Anthropocene Apocalypse – Soil erosion – Woody Guthrie – Dust Storm Disaster lyrics – the true story of human created disaster.

Chest x-ray Dust bowl6 Dust_Bowl_-_Dallas,_South_Dakota_1936 dust_bowl_1 dust-bowl3 dust-bowl-cause-1

The whole region of Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, once a fertile land was transformed into a great dust bowl in the 1930s due to over-farming, grubbing out of hedges, removal of trees and over-grazing. The quality of the soil cohesion was reduced and it was subject to erosion. When it was dry and the wind got up it blew the soil away creating huge dust storms that buried whole regions. It destroyed communities, made farming impossible and created illness and mass migration.

It is a salutary lesson for the way we manage the world. We cannot simply go on and on mistreating the land, polluting and increasing our population. There is a tipping point.

And if you think it was bad for humans just consider the impact on the flora and fauna!

Woody Guthrie documented this disaster in one of his many brilliant songs about the devastating effect of this man-made disaster.

Dust Storm Disaster
(aka. The Great Dust Storm)
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie

On the 14th day of April of 1935,
There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky.
You could see that dust storm comin’, the cloud looked deathlike black,
And through our mighty nation, it left a dreadful track.

From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line,
Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande,
It fell across our city like a curtain of black rolled down,
We thought it was our judgement, we thought it was our doom.

The radio reported, we listened with alarm,
The wild and windy actions of this great mysterious storm;
From Albuquerque and Clovis, and all New Mexico,
They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw.

From old Dodge City, Kansas, the dust had rung their knell,
And a few more comrades sleeping on top of old Boot Hill.
From Denver, Colorado, they said it blew so strong,
They thought that they could hold out, but they didn’t know how long.

Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks,
And the children they was cryin’ as it whistled through the cracks.
And the family it was crowded into their little room,
They thought the world had ended, and they thought it was their doom.

The storm took place at sundown, it lasted through the night,
When we looked out next morning, we saw a terrible sight.
We saw outside our window where wheat fields they had grown
Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown.

It covered up our fences, it covered up our barns,
It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm.
We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in,
We rattled down that highway to never come back again.

Anthropocene Apocalypse – 3.6 billion years of evolution all interlinked.

deforestdolphins2IMG_5916idyllic-stroll-through-the-norwegian-fjords-by-kayak-1-638

It has taken a staggering 3.6 Billion years for life to have evolved from one single cell in the glutinous soup of oceans that came out of a Billion years of heat, lightning, UV and gamma to create fourteen million species.

We cannot imagine those magnitudes of time. That is why so many people have difficulty understanding evolution.

All life on this planet has evolved to interact and support each other in one huge global web. The variety and splendour is breathtakingly awesome and we should celebrate it with all our hearts.

The green plants process our carbon to produce our food and oxygen.

The animals have feelings and senses analogous to our own.

We all have our habitats and niches and are interlinked.

Together we have changed the world dramatically. We have altered the climate, the atmosphere and weather. The world is how it is because of what life has done to it. There would be no oxygen without plants, no ozone to shield us from radiation, no fire to keep us warm.

Without an array of insects there would be no birds or insectivores.

Without the animals the flowers would lack pollination and fruit would not be dispersed.

We should value, respect and love it with all our hearts. This fragile web is what sustains us. Without all those plants and animals interacting we would not survive. They are our past, present and future.

Build a positive zeitgeist. Protect them all. Preserve our future.

Hello! Pleased to meet you! I’m God.

god_thirty_two_feet_per_second_737055 god_believe_in_yourself_525255 baloo

You may be wondering why I made you all so badly. I’m sorry about the neck. It breaks so easily. I should have put the brain somewhere safe. I wasn’t thinking.

Sorry about the wind-pipe and oesophagus too – should open in different places huh! I’ll know better next time!

But hey – putting the sex organs in with the excretory stuff – that was deliberate! My idea of a joke!  Pretty funny huh?

Now I know some of you are wondering how I made the earth in seven days when there aren’t any days in space. We didn’t get days until I’d made it and got it spinning but hey – I’m allowed a little poetic licence – right.

So why do I only appear to illiterate nomads in deserts thousands of years ago in wildernesses, caves and mountain tops, I hear you ask? Why don’t I just go on prime-time TV and appear at the Superbowl? Why don’t I appear where there’s a few witnesses? Why don’t I pop down today? I’ll tell you why – it’s because I like messing with your heads.

Anthropocene Apocalypse – HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIFE – 3.6 billion years old!

happy-birthday-earthoverpopulation-1-728Overpopulation

Yes – Happy Birthday planet Earth – by my reckoning a mere youngster of 4.55 Billion years!!   Happy birthday to you and many happy turns.

Yes – Happy Birthday life – 3.6 Billion years old today!!  My how you have grown! From a single little pretty cell to 14 million species (and falling by the minute)! What a big handsome hunk you’ve become! You’re looking good! (Except you’re not looking nearly as good as you were a mere hundred years ago!)

Who would have believed the way you have grown up. When you were just a slime you looked a mess! – Now look at you!  From majestic Redwood to wondrous Whale!

Happy Birthday hominids!!  20 million today! – You’ll soon be out of nappies!! Who’d have believed that just because you had a thumb, binocular vision and a slightly bigger cortex than most you’d get so above yourself?

Happy Birthday Homo!! – How the hell did you make 2.5 million when you’re such a destructive bunch of thoughtless monkeys? You’re only a few days old in evolutionary terms. Still throwing your toys out of the cot and pulling everything thing in sight to bits. Let’s hope you grow up soon before you’ve completely wrecked the joint!

Right now you’re in your selfish, greedy, self-centred, destructive baby phase. You think you know what you’re doing but you’re not looking at the big picture, are you? I think there’s a lot of schooling and education to go before you fully understand cause and effect!

If you chop down all the trees, you will have lots of money but no oxygen!

I hope you mature soon and develop a conscience.

I hope you start acting intelligent. Too much cortex, too much greed, not enough compassion or forward planning.

Too many of us!!!  Time we cut back!! Or there won’t be too many more birthdays!

Christy Moore – El Salvador – Lyrics about war, death and global intrigue.

Christy El Salvadoran%20civil%20war El SalvadorLarryTowell-11-800x529

So many parts of the world are being destabilised deliberately for power, politics or profit and usually all three. There’s always a brutal fanatic, warlord or other criminal who will spring into the gap and always a lot of young, gullible, naïve fools who will rush to follow – full of idealism, adrenalin, propaganda and passion – willing to kill, torture and maim for the cause.

El Salvador was just one. What is American foreign policy?

El Salvador

A girl cries in the early morning
Woken by the sound of a gun
She knows somewhere somebody’s dying
Beneath the rising sun
Outside the window of her cabaсa
The shadows are full of her fears
She knows her lover is out there somewhere
He’s been on the run for a year

Oh, the soul of El Salvador

Bells ring out in the chapel steeple
A priest prepares to say mass
The sad congregation come tired and hungry
To pray that trouble will pass
Meanwhile the sun rises over the dusty streets
Where his crowd gathers round.
Flies and mosquitoes are drinking from pools of blood
Where the boby is found

Oh, the soul of El Salvador

Out on the ranch the rich man’s preparing
To go for his morning ride
They’ve saddled his horse out in the corral
He walks out full of pride
He looks like a cowboy from one of those pictures
A president made in the past
Peasants in rags, the stand back for they know
That El Rico travels fast

Over the soul of El Salvador

A girl cries in the early morning
Woken by the sound of a gun
She knows somewhere somebody’s dying
Beneath the rising sun
Outside the window of her cabaсa

The shadows are full of her fears

She knows her lover is out there somewhere
He’s been on the run for a year

Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Oh, the soul of El Salvador
Oh, the soul of El Salvador

Traffic – You Can All Join In – Lyrics of optimism about social situations.

traffic-Keystone-Hulton-Arc Traffic

This was written back in those optimistic days of the sixties when we thought we were bringing something new to the table. The old greed and selfishness of the establishment would be swept away along with all its resultant violence, inequality and war.

We had all the answers to sexism, racism and the hypocrisy that society ran by.

Little did we know that the establishment would bite back with a vengeance. Our heroes would be bought off and become part of the travesty, the politicians would get their snouts in the trough, people would starve, fanatics would prosper and wars would rage.

If only everybody had joined in with the new philosophy of peace, love and equality. What a different world we would have.

“You Can All Join In”

Here’s a little song, you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own words up if you want to
Any old words that you think will do, yeah
Yellow, blue, what’ll I do?
Maybe I’ll just sit here thinking
Black, white, stop the fight
Does one of these colours ever bother you? Here’s a little dance you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own steps up if you want to
Any old steps that you think will do
Left, right, don’t get uptight
Keep in line and you’ll be alright
Clap hands, move around
Make sure no one puts you down

Here’s a little world you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own life up if you want to
Any old life that you think will do
Love, yeah, it’s nothing new
There’s someone much worse off than you are
Help me set them free
Just be what you want to be

Here’s a little song you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own words up if you want to
Any old words that you think will do

Poem – Still angry from 1996

I’ve been digging out some of my old poetry. I’m enjoying them

I think someone must have annoyed me but I can’t remember who. Maybe I was always just angry?

10152663_847565965260097_7162698094241037090_n[1]

ANGRY

My mind is crippled

My emotions crawl

My memory limps

My psychology stalls

Shouting over the tramping of those worker ants

Standing in the shadow of these anorexic dwarves

My arguments decay into worthless rants

My best ideas become fodder for the wolves

There must be more than this

There has to be a way

That gives a sense of purpose

With something real to say

Somewhere between the mindless and the mean

Between the leaders and followers

What is and might have been

Between the sickeningly sweet and the vicious kick

Between the awesome mystery

Religion and the sick.

Somewhere between the ageing and the end

Between the discovery and death

The laws to break and mend

Between the exploiting cynic and the devotee

Between the moments that matter

And the lives of you and me.

There must be more than this

There has to be a way

That gives a sense of purpose

With something real to say

Another poem from long ago – This has got worse too!

Sexton Beetle (Necroporus humator) lying on its back, shamming dead.

Even the bugs aren’t doing well anymore!!!

No bugs = no birds.

ALL FUCKED

Gorillas, whales and baby seals

Rhinos, Elephants and quail

Defiant in the undergrowth

We have blasted them to hell

Forests, land and water

Air, us and sea swell

A job that’s well worth doing

For the pleasure or the sell

Caged, tortured, maimed

Hunted, poked, impaled

Badgered to extinction

But the bugs are doing well

Why take the time to do it slow

Why not get it over quick?

Put life out of its misery

Kill the planet

Don’t leave it sick!

Palm oil, wood pulp & coffee – the ravage of the great forests.

Our wild-life is being destroyed to service our shampoo and a nice cup of coffee.

deforestation-ecde0406

Anywhere a government or company can make a quick buck they are selling off the future. The habitat of our wild-life is being destroyed. It is evaporating off the face of the planet like dew off a roof.

deforestation_2074483b

The beautiful forests of Tasmania and Australia being chopped and sold to China for wood pulp. The Chinese wipe their bottoms on the death of billions of animals. They probably read about the destruction of the world on part of that destruction.

The huge jungles of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are being cleared for coffee plantation.

The jungles of Borneo and Sumatra for palm oil plantations. It is used for confectionary and shampoo.

The African and Brazilian jungles are being logged.

Everywhere the jungle is opened up and logging roads put in the hunters move in and decimate the animals.

Doesn’t anybody care?

Anthropocene Apocalypse – The Gibbon – close to extinction

GibbonWhtChkedRogerSmith gibbon

It’s the same old story. All over the world human populations are soaring, habitat is destroyed, animals are butchered for meat, parts of the animals are used for Chinese medicine. As well as that the beautiful gibbons are wanted as pets. They are ‘harvested’ as babies. The mothers are shot from the tops of trees and surviving babies sold.

In china 99% of the gibbons habitat has been destroyed. In Vietnam the jungle is being cleared for coffee plantations. In Borneo it is logging.

The gibbons are relatives of ours. Not as close as gorillas and Chimps but close enough.

When are we going to stop this cruel destruction?

Help build a new zeitgeist.
