Thinking about Dave Mason and Traffic

Kind of feels like a whole era is slowly shuffling off into forever taking with it the ideals and aspirations of yesteryear.

I’ve been very nostalgic today thinking of those times having just written a book about my experiences during that incredibly positive decade. Makes me sad to see how the world’s turned out with all that naked greed, selfish billionaires, Trump, Farage and the gullible who are supporting these greedy populists. Trump and Farage are milking it for every last million. Trump’s made $5 billion so far and Farage is pulling in millions. Yet people still believe these greedy bastards.

We live in a world of perpetual war, exploitation, environmental destruction, racism, corruption and Elitism. A handful of people own half the planet while people starve. They orchestrate wars and division for profit.

Back in the 60s we were anti-establishment, anti-war and anti-greed. We wanted rid of the greedy elite who were masterminding this mass destruction for their own gain.

Guess what? The same greedy bastards have a strangle-hold on the planet. The sixties was a dream.

Takes me back to all those happy days grooving along to Traffic at festivals – always a great vibe. Feelin’ Alright live was immaculate. Very different, experimental and grooved.

Adios Dave Mason

There was a lot to do before you died!

I have a fond memory of being in a field somewhere in England at some festival with traffic playing this. I was swaying with my arms around Liz and it transported us to a wonderland

Thanks Dave. We were feeling alright.

Traffic – You Can All Join In – Lyrics of optimism about social situations.

traffic-Keystone-Hulton-Arc Traffic

This was written back in those optimistic days of the sixties when we thought we were bringing something new to the table. The old greed and selfishness of the establishment would be swept away along with all its resultant violence, inequality and war.

We had all the answers to sexism, racism and the hypocrisy that society ran by.

Little did we know that the establishment would bite back with a vengeance. Our heroes would be bought off and become part of the travesty, the politicians would get their snouts in the trough, people would starve, fanatics would prosper and wars would rage.

If only everybody had joined in with the new philosophy of peace, love and equality. What a different world we would have.

“You Can All Join In”

Here’s a little song, you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own words up if you want to
Any old words that you think will do, yeah
Yellow, blue, what’ll I do?
Maybe I’ll just sit here thinking
Black, white, stop the fight
Does one of these colours ever bother you? Here’s a little dance you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own steps up if you want to
Any old steps that you think will do
Left, right, don’t get uptight
Keep in line and you’ll be alright
Clap hands, move around
Make sure no one puts you down

Here’s a little world you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own life up if you want to
Any old life that you think will do
Love, yeah, it’s nothing new
There’s someone much worse off than you are
Help me set them free
Just be what you want to be

Here’s a little song you can all join in with
It’s very simple and I hope it’s new
Make your own words up if you want to
Any old words that you think will do

Traffic

Stevie Winwood was still a young kid when he quit the Spencer Davies group to form his own band. He had been heralded as having the best Blues voice in Britain and had powered through a number of great singles and a few albums with Spencer and Co. By the end part of the sixties with the advent of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Pink Floyd and a host of others, the British Underground was getting into full swing, Youth culture was taking off and Spencer Davies did not seem quite so cool. Stevie wanted a band with better Underground Freak credentials; he wanted in on the action.

He gathered together a bunch of top musicians and headed off to an isolated farm-house to rehearse as was the wont. Those musicians were the cream of the bunch with Jim Capaldi on drums, Chris Wood on flute and saxophone, and Dave Mason on guitar. Steve was looking for something Psychedelic and different and achieved it. With some great songs from Mason the band took off!

There seemed to be some weird schizophrenia going on. The singles seemed commercial and the albums aimed at the Underground. They didn’t seem quite sure what scene they wanted to be in. Doing both was not an option. The charts were looked down on by the Underground Freaks. Being a bread-head and opting in to the establishment was definitely not the way to go for Freaks. While ‘Hole in my shoe’ and ‘Here we go round the Mulbery Bush’ were most definitely psychedelic they were a bit too Poppy for Underground tastes. Perhaps that was why Dave Mason left? Fortunately the albums were of sufficient quality that Traffic were able to retain their alternative culture credentials. They got away with it.

There was no denying that tracks like ‘Dear Mr Fantasy’ and ‘Feelin’ Alright’ were not Pop trivia. Traffic were a serious band and fully accepted on the Underground circuit. Live they would extend tracks like these into twenty minute epics that got into a groove and were hypnotic. The band were so tight that the music was divine. There were Jazz influences, Indian and Rock. The lyrics were good, arrangements superb and no other band sounded quite like them. Stevie had developed his voice into an incredible range and depth. They were even better live than they were on record. It was magic.

After two brilliant albums and a final album ‘Last Exit’ the band was disbanded by Stevie. He went on to form Blind Faith, reformed Traffic a couple of times and pursued a solo career. Nothing ever came close to those first two Traffic albums though.
