Roy Harper – One of Those Days in England pt. 2-10 – lyrics of an epic song with a wide spectrum of thought, controversy, history and sentiment.

Roy has never been one for producing a short snappy Pop song. Most of his early albums feature an epic song that is far-reaching and has a scope sufficient to cover the gamut of society, the universe and history.

We have been regaled with the poetic visions of McGoohan’s Blues, I Hate the Whiteman, The Lord’s Prayer, The Game, Me and My Woman, Work of Heart and Burn The World.

Each one of those songs is packed with more controversy, venom, social commentary and poetic vision that most of the world’s top singer-songwriters have managed in an entire career.

These are epic songs with a scope that is encompassing, intelligent, perceptive and thought provoking. There is nothing easy-listening about anything Roy does. He doesn’t duck issues or court popularity.

If he feels it then he writes it. You need to have your brain engaged to tackle a song like the twenty odd minutes of concentrated polemic that is One of Those Days in England. It is a song about life, history, the future and the world we are building. Not many people would ever dare attempt such a challenging scope. It’s complexity is daunting. Yet it is not opaque because of that. The variation, melody and drive make it accessible and enjoyable.

Roy is an artist in both music and words and the result is extraordinary.

Not many people come close.

One of Those Days in England pt. 2-10

Every Wednesday morning, at about the hour of ten
I give the queen my autograph, she gives me the yen
The man behind the counter smiles, the door man bows again
Just another day down on the dole queue

But the government must love me ’cause they keep me out of work
They must be saving me for something special
Maybe it’s the job of rolling spliffs for Captain Kirk
Or giving Miss Lovelace a pubic hairdo.

One of those days in England with a sword in every pond
And birds in every garden in the land
One of those days in England when the passion never ends
A slowly moving season by the fire of my friends.

And though the time fast slips away, it’s long enough to laugh and play
Around the fireside making hay, dreaming of tomorrow, you know there’s no today.

One of those days in England with the willow hanging on
I dreamt I met an old man down the road
Whispering the mysteries of patterns up ahead
And stirring past reflections with the sword of lightning said,

Alfred had me made from Albion’s everglade
And I made him to lie with me whence all my troubles fade
You may have read the signs, beware of strange designs
For though the victors write the books, the loser speaks the lines
So let’s now both be gone, ’tis far to Avalon
And though we go our different ways, I’ll see you there anon.

And so I got on board the bird of aeons and I rode
But everytime I met a prince, a fork came down the road
I kept on thinking that I’d stop once everybody showed
Gathered in the myths of our reflection.

But stopping ain’t that possible this far into control
This far beyond the non imagination
No more than I can shed the moving forces of my soul
The time lords of the slowly revolution.

You and me, mother, we’re gonna raise a ship full of kids and slowly lose them
Why does it matter where they’ve all gone, we don’t even have the power to choose them
You and me, father, we’re gonna colonise all of the stars with lots of our madness
Shooting through space with sons on our hips and guns on our lips to play snakes and ladders.

Oh heavens above, I’m coming with love all over, over you.

You and me, sister, we’re gonna plant a bomb in a street to change law and order
And when we’ve killed all who resisted the call, we’ll discover a brand new wall at the border
You and me, brother, wrapped up in silence, brooding for better breathing spaces
Seeing ideals, we were one time a part of rip us apart in our holiest places.

Oh heavens above, I’m coming with love all over, all over you.

Sitting out there with this silvery hair and your thundery look when you really don’t care, but I love you
Dolly blue rivers, foreverness givers, I’ll go without knowing and know without going above you
Stood on the ship in a dream at third slip with Britannica’s tallons on Albion’s grip, do you need me ?
Looking for you when it’s catch 22 and you’ve never been here but it’s always been blue up above me, up above me.

Oh Mrs. Space took her man to the human race
And together they humped over the edge
Nine months later, they were sharing a brand new face
The latest thin end of the wedge.

And baby grew, grew into a space cadet
Legend lives, he screamed under his breath
I’m in the queue, in the queue for the hell of it
Some place inbetween life and death.

Oh Mrs. Space, I love you, with your come home early eye
Don’t ever come between us ’cause times don’t change, they fly.

And it don’t seem long since my life was an endless stream
The future fled into time without trace
I see the end now but I’ve fallen in love again
With a girl who can travel in space.

Oh Mrs. Space, you lead me a wild goose chase
Inbetween, inbetween every line
Well hell, girl, I don’t even know your face
‘Cause you see you’ve been sitting on mine.

Oh Mrs. Space, I love you, with your come home early eye
Don’t ever come between us ’cause times don’t change they fly.

Slowly slipping into history feel us go
With these times another age could never know
See the photos black and white and quaintly dressed
Stood in queues of people smiling, sorely pressed.

Your silent room is the collection of your ways
Every shelf is built of all those different days
And those much younger cannot understand by half
The wireless living room, the faces ’round the hearth.

The ration books of Matthews out there on the wing
The corner shop that sold us almost everything
The farthing in the change, the sirens and the planes
Puffing billies, shunting eras down the lane, down the lane.

You know we’ll soon be gone from here, year upon light year
We’ll take the stories with us there, the memories are dear.

One of those days in England, mum was rustling up the grub
And dad was off out propping up the pub
One of those days in England that you just could not forget
From the mists of secret morning to the golden red sunset.

And though the time fast slips away, it’s long enough to laugh and play
Around the fireside making hay, dreaming of tomorrow, oh you know there’s no today.

Oh you know there’s no today
No, you know, today.

Education under the Tories – Tickbox heaven – Statistic nightmare!

Under the Tories it is teaching by numbers.

All that matters is the results, the league tables and the statistics.

Every lesson is slotted into the same mould.

Every teacher is battered into the routine of an automaton.

Heaven help you if you have a personality or flair.

One size fits all.

The children are drilled to become regurgitating zombies.

We must climb the league tables, remember the facts, pass the exams.

Every school has a big bonfire on which they pile the useless things to be burnt. Things like Fun, creativity, care, individuality, music, art, and culture.

This is the Tory concept of pass and fail. The bright ones are worthy; the rest are worthless.

Children are dumped on the rubbish heap.

This is the age of education on the cheap. We do not need qualified teachers. They are too expensive. The plebs can manage with anyone standing in front of a class.

This is education for free. Set up a ‘Free’ School – let the Creationists, Religious Right and Big Business pay to indoctrinate your kids. It won’t cost the State a penny.

We’ll get the big Academy groups in to cream off a profit off your kid.

And if your kid should complain that the stress is too much, the lessons are too boring, the curriculum is too narrow; we’ll get some soldiers in to keep discipline!

And if the teachers complain we’ll put them through a disciplinary and threaten them with capability.

And if the Management complain we’ll bring in Ofsted and have them kicked out.

This is the age of bullying, winners and losers.

Unless you are in the Public School system and can pay to send your child to a Private School – you can have teachers with flair, schools without bureaucracy, no ofsted breathing down your neck and lots of personal attention, interesting lessons, creativity and culture. Because you deserve it!

Another scurrilous Cameron video – hilarious

Heart-warming story – animals are as important as people!

happy world

It’s nice to get some news about people who care. We need a lot more of them.

Human beings can be altruistic, caring and selfless.

The Nightmare that Education is becoming! the PISA tables – what a farce!

ed tests

Now that the Tories have latched on to the PISA tests as a level of achievement we are doomed.

The PISA tests are severely limited. They test a narrow spectrum of ability. In China, Japan and Korea they cram kids for the tests. The suicide rates soar. Childhood is destroyed.

In Britain our education has been so much better. It is more rounded, creative and child centred. We teach for creativity, lateral thinking and social responsibility. We teach skills, raise self-esteem and encourage qualities.

Knowledge is a small part of good education and certainly not the be-all and end-all.

Education should be FUN.

Now we have moved to statistics, check-lists, targets, league tables, exam tables and Maths and English being all that matters. Art and Music have been relegated to optional extras of little value.

We are churning out robots in pursuit of a silly PISA table place.

I say to hell with PISA – let’s teach children not statistics.

Ofsted can go stuff itself!!  The Tory nightmare of education is making our schools into factories and our kids into automatons!

Phil Ochs – Links on the Chain – Lyrics about the Trade Union movement.

Phil Ochsttt phil ochs 3

Without the Trade Unions organising the bosses abused the working man. Working people were kept in slum housing on poverty wages while the rich creamed off all the wealth and lived in huge mansions with servants.

The Trade Unions fought for a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.

After the Unions came into existence the lot of the ordinary person was greatly improved.

It was a step in the right direction; a step towards equality.

The Trade Unions became too powerful and too silly. The restricted practices to protect their members went too far. Power corrupts.

What we need is a strong &Union Movement and responsibility. At this moment in time the inequality is too great.

Phil Ochs wrote about the rise of the Trade Union movement and how it represented the working people and brought fairness and prosperity. He wrote of how it betrayed the black people by failing to join with the civil rights movement.

We are now in a global battle for fairness and an end to poverty for everyone on the planet. It is only the establishment who want the inequality for cheap labour to boost their profits.

This is the time for a global Trade Union movement – Fairness and Justice for All!!!!

Links on the Chain

Come you ranks of labor, come you union core
And see if you remember the struggles of before
When you were standing helpless on the outside of the door
And you started building links on the chain, on the chain
And you started building links on the chain

When the police on the horses were waitin’ on demand
Ridin’ through the strike with the pistols in their hands
Swingin’ at the skulls of many a union man
As you built one more link on the chain, on the chain
As you built one more link on the chain

Then the army of the fascists tried to put you on the run
But the army of the union, they did what could be done
Oh, the power of the factory was greater than the gun
As you built one more link on the chain, on the chain
As you built one more link on the chain

And then in 1954, decisions finally made
Oh, the black man was a-risin’ fast, racin’ from the shade
And your union took no stand and your union was betrayed
As you lost yourself a link on the chain, on the chain
As you lost yourself a link on the chain

And then there came the boycotts and then the freedom rides
And forgetting what you stood for, you tried to block the tide
Oh, the automation bosses were laughin’ on the side
As they watched you lose your link on the chain, on the chain
As they watched you lose your link on the chain

You know when they block your trucks boys by layin’ on the road
All that they are doin’ is all that you have showed
That you gotta strike, you gotta fight to get what you are owed
When you’re building all your links on the chain, on the chain
When you’re building all your links on the chain

And the man who tries to tell you that they’ll take your job away
He’s the same man who was scabbin’ hard just the other day
And your union’s not a union till he’s thrown out of the way
And he’s chokin’ on your links of the chain, of the chain
And he’s chokin’ on your links of the chain

For now the times are tellin’ you the times are rollin’ on
And you’re fighting for the same thing, the jobs that will be gone
Now it’s only fair to ask your boys, which side are you on?
As you’re buildin’ all your links on the chain, on the chain
As you’re buildin’ all your links on the chain

The Political Debate – The Women won it!!

politics-cartoon-vague_g290

Farage was an arse!

Milliband was better than Cameron!!

No wonder Cameron doesn’t want to square up to Milliband – he looks really rattled. How can you defend the policy to annihilate public services??  More of the same but worse!! More Cuts!!! Debt not paid!!!   It is ludicrous!!  All he relies on is accusing Labour of causing a world recession!! Insane.

Clegg is a side-issue! Nobody believes a word. He allowed the Nasty Party to shit on us!

Milliband is getting better by the minute. But Nicola Sturgeon and the three other ladies won the debate hands down.

What they all need to take on board is that austerity does not work. It has caused huge damage and hasn’t paid off the debt!

I’m quite looking forward to a coalition that gets rid of austerity – the SNP/Labour might be just the ticket!!

Austerity doesn’t work – no debt paid off – huge inequality!!

austerity-isnt-working-steve-bell Osborne-stone-Routledge-cartoon

Austerity and the unfairness of how it works.

The rich get richer and the poor get squashed. Public services get smashed and the rich use their private services to gain even more advantage.

Austerity favours the establishment.

Too many people on the poverty line requiring food banks, on zero hours contracts and being used as cheap labour by the rich.

When people get paid so little the taxes go down and the national debt gets even bigger.

The unfairness of tax cuts for the rich while the poor suffer pay cuts.

Too many bankers bonuses, rich-cats pay rises while the Public Sector is annihilated due to pure Tory dogma.

What sort of divided society are we creating? It stinks!!

When people are abused so much, when inequality reaches a peak, they spontaneously rise up and smash the system. We nearly saw it with the riots of a few years back. We’re storing trouble for the future.

The Tories and the bankers run a pretty shady business of looking after their rich buddies and toffs. Austerity was a great excuse.

AUSTERITY DOES NOT WORK!!!

Tracy Chapman – Talkin’ Bout a Revolution – Lyrics about the underclass rising up and forcefully taking what is rightfully theirs.

Tracy_Chapman

This song could have been written about austerity and the unfairness of how it works. The rich get richer and the poor get squashed. Public services get smashed and the rich use their private services to gain even more advantage.

Austerity favours the establishment.

When people are abused so much, when inequality reaches a peak, they spontaneously rise up and smash the system. We nearly saw it with the riots of a few years back.

The Tories and the bankers run a pretty shady business of looking after their rich buddies and toffs. Austerity was a great excuse.

However, this song was about the racial divide in America which has created an underclass of black Americans.

They are beginning to assert themselves but they have a long way to go.

We are all one species. Nobody should have any greater right than anybody else!

A revolution will happen one way or another. I hope for slow gradual change towards greater fairness. Violence is always a loser for everyone!

If austerity and the racial divide continues , if the global poverty levels are allowed to go on, there will be a reckoning

We need to listen to the whispers.

“Talkin’ Bout A Revolution”

Don’t you know
They’re talkin’ bout a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
Don’t you know
They’re talkin’ about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper

While they’re standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in the unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion

Poor people gonna rise up
And get their share
Poor people gonna rise up
And take what’s theirs

Don’t you know
You better run, run, run…
Oh I said you better Run, run, run…
Finally the tables are starting to turn
Talkin’ bout a revolution

Modern technology and education – the hope for the future!

happy world

Ignorance, superstition, indoctrination, fear and isolation are the tools that tyrants use to control people.

Religion and politics are the excuses.

Psychology shows us that sociopaths and psychopaths are very good at making their way to the top of institutions. They like power and they have no compunctions about how they deal with people. They actually enjoy upsetting others and abusing them.

The past has been locked into a cycle where religions and political systems rise up and try to gain supremacy over others. When you throw ethnicity and social factors into the mix it becomes a rotten stew of genocide, war and subjugation.

We are in a new age. There is optimism about the future!

Now we have the means of educating people we can reveal the flaws in religion and political systems. We can counter indoctrination.

Now we have media in the hands of the people nothing can be hidden away. Every atrocity can be revealed so people understand what is going on and can judge it for themselves. They do not have to rely on what they are being told by the ‘establishment’.

Now we have a global perspective.

Now we have science.

Science tells us that all human beings are one species. There is no basis for racism

Science has blown away the myths of superstition. The earth is not flat. There is no heaven above the clouds, no hell below. Religion may wriggle but it is doomed to die away in the blast of science as psychologists explain its human beginnings. We do not need it any more. We can make better morality through rational thought and law. We do not need a deity to enforce it.

I am optimistic about the future. If we can survive the next few decades without destroying each other, over-running the place with too many people, killing all the wild-life, ravaging the environment and creating catastrophic climate change then we can really set about creating a great future. We can create a global society with good moral values, laws and freedoms, equality and wealth for all. We can conserve our wildernesses and live happily ever after.

Education and technology can kick our religious and political tyrants into touch. We can have an age without senseless war and cruelty.

Wouldn’t that be nice!happy world
