The World is all Sci-fi!!

It seems to me that the driving force behind all technological and scientific development, as well as design, is imagination. Once something has been imagined by a human mind it inspires people to make it real.

The early Sci-fi writers described future worlds with sleek modernistic vehicles and spacecraft. They had descriptions of futuristic cities and travel between planets. In Sci-fi stories craft could journey faster than the speed of light, there were parallel worlds and different dimensions and universes. You could even travel through time.

Once the ideas have been invented human minds start working on them.

These days we live in the world that has been created by the ideas imagined in Sci-fi novels. The views of those early Sci-fi writers have been realised in the architecture and design of cars, in clothing and in materials used.

We have a a world revolving around computers, robots, satellites, mobile phones and rockets. We have been to the moon and are planning trips to the planets.

We have nuclear energy, supersonic planes and bullet trains.

Our physicists have discovered black holes, quasars and quantum. Polyverses are a real possibility and folds in space may enable faster than light travel.

We live in a world that people a hundred years ago would have considered impossible science fiction fantasy. If someone from 1900 was to come into our time they would be amazed. Our gadgetry would astound them.

It is quite likely that in another hundred years time many other Sci-fi ‘ideas’ might become reality. Perhaps advances in physics will enable us to journey through time or out to distant galaxies? Perhaps nanotechnology will alter engineering and A/I will have ushered in a new era of self-driven vehicles?

The world of the future will increasingly look like the descriptions in Sci-fi books.

I would suggest that it is the Sci-fi writers who have made it possible. They inserted the seeds of possibility.

If someone can imagine it then somebody else will eventually make it happen.

Imagine!!

Just imagine what the world could be like if human beings were really intelligent!

Poetry – Imagine – a poem about fundamentalism

Imagine

Fundamentalism is a contagious disease that is inherited through a vaccination of ignorance, as one generation injects the venom into their children.

Once someone accepts that every word of their holy book is sacred, is the exact word of god, must be taken literally and acted upon, they are lost.

It is the end of tolerance and freedom. There is no discussion.

Once a parent believes that they have the right, in fact the imperative, to brainwash their children into the same doctrine, they are all lost. There is no doubt or questioning.

Once a person accepts that the only truth is the version they hold and all other ‘truths’ are wrong we are on the road to division, hatred and war.

Once a person believes that women a lesser breed and should be segregated, hidden away, disabused of rights and freedoms, and always hidden from male gaze, we have abuse.

Once someone denies science, entertainment, music, sport and dance we are heading for a totalitarian fascism.

Once we have a regime that accepts mutilation, torture, slavery, arbitrary execution and martyrdom we have a society without human rights.

Fundamentalism is a scourge of insanity that needs opposing in all its forms.

The world I want to live in is alive with fun, beauty, tolerance, variety, fairness, freedom, awe, wonder and justice.

Imagine

Imagine a world with no dance;

A world of silence

Filled only by prayer,

Where no music stirs the soul.

Conceive a world without fashion

Or cosmetics.

Where women are hidden

Behind the bars

Of a social prison.

Think of a world where history is denied

But which is trapped

Within a medieval system

Of primitive law.

Envisage a world without sport

Or fun.

Where entertainment

Is a sin.

Visualise a world where science

Is denied,

Ruled by superstition

And words written in ages past.

Picture a world where society

Celebrates slavery, martyrdom,

Mutilation and death.

There are those who believe

God demands a drab

And soulless life

Based on mindless recitation

And total acceptance.

I am not one of these.

John Lennon – Imagine – Lyrics about antitheism and anti-nationalism.

john-lennon-2-by-hoffman[144566] John-Lennon

John Lennon was a visionary.

I’ve heard lots of people covering this song and I don’t think half of them understand what it was saying.

It was talking about there being no god – religion is phoney – about the need to do away with countries and start thinking globally; about doing away with the greed and selfishness of possessions. It was about sharing, caring and loving. It was radical, revolutionary and brilliant.

The only trouble with it is that it has become so common-place that nobody listens to what it is really saying anymore.

Imagine

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky

Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You, you may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will live as one
