In the mid-sixties in London LSD was available, the alternative counter-culture was starting up and musicians were at the forefront. The drug of choice was cannabis and the effects of LSD and cannabis was soon evident in the music.

A number of clubs opened up to cater for these bands and their enthusiastic audience. These clubs, like UFO, Middle Earth and the Marquee, all equipped with light shows and advertised with psychedelic posters formed part of Underground Britain.

Jimi Hendrix exploded on the scene, The Yardbirds, Who, Smallfaces and others moved from Blues and Beat to Psychedelia with numbers like ‘Over, Under, Sideways, Down’, ‘Itchycoo Park’ and ‘I can See for Miles’. The Beatles were at the forefront with first Revolver and numbers like ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ and then Sgt Peppers. The Stones produced singles like ‘We Love You’ and the album Their Satanic Majesties Request with numbers like ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 Light Years From Home’.

There was a lot of cross-fertilisation going on with the West Coast Acid Rock scene in America. On both sides of the Atlantic the Sixties Underground was burgeoning.

The band that really sums up the whole Psychedelic sound was Pink Floyd. Their first album – Piper At The Gates Of Dawn – was so innovative that it blew everything else away. It was the brainchild of Syd Barrett who had been consuming LSD prodigiously. That was evident in the songs. They were full of fairy-tale imagery and Sci-Fi spaciness. The music went off into long trippy sequences with strange noises, loops and electronic sounds.

They were the house-band at Middle Earth and led the way. Other new bands came in their wake – Tomorrow, Syn, Mandrake Paddlesteamer, the Move, Arthur Brown, Action and Soft Machine but Pink Floyd were the best.

The Underground was roaring. There were clubs, Underground newspapers, events and a new camaraderie that sounded like it would never end. The tribes met at the Roundhouse for all-nighters and it was all a Purple Haze of wonder.

The psychedelic sounds got mingled up with Progressive Rock from the likes of Cream, the Nice, Traffic and King Crimson and even the Blues Bands like Fleetwood Mac. There were Indian Ragas, Electronic squeals, reversed tapes, loops and weird lyrics. It was a time of experimentation, adventure and great fun. Anything was possible. There were no limits.

Syd was the first casualty. Too much Acid. Then Pete Green flipped, Hendrix died and the whole scene began to turn sour and implode.

What was a wonderful experiment descended into a heap of wreckage, the idealism drained away and the music became drab and clichéd. The sixties was over and the positive vibe went with it.

My book – In Search of Captain Beefheart tells the story:

Some Images for Star – a Sci-fi novel

I was experimenting with images to create the cover for my Sci-fi novel Star. It was about an intergalactic Rock Star. I had photos that I had taken of Arthur Brown and the Moon and I wanted to combine them.

Matt created the image that I used.

Crazy World of Arthur Brown – Fruit Hull – a few more photos

IMG_6516I think Arthur is worth a few more photos if only to show off his amazing costumes. Psychedelia has never been brighter! It augmented the great music. What a show!IMG_6490 IMG_6494 IMG_6508

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown at Fruit in Hull – photos

Well it was an incredible gig. Arthur’s voice is better than ever; so powerful and with tremendous range and power. This was a psychedelic bravura.

The band was were tight they gave Arthur the freedom to experiment with his antics and I have to report that he is as lithe and flexible as ever.

The costumes were impressive too and we went through a few.

Arthur Brown has never been better. I have seen him live since 1968 and tyhe man is a genius! (He’s a really nice guy too – and came out after the show to have a chat, sign and photo! Superb!!

Arthur Brown Gig in Hull – Fruit last night (October 2015)

Arthur Brown 2

What an incredible gig last night!!

Though I was obviously still poorly the gig was stupendous.

Arthur was in top form. His voice is amazing. An incredible range. The act was different to that in Hessle a year ago and even better. The band is an incredibly tight set of musicians. They are all brilliant.

Arthur strode the stage, cavorted and changed costume regularly. There were hats, masks, facepaint and antics. It was quite a spectacle and almost matched the standard of the music. When you see Arthur you get to see fifty years of stagecraft, a wealth of brilliant songs and someone with one of the best voices in Psychedelic Rock. He’s a veteran but one who has not declined in power one iota. He’s on top of his game.

This was a stunning gig!

Radio Show Psychedelic Sixties – Just got back from the recording studio!

537 Essential Rock Albums cover

I’ve just returned from recording our second radio show. Mike is a great friend of mine. He used to be the Roadie with Free, Bad Company and Robin Trower. We’ve been messing about doing some Radio shows on Rock Music. We’ve got seventy roughly planned out. Our first show was Merseybeat and this second one is Sixties Psychedelia.

We’ve been doing these as 1 hour Radio Shows. So far nobody wants to put them out but we’re enjoying making them.

What do you think we should do next?

Rock ‘n’ Roll?

Electric Blues of the 1950s?

West Coast Acid Rock?

Punk?

I’ll get this converted to an MP3 and put it out on the blog as soon as I can. I’m going to listen to it now!

What an incredible concert at Hessle Town Hall.
Arthur’s band is the best ever and Arthur was in top form. What a voice! And what an incredible act!
The music was amazing.
I had a few words with the man. He is better than he was back in the 60s.
We had a real psychedelic experience!
Here are the photos to prove it!!IMG_7671
