53 and imploding – the foreword

53 and imploding

This was the third in my experimental fragmentary autobiographical novels. It was primarily concerned with death. I had reached an amazing fifty three years of age and was aware that time appeared to be flying past ever faster. I was concerned that I might not be able to fit it all in. I had been forced to give up playing football and was aware of aches, pains and unfitness.

When I approached 60 I took up a fitness campaign, lost forty pounds and now I am definitely going to live for ever.

Here is an extract. I hope you like it:

53 and Imploding

By

OPHER Goodwin

Foreword

I am 53 years old. That astonishes me. I am growing old. Already my body aches and shows a strange inability to co-ordinate itself and a lack of suppleness that makes me almost doddery. I am overweight and unfit and have little desire to be otherwise. I am constantly tired. The wild creature of my youth is a crazy rampaging fool I envy but am detached from. I am fast becoming an old fool. Ah, that we have lived so long to see our dreams destroyed.

Seconds. Can’t you feel them ticking. Seconds.

I can’t write ends. What is an end? Nothing ends. I can only attempt to write beginnings. Even that is absurd. I can write in seconds. All of them are now. Each second is an action; a thought; an idea; a memory; an almighty beginning and an almighty end.

There is nothing in the past. Even my memories are new. They are events seen through these old eyes, thought through these old neurones. Each memory is refined and twisted. We remember the bits we want and some of the bits that we don’t want but most is tossed into the sea of forever. We have no history but the one we build for ourselves.

Seconds? How many left? A few? A few hundred? A few million? It’s not he seconds that count; it’s what you fill them with.

I love old things: rocks; buildings; trees. I love old things because they speak to me of forever.

It’s strange how we conveniently forget. We build huge cities and think they will stand forever. We excavate old cities and wonder at their splendour without realising that all our cities will burn, be toppled and forgotten. New cultures may wonder over them and marvel at our cunning – the things we have done with our seconds.

This is how we filled our seconds.

We are not forever. We are only a second in forever, a blink, a swearword, a gasp and gone. We may only ever see a few of the countless zillions of stars blink out. In time they all will run down like drained batteries and the lights will go out. They’ll be no one around to pull the cord or flick the switch.

Ha. Ha. Ha. I laugh at your vanity of forever. What a fool it makes of you. Genuflection. It takes seconds.

Sex and death – a bit too simplistic as a summary of importance. It’s the things you do with your seconds that makes the difference. Do you live your life with merit? Is each second of choice well decided? Is there purpose in your existence or do you drool and stagger round like cattle – ‘Pretty cool here. Get pissed, get stoned, fuck and dress to impress’ ?

Fine lines – there are fine lines between cool and fool, smart and fart, bright and shite.

Fun comes before the fall. Stuff your mind and stuff your heart. Yet it matters not – pleasures taken carelessly or considered – excess or moderation – purpose and pomposity. It’s all the same worms, same stars blinking, same journey, and same end.

No. It is not where you are going that matters. Religion has really fucked up there. It’s the journey. It’s the way you travel that matters. It’s what you do with all those seconds you are busy squandering. Now don’t get me wrong. At the end of a story who is to say if the hero, villain or bit player had the most worthy part to play? Who’s to judge the value of a few seconds spend watching football on the telly, reading a novel or writing.

I choose to write. I pluck these words from the holes in my brain. The novel is dead. There are no stories. There are no beginnings and ends. Reality is continuous.

There is only sharing. I am sharing some thoughts in a one way conversation for no purpose other than to stimulate response. I shall not be aware of that response as likely as not there will be no one to read this and if anyone ever does I’ll likely be already dead. That makes me smile. Still it has the same validity as you watching Brazilians juggle bladders immaculately.

That is the essence. Whatever you do with, or in those seconds we call life, make each one of them a honed jewel. They all count. Do it with all your spirit.

I am writing into a mirror. There are no pretty stories, no vignettes, no cameos and no ends. Even the very end, when the whole universe is a bunch of cold cinders and dissipated heat, will go on forever.

This is not a beginning. This is not even the middle. This is merely somewhere down the road.

Are we humans one day going to turn into huge sea-squirts?

One day it is possible that humans will reach puberty and transform into huge rubbery, sedentary sea-squirts. Here’s why:

Most people now accept evolution. It is pretty indisputable unless you are a creationist nut. We humans are apes (a third species of chimpanzee actually). We are mammals who evolved out of reptiles. The reptiles evolved out of amphibia who evolved out of fish. All straightforward.

The interesting point I wish to make concerns the evolution of fish.

The fish evolved out of chordates – little fish-like creatures with notochords like amphioxus. That’s where the story gets interesting.

Once upon a time, long, long ago, at the bottom of the ocean, there lived a family of sea-squirts. They looked like plants but they were really animals. They never moved though. They sat on the seabed sucking water through their siphons and extracting particles of food. It was a lazy way of life. They never had to exert their long cylindrical bodies. They just sat and squirted water.

When they wanted to reproduce they simply released their eggs and sperm into the water. The eggs grew into little tadpole-like larvae who swam away to settle on a distant patch of ocean bed where they planted themselves and grew into indolent adults.

Something went wrong. A mutation in a gene meant that the larvae, instead of maturing into adults, became sexually mature and continued swimming around. This is known as neotony. These are what evolved into fish.

Now the genes that coded for the transition in sea-squirts lay dormant in fish. It will have been passed down the line to all subsequent animals. The majority of our DNA is rubbish. It is old genes and meaningless sections of DNA that code for nothing. It is called satellite DNA. But if those genes were to become activated we would, on reaching puberty, transform into giant sea-squirts. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Perhaps I shouldn’t have mentioned this? It might spark a government weapons policy. They might create a gene activator, put it into a country’s water supply and transform an enemy’s entire population into quiescent sea-squirts!

Still – I suppose that is better than using nuclear weapons?

Who am I?

I am a prolific writer of Science Fiction, Rock Music and alternative style semi-autobiographical books and fiction. I have written over 50 books. If you’re looking for something different then you have found it! Just buy one from Amazon and see!

My influences include Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Captain Beefheart, Allen Ginsberg, Christopher Hitchins, Roy Harper, Bob Dylan, Margaret Atwood, Woody Guthrie and Kurt Vonnegut Jnr.

I was born in 1949 in the Thames Delta in the deep South outside London. I grew up in the 1960s and was thoroughly immersed in the London scene and counter-culture. I was a student through all those heady days and lapped up the idealism and optimism of the times. We knew we were changing the world and bringing new sensibilities to bear. Those were the days that spawned feminism, the green movement, anti-capitalism and civil rights.

I was there through the whole gamut of Rock Music. As a kid I heard Little Richard on the radio and then there was the Beatles, Psychedelia and the London Underground, Acid Rock and the West Coast alternative culture, IT, OZ and a thriving Rock scene and cultural tsunami.

I got to see most of the important acts – Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Cream, Roy Harper, Captain Beefheart, Country Joe & the Fish, Muddy Waters, Pink Floyd, Son House and Bo Diddley – and hosts of others. I went to all the big festivals and events.

The 1960s counter-culture was not a fashion statement; it was a way of life. It looked at the boring establishment, the old-boys network, the stereotypical attire, the joyless lack of creativity, the conventions, religion, politics, blatant selfish greed, exploitation, inherent racism and sexism and looked to create something better. I was part of it.

We stood up for our ideals – the anti-war movement, liberation of sex, and the bringing of freedom and colour into a drab 1950s post-war society.

Then came Punk and the music went on and on and on……

On a creative front, having discovered that despite my passion, I have no talent for music, I went into the realm of writing.

In the 1970s the energy and creativity dropped out of the counter-culture. Earning a living loomed and I went into teaching where I stayed true to my ideals. I extolled the virtues of fun, freedom and the joy of creativity. I brought a bit of colour into the profession and did things my way. I must have been successful because I rose up to Headteacher and my school became one of the best in the country. It’s Open, Caring, Friendly ethos was mine and I proved it worked. If you treated young people respectfully and made learning fun everything would work. It did.

During the course of my teaching career I built up a large number of books. I wrote whatever took my fancy. I never wrote for financial gain or to get famous; I wrote what I was interested in, moved by or felt the urge to do. I produced Sci-Fi to alternative fiction and Rock biography and history – whatever I enjoyed. I always harboured a desire to make a living out of writing but was always more than content to be a teacher.

To be a teacher is a privilege. A teacher is the equivalent of the tribes shaman; the holder of wisdom, dispenser of knowledge. I was happy with that.

On the family front I fell in love when I was eighteen and married in a great event in the woods in 1971. We have been together ever since and have four very dynamic, individualistic and vibrant kids who are changing the world in their own ways. They fill me with great love and hope for the future. My five grandchildren are growing up and are enthusiastic, loving citizens of the world.

I believe in equality, tolerance, justice and freedom. I respect other people’s points of view and do not expect people to share the same beliefs as me. I work in my own way to produce a positive zeitgeist and would like to live in a world where there is harmony between people and respect for the environment.

I deplore violence, fanaticism, war, coercion and intolerance.

I love smiles, love, argument and beauty in all its many forms.

I am enraged and saddened by what we are doing to the natural world through the pressure of our numbers, pollution and destruction of habitat.

I now live in the North of England and continue writing and doing my bit to change the Zeitgeist.

I Was But Now

I Was But Now

I once was an elephant

And kept my dreams in a trunk.

I once was a crocodile

With a tale in my tail.

I once was a giraffe

With my head in the clouds.

I once was a hippo

Wading through the depths.

But now I’m a man

Whose thoughts fill the world.

I Was But Now

This was nothing but a bit of fun. I was playing with words and ideas – trunks and tails. But then there was the glimmer of some greater depth of meaning.

These days we blog and our thoughts are transmitted to the very ends of the world instantly. Ideas are dangerous. They can catch fire and transform society. They can enrage, calm or excite.

Ideas are the thing that man does best.

We are desperate for some new ideas.

Kurt Vonegut Quotes

Kurt is one of my favourite writers. I love his wit, easy flowing style and great ideas. He is a man with great humanity. I like that.

Here’s a few quotes that I found fun and insightful:

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.
We do become the sort of person we try to be. We have to be careful who we ally ourselves to.
I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don’t let anybody tell you different.
That sums up my philosophy too. We have no purpose.
I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center.
That’s kind of edgy.
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, “If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.”
A great philosophy. We rarely take enough note of how good things are most of the time. We populate our comfort and happiness with imaginary fears.
Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.
The best medicine.
Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.
That is most of the time I’ve lived!!
A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.
Another great philosophy!!
Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.
Best make the most of each and every moment we have. It all goes much too fast.
True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country.
They are only flawed people pretending to know more than the rest of us – no brighter, no better – and in most cases a lot nastier!
Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter can be said to remedy anything.
The innocence and unrelenting hope of childhood! If only!

Jack Kerouac Quotes – A man who saw an lternative way of living.

When I read On the Road and Dharma Bums when I was seventeen they altered my life. I saw something more worthwhile than the pursuit of money and power, I saw an alternative way of living that was more mad, vital and alive. It was the crazy excitement of Jazz, poetry and Zen – that was seeking kicks and enlightenment – that wanted something more than security and boredom. I knew there had to be more – be more spontaneity – be more excitement – be more meaning. I wanted to live – the colours to be vivid – to find out what life was about – and to have no limits!

41e79xd-x7l-_ac_us160_

I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.
Well that’s a beginning. To be confused about the stupidity of this society is a start. If you are confused by what you see around you then you can either ignore it and carry on or try to figure out a better way of doing things.
Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.
It is the pioneers with an alternative vision who are the real inventors – the crazy people who won’t listen to reason and follow the crowd.
My fault, my failure, is not in the passions I have, but in my lack of control of them.
Passions are the essence of life but they can be so destructive too.
Maybe that’s what life is… a wink of the eye and winking stars.
We are a flash in eternity. Our lives are over far too soon – I’m hardly getting started!
All human beings are also dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together.
We dream of better futures – more fun, more love, more freedom, more understanding and a better world.
I hope it is true that a man can die and yet not only live in others but give them life, and not only life, but that great consciousness of life.
I believe our lives send out ripples through the world around us. All the people around us are affected. They in turn affect everyone around them. We need a tsunami of compassion.
All of life is a foreign country.
Understanding it is crucial. We don’t even speak the same language. We journey through life getting our kicks and seeking truth.

Kurt Vonnegutt Junior Quote – Where do I get my ideas from?

‘Where do I get my ideas from?

You might as well have asked that of Beethoven. He was goofing around in Germany like everybody else, and all of a sudden this stuff came gushing out of him.

It was music.

I was goofing around like everybody else in Indiana, and all of a sudden stuff came gushing out.

It was disgust with civilisation.’

Kurt Vonnegutt Jnr

I think I feel the same!
