Opher and Mike’s Radio Programmes – 50’s/early 60’s R&B

I’ve just had a great afternoon with my mate Mike (ex-roadie for Free, Bad Company and Robin Trower) going through the rich vein of 50s R&B for our next radio programme.

It was hellishly difficult selecting a dozen tracks. We would have had trouble getting it down to a hundred.

So we missed out all the Chicago Blues for a future show, then all the girl groups, then the Doo-wop and the Rock ‘n’ Roll cross-over, then the New Orleans, then the females and finally came up with a group of artists which created a range of brilliant styles that is indicative of the amazing brilliance of the time. You can get an idea of the quality when I tell you that Ray Charles and James Brown both got dropped!

We’ve selected our sixteen artists with a view to range and variety. We wanted some familiar and some less so. We love them all:

Arthur Alexander

Barrett Strong

Chuck Willis

Clovers

Coasters

Contours

Don and Dewey

Esquerita

Larry Williams

Lazy Lester

Slim Harpo

Tommy Tucker

Screaming Jay Hawkins

Sam Cooke

Rufus Thomas

Little Willie John

Hopefully there will be some familiar names and a few less well known.

We’re now sorting out what we’re going to say and put the show together.

What do you think so far?

Have a listen:

Anyway, this week it was fifties R&B. We had a great time writing, rehearsing and recording. If you like 1950s US black R&B this might be the show for you. We love it. It was the stuff that turned on the Beatles and Stones.

Oph & Mike’s 1950s R&B Radio Show

We have just recorded our third Radio Show. we are getting used to a recording studio now. Our programmes go out on hospital Radio. So we have a captive audience.

I am assured that it encourages the patients to leave hospital and go home!

I am sure that they only play it to the intensive care patients – the others can turn it off!

Lazy Lester

Well I’ve just spent a great afternoon playing 50s R&B with Mike Green. He used to be the roadie and minder for Kossof and Free, Trower and Bad Company. He loves his music.

We had fun playing all the old songs and putting together our next radio show.

After much debate we put together the following track list with a view to:

a. What we both liked

b.Variety

Screaming Jay Hawkins

Rufus Thomas

Don and Dewey

Esquerita

Slim Harpo

Lazy Lester

Larry Williams

The Clovers

The Coasters

Tommy Tucker

Arthur Alexander

Little Willie John

Chuck Willis

Sam Cooke

We were heartbroken that we had to drop James Brown, Barrett Strong and the Contours.

There were a thousand other essentials that we did not get too. But we loved what we had got.

Our Psychedelic one goes out on radio tomorrow. Hope the people in intensive care enjoy it!

Radio Show – Sixties Psychedelia – The MP3 of the show

OK – I think this MP3 of the radio show has loaded up. I’ve played a bit of it. It seems to have recorded alright.

I would greatly like to know what you think of it. It’s taken us a lot of doing but it was fun.

What did you think? Hope you enjoyed it!

What should be our next one?

Radio Show Psychedelic Sixties – Just got back from the recording studio!

537 Essential Rock Albums cover

I’ve just returned from recording our second radio show. Mike is a great friend of mine. He used to be the Roadie with Free, Bad Company and Robin Trower. We’ve been messing about doing some Radio shows on Rock Music. We’ve got seventy roughly planned out. Our first show was Merseybeat and this second one is Sixties Psychedelia.

We’ve been doing these as 1 hour Radio Shows. So far nobody wants to put them out but we’re enjoying making them.

What do you think we should do next?

Rock ‘n’ Roll?

Electric Blues of the 1950s?

West Coast Acid Rock?

Punk?

I’ll get this converted to an MP3 and put it out on the blog as soon as I can. I’m going to listen to it now!

Merseybeat – Opher and Mike’s Radio Show – This is our show about everything you need to know about the phenomena of Merseybeat and the start of the Beatles.

I’ve always been a Rock nut and lived through the whole era, bought the singles, the albums but couldn’t afford the T-shirts.

Mike is as nutty as me. He lived through and was a roadie with Free, Bad Company and Robin Trower among others.

We thought we’d do some radio programmes. This is the first. It’s on Merseybeat and the birth of the Beatles. We tried to do it as professionally as possible in a proper studio. We enjoyed doing it. It took forever but it’s come out OK. We think it’s entertaining, informative and full of good music.

Give it a listen and see what you think.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to download it. WordPress does not support MP3s. I will make the show into a video on You Tube and put the link here. That may take me some time!!

If you have connections to a radio station then we are interested in doing a series of these. We have seventy planned out.

Our next one is Psychedelia
