Today’s Music to keep me SANE in Isolation – Early Pink Floyd

Today I’ve been playing early Pink Floyd – psychedelic warriors from the London sixties underground.

Back in the day I would go to places like Middle Earth, UFO and the Roundhouse. Pink Floyd were the exciting house band with their light show and extended, mesmerising sounds. Nobody had heard anything like it. We used to dance!!

I was lucky enough to see them with Syd and then when Dave took over. They were exciting. Free concerts in Hyde Park, Parliament Fields and gigs at Fishmongers Arms and Eel Pie Island. Great times and great memories.

Back in those days they either played for free or for a ridiculous amount like 12p. I remember seeing them and Blossom Toes on Eel Pie Island for a staggering 18p.

I was slow to adapt. When they later became a stadium band I stopped going. Having seen them in small clubs for next to nothing I could not see why anyone would pay a fortune (pounds) to go and see tiny specks in the distance and a cruddy sound system. I missed out. I hadn’t appreciated the change in technology and different nature of the spectacle. We live and learn.

Anyway, today I play those early albums loud and true!

Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

I’ve always loved Pink Floyd right back from their days as an underground psychedelic band at UFO. They were the band that epitomised those heady days of the 60s to me – a time full of idealism and experimentation. I used to see them in pubs and free concerts. My life seemed to revolve around UFO, Middle Earth, the Toby Jug, Eel Pie Island, Klooks Kleek and Les Cousins. That’s where we all met up.

This track harks back to the glory days of 1967-70 when we really thought we had the establishment on the run and were creating a new world without the greed and selfishness. Such naïve boldness. Such camaraderie and high hopes.

This track fills me with nostalgia and reminds me of the good friends that are no longer with us. We shared some good times and many laughs. Tony and Danny I wish you were here.

“Wish You Were Here”

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Radio Show – Sixties Psychedelia – The MP3 of the show

Well – fame at last!!! Our Psychedelic Radio show has just been taken up and broadcast three times!!!
Hollywood beckons!!!
Unfortunately you probably have to be in intensive care to hear it!! Our show went out in Hull and East Riding hospitals.
I thought I’d put it out again for all of you who are not in intensive care in Hull and Yorkshire!
We had great fun putting it together.

Poetry – Keep on Rockin’ – A piece of doggerel for the Sixties rock scene.

In search of Captain Beefheart cover

Keep on Rockin’

For me there were a number of eras of rock excellence. The thirties acoustic blues, the fifties rock n roll or Chicago blues, the early sixties Greenwich Village folk, British beat and r&b, then the late sixties underground and the seventies punk. But if I have to pick an era it has to be the late sixties. That was when music exploded and anything was possible. It was when the world was flooded with a wave of optimism and possibility, an age of experimentation and fusion. That was an age that suited my personality. It was a revolution that threw out old values and sought to create some better ones.  It certainly allowed me to explore, think and expand my mind.

Back then I was out three nights a week rockin’ to Jimi, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Harper Traffic, Tomorrow, Free, Edgar Broughton, Nice, Chicken Shack, Tomorrow and Floyd. Dylan was never far from my turn table and I got to see all those brilliant West Coast bands – Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, Grateful Dead, Doors, Love, Country Joe and the Fish, Buffalo Springfield, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Byrds and Mothers of Invention. I’d been knocked out by Phil Ochs, Paul Butterfield, the Who, Small Faces, Pretty Things and Janis with Big Brother. Then there was Cohen, Bert and John, Donovan, Jackson C Frank and John Mayall. The Fugs and Velvets brought an East Coast realism. Joni, CSN&Y brought harmony and Neil brought energy.

So much was going on. You did not have time to catch your breath.

It went on and on. I thought it would never end.

We were having a Bonzo. John Peel was our Guru.

Anyway – I wrote a bit of doggerel that you might like to pick over and tease out some of the names. There are a few more obscure.

I was playing. But it is also a bit of a homage.

Keep on Rockin’

Country Joe was grateful as the airplane flew

From Buffalo with invention when that feeling grew.

Love flew like the byrds while velvets walked the streets

It was canned tomorrow for a bunch of cosmic freaks.

Doors flew open as magic filled the land.

We’d been devoid of Floyd but now we understand.

The cream of the traffic was a family of mac.

As Dylan had foretold there was no looking back.

We were all sunshine supermen across the universe,

Floating on a cosmic stream that skipped from verse to verse,

And I’ve been harping on with big brother in a fug

Where every stone is lifted a beetle runs amok.

Well I’ve been zapped with quicksilver, convention and who?

And experienced  with Jimi, the look on a small face with you.

But a field can make it happen as we all make for free,

As we peeled back with more reason, so that we all could see.

I, like a cross bee, shall stay young with Joni

And plant the ochs of a different tree, based on Guthrie, and sanity.

For music’s been my inspiration as my consciousness flows

Along that golden stirring, as that syncopation grows.

Radio Show Psychedelic Sixties – Just got back from the recording studio!

537 Essential Rock Albums cover

I’ve just returned from recording our second radio show. Mike is a great friend of mine. He used to be the Roadie with Free, Bad Company and Robin Trower. We’ve been messing about doing some Radio shows on Rock Music. We’ve got seventy roughly planned out. Our first show was Merseybeat and this second one is Sixties Psychedelia.

We’ve been doing these as 1 hour Radio Shows. So far nobody wants to put them out but we’re enjoying making them.

What do you think we should do next?

Rock ‘n’ Roll?

Electric Blues of the 1950s?

West Coast Acid Rock?

Punk?

I’ll get this converted to an MP3 and put it out on the blog as soon as I can. I’m going to listen to it now!

Pink Floyd – Shine on you Crazy Diamond – a song for Syd Barrett.

syd_barrett_in_the_acid_sea-detail

Syd was the driving force behind Psychedelia. His fantastic lyrics and musical concepts created a new genre. There was nothing like it. Many people tried to copy but they lacked Syd’s imagination and touch. He was an incredibly imaginative person.

Syd is the highest profile Acid casualty. I don’t know if it was the acid or an inherent mental illness. Perhaps the acid precipitated what was already lurking? Perhaps the genius was tied up with the mental illness? Who knows.

All I know is that when I met Syd he was gone. His eyes were those black holes. His speech was slow and labouring. Too much acid had certainly done him no good. Or was it too much dope?

I’ve seen the same thing with two of my friends. One committed suicide at the age of twenty one and the other has recurrent problems following a bad acid experience at Glastonbury.

This song was written as a tribute to Syd’s genius. Pink Floyd are a formidable band; one of the best. They were different without Syd but still brilliant. Syd gave them the kick-start and impetus. He’s gone but not forgotten. He never did shine again. What a great shame.

Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond lyrics

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.

Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there’s a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the cross fire of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger,
You legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Treatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
You piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and I’ll be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we’ll bask in the shadow of yesterday’s triumph,
And sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
Come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

Pink Floyd – Money – lyrics

Pink_Floyd_1967

The inequality is the root of most of the problems in the world. There are trillionaires buying Lear jets, mansions and yachts while one third of the world starve. The jobless starving are desperate to migrate to somewhere where they can get a job and make a life. The desperate turn to superstition and fundamental religion. The hatred breeds racism, misogyny and war.

It is crazy.

Yet most people get on the merry-go-round in search of happiness through wealth. They would cut their grandma’s throat to get their hands on a stash.

There is a better way. Money does not buy happiness – fulfilment does and that comes from achieving something that was hard. You don’t get fulfilment by winning the lottery; you get by climbing a mountain or writing a book. It comes from your family and love.

Money – who gives a shit? Someone needs to sort it out a lot more fairly!!

“Money”

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you’re O.K.
Money, it’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stashThe inequality
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I’ll buy me a football team

Money, get back
I’m all right, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack.
Money, it’s a hit
Don’t give me that do goody good bullshit
I’m in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet

Money, it’s a crime
Share it fairly but don’t take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it’s no surprise that they’re giving none away

Pink Floyd – Time – Lyrics about life and how quickly it passes

pink_floyd_band_members-1862

When you are young it can be bewildering. The world is full of confusing possibilities. What are you going to do with your life? Your head is full of impossible dreams.

I’ve talked to many young people about what they want to do with their life. Very few have a good idea. They drift through thinking that it will all work out somehow.

I can’t believe the number that have told me that their strategy is to win the lottery. They have a far better chance of being hit by a fast car.

Then one day you look around and all those possibilities have narrowed down. You can no longer do all those things. You left it too late.

A human life is really very short. When we are young the days are interminable. We spend a quarter of our lives growing up to be an adult and another quarter in old age. The older you get the faster time flies. Years flash by.

Time is the enemy.

Time

Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour)
The Dark Side of The Moon

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I’d something more to say.

Rock Genres – Psychedelia.

opher-pete-e1400765919348 pink_floyd_band_members-1862 beatles ccc

Psychedelia was the name given to the British music produced in the mid to late sixties influenced by the psychotropic substances such as LSD – Lysergic Acid Diethylamide.

The similar type of music produced on the West Coast of America was called Acid Rock. The two styles fed off each other and were an important element of the sixties counter-culture that is stereotyped as ‘Hippie’.

LSD was legal in the mid-sixties (It was only made illegal in Britain in 1966, in 1966 in California but not until 1968 federally). The interaction of the Rock industry and Youth Culture between the UK and US meant that the two scenes were well integrated.

The drugs of choice of the Rock Bands included marijuana and LSD. At the time these drugs were widely regarded in the Youth Culture of the day as being mind expanding. The generation gap reflected this. The ‘old’ generation with their alcohol and tobacco were seen as unhip while the ‘young’ generation with their dope and Acid were seen as cool.

The Rock musicians in the mid-sixties were indulging in a lot of hallucinogens. The results can be heard in the music of the day. In 1966 a definite Psychedelic tinge was discernible. On the Revolver album the Beatles were producing numbers like ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’. This was a sign of what was to come. Other established bands, such as the Yardbirds (with the immaculate Jeff Beck on guitar), were producing numbers like ‘Over Under Sideways Down’, The Pretty Things were producing the Rock Opera ‘SF Sorrow’ with tracks like £SD. Eric Burdon split the Animals up to create the New Animals. The Who were releasing tracks like ‘I Can See For Miles’ and the Move ‘I Can Hear the Grass Grow’.

The earliest Psychedelic sound was actually an album by Alan Watts called ‘This is It’ and early converts were Donovan with ‘Sunshine Superman’ and Roy Harper released the psychedelic ‘China Girl’ on his first album.

1967 was the year when Psychedelia went interstellar. Pink Floyd led the way with their ground-breaking ‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn’. Syd Barrett was the mastermind of the spacey Sci-fi ‘Interstellar Overdrive’ and the fantasy imagery that was to become part and parcel of Psychedelia. Hendrix was blasting us with ‘Axis Bolder than Love’ with numbers like ‘Spanish Castle Magic’. The Beatles came out with ‘Sgt Peppers’ and the Stones did ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’. There were a plethora of other bands including Arthur Brown, Family, Traffic, Tomorrow, Spooky Tooth, Edgar Broughton, Soft Machine, Procol Harum, Incredible String Band, Moody Blues and Action. Blues Bands like Cream got in on the scene with their Disreali Gears album and Pete Green’s Fleetwood Mac released ‘Green Manalishi’.

The clubs were full of light shows and happenings.

The charts were full of psuedo-psychedelic Pop such as the Lemon Pipers, Status Quo, the Flower-pot Men and Scott McKenzie.

Out in the streets it was different. There was a social revolution. The British and American counterculture were burgeoning and Acid Rock with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Country Joe & the Fish, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Buffalo Springfield, Doors, Byrds and Quicksilver Messenger Service were setting the pace.

All the clubs were full of Psychedelic sounds and US Acid Rock and there were a plethora of smaller bands like Blossom Toes, Andwella’s Dream, Syn, Idle Race, Misunderstood and Dantalion’s Chariot.

The fashions also reflected this Psychedelia. Paisley and fluorescent colours were in. It was all colourful and voluminous – very trippy.

The repercussions are still audible today!
