Anthropocene Apocalypse – The Elephants.

elephants african

When I first went to Africa twenty years ago there were big herds of elephants. The ban on ivory had been effective.

Their population has crashed from ten million to half a million. They are being poached to extinction.

The major reason for this is the movement of the Chinese into Africa. It has opened up markets for ivory.

If this is allowed to go unchecked they will be extinct in twenty years.

Friends who regularly go to Kenya report lone stragglers frequenting water-holes where a few years ago there were herds. What are the governments doing about it?

Tusks are modified teeth. Ivory is dentine. The value of it is only what price people put on it. It has no use or intrinsic worth. Once again we are butchering animals for spurious stupidity.

The traders, poachers and profiteers need locking up.

This can be halted if there is a will. There is a way to conserve nature. We can limit our numbers. We can protect animals, We can give 50% of the land to wild-life. We can prosecute traders and lock them up. We can prosecute poachers. It is not rocket science.

Anthropocene Apolcalypse – The rhino. Destroyed by Chinese superstition.

Rhino Dont-hurt-my-mom-Rhino rhino untitled rhino1

We are busy pushing the rhino to the edge of extinction for one reason – some ignorant, superstitious people believe that the rhino’s horn will improve their virility. Because the rhino horn is so hard they think it will make their penises hard. A bit of ground up rhino horn is used in Chinese medicine to cure impotency.

Sometimes we are floored by the sheer stupidity of some people’s beliefs. Yet millions of people believe in this flawed logic.

Rhino horn is made of keratin. It is the same substance as hair or finger-nails. It is in fact nothing more that hardened conglomerated hair. It had no medicinal value what-so-ever. You would get as much effect by chewing your own finger-nails. It does nothing for impotence or virility – nothing, nada, nix, fuck all.

It is not a cure for impotence.

Yet the incredible rhino is being mercilessly hunted to extinction for a ridiculous belief, a discredited superstition.

It is about time that we started caring for the plants and animals around us on this beautiful planet. It is about time we left this primitive superstition behind us. A lot of Chines medicine is superstitious quackery with no medical foundation.

Let us take the good stuff out of the Chinese practice and test it properly. Some of it has a solid foundation in herbal remedy. Some of it is primitive nonsense. Some is poisonous rubbish and some is destroying our wild-life.

Ban Chinese medicine until it has been properly scientifically tested. Any Chinese herbalists who are stocking parts of animals from endangered animals should be locked up for a long time.

Anthropocene Apocalypse – The Tiger – Chinese quackery.

Tiger-Wallpapers-Wallpapers-fever Tiger-roar Tiger_in_training___O

The tiger is a magnificent beast. It is a formidable killer, a beautifully stream-lined killing machine. Evolution has honed it into a cold, calculated hunter, a biological specimen of speed and strength that is irresistible. It comes like a ton of muscle, sinew, tooth and claw with jaws that can crush your skull and claws that can rip out your entrails with one slash.

That is its problem. People do not like being eaten.

In the natural world the balance of nature is maintained by the delicate interactions of carnivores, herbivores and plants. If there are too many herbivores the vegetation is eaten down and the land becomes arid desert (such as overgrazing in the Sahara). The carnivores keep the numbers down. It is in equilibrium.

Mankind has systematically targeted any animal that threatens him. It is natural instinct. Unfortunately our numbers are now so out of control that we are encroaching into every corner of the world, chopping down the tress, destroying the habitat and butchering the animals.

We are not leaving any room for the rest of the animals. In the last thirty years the mammals population of the world has been reduced by 56%. That is staggering. If that is allowed to continue we will destroy every last wild animal.

The few tigers left are being conserved. Unfortunately they are being poached. They are used in quack Chinese medicine. This is in the mistaken belief that a bit of powdered tiger bone will increase a man’s virility and libido. Tiger penises are also in big demand for the same reason. This is utter bollocks.

This is ironic as the last thing we need is more human virility. There’s too many of us by far.

I suggest that the only demand for tiger penises should come from female tigers.

I suggest we put aside 50% of the planet for the wild-life and protect their habitat. 50% of the world should be plenty for us!

I do not want to see pictures like this:

Anthropocene Apocalypse. Chimpanzees – our closest relatives.

The Chimps are hominids just like us. We share 99% of our coded DNA with chimps. We evolved from a common ancestor around 3-4 million years ago. That is recent.

There are two species of chimps. The Bonobo is presently on the verge of being wiped out.

We are really the third species of chimp. We have slight evolutionary modifications. We have evolved bigger brains and lost a bit of fur.

Chimps can use tools and can learn to speak a number of words. They exhibit a lot of the emotional complexities and learning behaviour of humans.

Presently, as our numbers surge and our lust for food, timber and land increases, we are destroying their habitat and butchering them for bush-meat.

We need to start caring for our wild-life and limiting our numbers. We are destroying the planet.

Democracy – The long and often bloody fight for freedom – The Chartists.

Chartists
The Chartist aims were simple; they wanted one man one vote for all men over the age of twenty one who were sane and not criminals and payment for MPs (So that those other than the extremely wealthy could stand).
That sounds very reasonable to me. I mean it wasn’t as if they were asking for votes for women. Heaven help us if anyone thought that women might be intelligent, knowledgeable or able to exercise the right to vote.
But no. Even this step was thought a step too far. The establishment believed that if you allowed the poor to vote they might vote for things that would stop them being poor. The only way they could be richer was by taking money out of the pockets of the wealthy. The idea was preposterous. Equality!! Freedom!!! Once one lot had it the rest would follow!! Before you knew it the eighteen year olds and women would be after the vote!! And then what??? The country would go to the dogs!!
Giving the vote to ordinary people was asking for trouble it threatened the status quo and had to be resisted.
We are only talking about the mid nineteenth century here. It’s not a thousand years ago. This was the time when only the wealthy were allowed to vote. Strangely they always voted to protect their own interests and keep ordinary people down. Inequality was rampant.
The Chartists did not believe in revolution or violence. They wanted to exert their power by sheer force of numbers. Their idea was to hold mass meetings and sign petitions. These petitions were signed by millions or ordinary people.
They demanded justice and empowerment
They wanted the right for all men to have a vote. For that to be made in secret and for the representation through the country to be fair.
It became a mass movement, particularly in the North, Midlands and South Wales.
Rejection of their demands by government led to strikes. There were some outbreaks of violence. The State hit back by imprisoning hundreds.
The Church, to its discredit, stayed out of the argument.
In 1848 the Chartists held a protest rally on Kennington Common attended by upwards of 150,000. A petition of an incredible 6 Million was handed in demanding the right to vote. It was ignored. The government ordered the deployment of troops and was prepared for an uprising. They feared a revolution along the lines of the continental revolutions.
It looked like the Peterloo massacre on a larger scale!
In the event it passed peacefully.
The Chartists did not achieve reform but they set a tone.
It wasn’t until 1867 that urban working men were given the vote and not until 1918 that we achieved one man one vote. We haven’t yet had a hundred years of power!

The rights of women took a lot more struggle and effort.

The rights we have are the result of the efforts of millions!! We should exercise them with great care. They are easily removed.

Democracy – The long and often bloody fight for freedom – The Levellers.

Levellers lilburnepriz
The Levellers lead by John Lilburn, Richard Overton and William Walwyn, were a political group who grew out of a faction within the New Model Army during the Civil War in 1647.
They stood for all men to have the right to vote, equality before the law and freedom to choose one’s religion.

Some were imprisoned in the Tower others were shot.

It is worth noting that we lived in a theocracy where there was no freedom to dissent from belief. The reward for not believing was death.

It is also worth noting that the establishment held the wealth and power. The ordinary people were exploited. The establishment were and still are against democracy. They believed that if ordinary people had the vote they would vote themselves a bigger share of the wealth and power. If so many people took more then there would be less for those at the top.

Nowadays we do not yet have democracy. The establishment owns the media and controls the news. As Goebbels said – The people will believe what they are told. He who controls the information controls the minds of the people.

All our power comes from blood, passion and hard fought sacrifice.

Peace, Love and Happiness.

Peace Love and Happiness

What this world needs now is a big dollop of love

Spread like honey over toast

A cuddle and a hug with the warmth of a cosy bath

That stretches from coast to coast

A welcoming smile and a helping hand

To show we all do really care

The gentleness of touch of a passing breeze

To show we’re always there

What this world needs is peace and harmony

To melt away the greed

A shared drink and meal with tinkling laugh

To show we are all agreed

For love can thaw the hardest heart

If we put aside our hate

If we join together with respect and pride

We can surely improve our fate

Peace love and happiness

Is that too much to ask?

I’ll join with you if you’ll join with me

Together there’s a task.

It’s a job that is worth doing

To improve our sad old world

Peace love and happiness

Is worth much more than gold

Opher 17.1.15

Sorry – it’s the best I could do on Saturday morning. The sentiments are there. I believe that if we build a positive zeitgeist together we can achieve anything. Right now there is a lot that needs doing. There’s far too much hatred, war, terrorism, fanaticism, deforestation, destruction, overpopulation, hunger, poverty, inequality and despair.

We need to work together across the world to create a happy world.

What are the really big question?

Universe

Is there a god?

Where do we come from?

Where do we go after death?

What is the purpose of life?

Will we destroy ourselves?

Will we destroy the planet?

Must there always be poverty?

Must there always be inequality?

Most people avoid talking about the big issues. They prefer talking about fashion, love, sex or relationships. I like big issues.

I do not mind if you think diametrically opposite to how I do. We can still be friends. Agreement is for wimps. I like argument.

As an antitheist I believe religion has prevented us from dealing with the big issues of the day. I do not believe there is a god. The destruction of the planet is due to our greed and selfishness. There does not have to be poverty and inequality. There is because we choose to make it that way. The people who run the world are greedy and selfish. They create systems that are unfair for their own profit.

We can solve all the big issues that confront us if we have the will.

I think we need to create a more positive zeitgeist and put all the problems right.

Religion has no answers?

galaxies

Q. Where does the universe come from?

A. God created it  (so where did God come from? Who created God? What was there before God?)

Q. What happens after death?

A. There is an afterlife. (For ever? What on earth would we do for ever? Where is this place? What are we like there?)

Q. What happens if you break the religious laws?

A. You go to hell to be tormented and tortured forever. (Sounds like the most cruel torture thought up by a psychopath. An eternity of torture! Worse than any Hitler could conceive!)

Q. Do prayers get answered?

A. Yes (then why do the most pious people in the world live in such poverty?)

Q. Was the whole universe made just for human beings?

A. Yes (What all those zillions of galaxies for the benefit of a small tribe of apes living on a minor planet in a below average galaxy stuck out on a wisp of a spiral arm? – You must be joking!)

Q. Do we meet up with all our dead friends and relatives in heaven?

A. Yes  (what do they look like? Are they spirits? What age are they? Do they have memories? Is there reincarnation?)

Q Does God forgive all your sins?

A. Yes (What even if I went out and raped and ate babies I could ask for forgiveness and go to heaven while a non-believer who has led a saintly life is doomed to ever-lasting hell-fire?)

The more I look into religion the more it looks like a human construct of wishful thinking.

In truth we are big apes whose brain has evolved to look for patterns and find answers. When confronted with the big frightening questions we are consoled by answers that satisfy us. When the simple answers are two transparent we make more and more layers of complex answers until we befuddle ourselves in mystery.

Seemingly some people believe that this world we live in is not real. There is a mystical element to life that we cannot understand. God’s purpose for us is beyond our understanding.

I say that sounds very convenient.

I do not believe in God. I find the majestic wonder of the universe awe-inspiring and I want to understand it, marvel at it and find out how it works. I believe it started with the Big Bang that had no need of a creator. I believe I am an ape who has evolved from other forms of life over billions of years. My body is flawed because it is an accident. My wonderful consciousness is no less incredible because it is the product of evolution. Indeed I find that even more stupendous.

Life is wonderful and I savour it. It will end and I will no longer be aware. My aim is to enjoy my life and seek fulfilment in creativity, exploration, improving things for other apes and animals and wondering at the beauty and awe. That’s enough for me.

Just think of our potential?

MountainGorilla

If you can just imagine for one minute the potential of human beings. If we were for once able to put aside the hatred, greed, selfishness, religious and political fanaticism, racism, and arrogance and pool our mental resources to deal with the world’s problems we could solve anything.

World Population crisis.

War.

Religious conflict.

Poverty.

Third World exploitation.

Clash of political ideology.

Environmental devastation.

Energy crisis.

Limited resources.

There’s not a single thing that there isn’t a solution to. All it takes is the will, the financial resources, political will and unity.

I put my faith in the United Nations charter of Human Rights. If we do not start to think globally then we have no hope.

My greatest sorrow is for the billions of animals that we are decimating on a daily basis. We are butchering these wild animals for food, destroying their habitat, taking over their territory, eating their food, shooting them for pleasure and leaving them nowhere to go. I fear we are at a cross-roads. If we do not start to address the issues right now it will be too late for so many of them. I personally do not want to live on a world where we are responsible for mass extinction. It’s too horrible to contemplate.

Help form a positive zeitgeist. Help put it right before it is too late!

I believe we can make a difference.
