New Tory Government more ideologically dangerous than Thatcher?

Thatcher was strident and divisive. She unleashed a huge divisive backlash.

Cameron is the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

If there is not sufficient opposition to this three pronged attack on democracy we will be looking effectively at a tyranny.

If the Tories control the news they control the minds.

If they bankrupt the opposition they have no opposition.

If they castrate the unions the bosses can impose what they like on ordinary working people.

If we look back through history from the Magna Carta, through the chartists, Swing riots, suffragettes, Peterloo massacre, the enclosures, slavery, Luddites, Diggers and union movement, we see that every right, every freedom, every vote, every improvement in pay and conditions has had to be fought for and paid for with blood. Many thousands of people died in order for us to have the freedoms we enjoy.

‘Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground’.

Yet we blindly walk into an era when those hard-fought for rights are quietly taken away from us.

Is there no opposition?

Is there an ideological three-pronged attack on Democracy in Britain?

After a brief lull we find the new government bringing into being three major attacks on democracy:

  • There is proposed legislation on union opt-in funding that would severely reduce the Labour Party funding and effectively castrate the opposition.
  • There is proposed legislation on union strike action that would effectively rule out striking altogether (if parliament was elected on the same basis few MPs would ever be elected and the Tories certainly wouldn’t have a government).
  • There is a move to break up the BBC which, for all its faults, has been a bastion of unbiased reporting.

Are we looking at an era where, through ideological legislation, we are looking at a one party State?

Are we looking at legislation that will make the unions impotent so that businesses can drive up profits at the expense of workers conditions and pay?

Are we looking at the control of the news by big business corporations who can spin it to suit themselves?

A democracy can only survive when there is unbiased information and a fair voting system, where workers have the right to withdraw labour and demand fair treatment.

Are we looking at the end of any pretence at democracy?

Democracy – The long and often bloody fight for freedom – The Levellers.

Levellers lilburnepriz
The Levellers lead by John Lilburn, Richard Overton and William Walwyn, were a political group who grew out of a faction within the New Model Army during the Civil War in 1647.
They stood for all men to have the right to vote, equality before the law and freedom to choose one’s religion.

Some were imprisoned in the Tower others were shot.

It is worth noting that we lived in a theocracy where there was no freedom to dissent from belief. The reward for not believing was death.

It is also worth noting that the establishment held the wealth and power. The ordinary people were exploited. The establishment were and still are against democracy. They believed that if ordinary people had the vote they would vote themselves a bigger share of the wealth and power. If so many people took more then there would be less for those at the top.

Nowadays we do not yet have democracy. The establishment owns the media and controls the news. As Goebbels said – The people will believe what they are told. He who controls the information controls the minds of the people.

All our power comes from blood, passion and hard fought sacrifice.
