a risen ape. The sooner we move away from this idea that we are not animals the better. We share 99% of our genes with the chimps and gorillas we are presently slaughtering for bushmeat. The sooner we start treating this as murder the better. Artists like cats; soldiers like dogs. I like dogs and cats – and rats, rabbits, crows, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads ……………… Life is like a very short visit to a toyshop between birth and death. Far too short a visit – but plenty to delight in!

This is what I have to say about the destruction we are doing to nature and a way forward.

Poetry – Time we cared – For Greta!

Time we cared

Ice is melting – water rising

Up to their knees

And still denying.

Bird croaks its last fanfare

Frog’s last gasp

Of heated air.

We carry on without a care.

Heat increases – animals frying

Floods and droughts –

Not surprising.

Still they believe scientists are lying.

Concrete and plastic – land and sea,

I’m alright Jack,

Don’t worry about me!

Trophy hunting – forest clearing,

Sounds to me

That no-ones hearing!

At least that’s what I’m a fearin’.

Making room for bird and tree

Before they pass

Into history.

Buried under life’s debris.

But it’s always the cash that counts,

Stashed away

In large amounts.

Whatever they do, it’s the cash,

As long as they’ve got

Their share of the stash.

I think we’re heading for one ginormous crash.

Opher – 22.18.2019

I wrote this for the politically motivated climate change deniers! May they wake up soon!

Poetry – The Game

The Game

The game of avoiding catastrophe

                Played against an opponent

                                Who does not care.

What can be more important

                Than fighting for the future?

Jumping off a cliff

                Into the unknown

                                As the corals bleach.

Populations crash.

                An ecosystem

That took billions of years to build,

Destroyed in decades

As time runs out.

People are ready for change.

We are desperate for hope.

Opher – 22.4.2021

We are standing on the brink of that cliff.

We are unbalancing the ecosystems.

We are killing the wildlife.

We are destroying habitats.

We are polluting the world.

We put money before the future.

Enough is enough.

It has to stop.

We have to start to repair the world.

It is too beautiful to allow it to die.

Poetry – Shifting – Change comes

Shifting – Change comes

Shifting air currents,

                Later rains,

                                Drier vegetation,

                                                More fire.

Change comes.

Fossil fuels,

                Mass pollution,

                                Tropical storms

                                                Hurricanes

Change comes.

Opher 22.4.2021

We are reaping the results of three hundred years of abuse.

Our numbers are a bacterial scum rotting everything we touch.

The oceans and forests are not infinite.

We are tipping the balance.

Change is coming.

WE will not like it – not one bit.

Biblical floods, fire, plagues, drought, famine, migrations and desperation.

Change comes.

We are responsible.

Poetry – Consequences

Consequences

Skeleton tree, acid lakes,

                Small changes,

                                Complex systems,

                                                Drastic effects.

Lungs of the earth,

                Trees and plankton,

                                All else

                                                Is dependant.

Fossil ice to raging torrents,

                Bare soil to naked rock,

                                Abundant life to barren dessert,

                                                It’s for real.

Flooded cities, drying land,

                Burning houses, plumes of smoke

                                Walls of fire.

                                                It’s real.

People stricken

                Animals stricken

                                Forests stricken

                                                Climate change.

Opher -22.4.2021

The ecosystem has taken billions of years to settle into this spectacular balance.

That balance is one of life, climate and weather woven into a stable rhythm.

That rhythm is being unsettled by our actions.

As we trawl the seas, cut down the forests and pour our waste into the air, the water and on to the land, we disturb that balance.

Change comes.

The delicate system is disturbed.

It is that system that gives us life.

There are consequences.

Poetry – Our Future

This is our future.

                We tell it as it is;

                                As we see it.

For we know.

All the money in the world

                Is not worth the future

                                Of the planet –

Our heritage.

Opher – 22.4.2021

Too many people are making too much money out of destroying the planet.

They put profit before the future.

They do not care about the damage they do.

They spread their propaganda of denial.

They are evil.
