In 1945, I shared Labour’s goal of world peace. Now, aged 95, I’m closer to despair

In 1945, when I made my first contribution to the election of a Labour government, the party manifesto Let Us Face the Future looked forward to a “world of progress and peace”. The UN was founded, in the words of its charter, “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”. And the UK, as a member of the UN security council, was tasked with the implementation of that noble aim. What a contrast with today: global military spending the highest ever at $2.44tn; wars galore; and the Conservatives and Labour banging the war drums (UK to boost defence spending to 2.5% of GDP, Sunak says, 23 April).

I have often been downhearted since then, but now, at 95, I am closer to absolute despair. When are people going to learn to live together without killing one another and squandering precious resources on the means to do so? And when are they going to get rid of leaders who promote war as an answer to their problems? What everyone should be demanding is a global ceasefire and a concerted programme to tackle the existential threats to mankind.

Peace Love and Happiness

What this world needs now is a big dollop of love

Spread like honey over toast

A cuddle and a hug with the warmth of a cosy bath

That stretches from coast to coast

A welcoming smile and a helping hand

To show we all do really care

The gentleness of touch of a passing breeze

To show we’re always there

What this world needs is peace and harmony

To melt away the greed

A shared drink and meal with tinkling laugh

To show we are all agreed

For love can thaw the hardest heart

If we put aside our hate

If we join together with respect and pride

We can surely improve our fate

Peace love and happiness

Is that too much to ask?

I’ll join with you if you’ll join with me

Together there’s a task.

It’s a job that is worth doing

To improve our sad old world

Peace love and happiness

Is worth much more than gold

Sorry – it’s the best I could do on Saturday morning. The sentiments are there. I believe that if we build a positive zeitgeist together we can achieve anything. Right now there is a lot that needs doing. There’s far too much hatred, war, terrorism, fanaticism, deforestation, destruction, overpopulation, hunger, poverty, inequality and despair.

We need to work together across the world to create a happy world.
