Tuli Kupferberg Quotes – The Fugs

Tuli was a founder member of the Fugs and a truly interesting man, poet, singer, songwriter, performer, writer and personality. He was a pacifist and a libertarian. He used a lot of humour!

“There was once a big atomic bomb
That wanted to be a bullet.
His friends all asked why, when he was such a big atomic bomb, he would want to be a tiny bullet.
“I miss”, he sighed, “the personal touch.”
I love this one. Once you had a sword and you had to get close, risk life and limb and apply strength, cunning and skill to kill your foe. It made it all immediate and terrible. You knew exactly what was involved in death – the fear, terror and agony. Now you just press a button and can wipe out millions of faceless people. It’s too easy.
“When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge.”
We need to break a few patterns today. Better things need to emerge.
Nobody who lived through the ’50s thought the ’60s could’ve existed. So there’s always hope.
There is always hope. Out of dreadful things beautiful things can emerge. I am an optimist dreamer.
These were some of Tuli’s 1001 ways to beat the Draft put out by Sparrow.

724. Bring a gun and a target and at an appropriate moment (say the eye exam) lean the target against the wall and start shooting at it, screaming: “Kill the Commies! Kill the fucken Commies!”

427. Tell them God is on your side; if they say God is on their side, answer OK, it’s a draw, let’s go home.

845. Secede from the U.S. Set up your own country and demand to be treated as a prisoner of war under the Geneva agreements.

I’m not totally convinced that they would work in the way intended.

The Fugs – Kill For Peace

537-essential-rock-albums-cover51cqppsx8zl-_ac_us160_537-essential-rock-albums-cover

When the Fugs came out they were the most extreme group ever. Their whole ethos was free love, plenty of sex and peace. It was the height of the Vietnam War and Kill For Peace seemed to sum up the whole thing.

There was racism, hatred and a fear of communism. Communists were the Muslims of the day. They were after taking over the whole world. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, United States, Africa …. it was endless!

The Fugs sent up the whole xenophobic sentiment of the times. The sixties culture was inclusive of race and religion.  We did not want some bloody Vietnam War. We had nothing against the Vietnamese.

The irony of killing for peace was a strong message.

Kill For Peace

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
near or middle or very far East

far or near or very middle East

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
if you don’t like the people or the way that they talk
if you don’t like their manners or the way that they walk

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
if you don’t kill them then the Chinese will
if you don’t want America to play second fiddle

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
if you let them live they may subvert the Prussians
if you let them live they might love the Russians

kill, kill, kill!
kill ’em! kill ’em! strafe them gook creeps!

the only gook an American can trust
is a gook that’s got his yellow head bust

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, it will feel so good
like my captain said it should

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, it will give you a mental ease
kill, it will give you a big release

kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace
kill, kill, kill for peace

kill! kill! kill! kill! kill!

‘Kill for Peace’

The irony of the statement is self-explanatory!

Fugs – Kill for Peace – satirical lyrics full of irony.

fugsforpeaceES_01

The fugs were a great sixties band. They fought for sexual liberation and peace and somehow combined the two into anarchic mayhem.

Their satirical songs combined theatre and politics. They took on the establishment and epitomised the sixties ‘can do’ culture. We had them scared for a while. We changed the world but we were ultimately bought out and sold down the river.

This song is as fresh today as it was nearly fifty years ago!!

How times and bullets fly!

Fugs – Wide Wide River – meaningful river about politics and the mess they make that we have to live in.

fugs fugsforpeaceES_01

I thought this was appropriate in this election year. The Fugs were a highly political and cynical band. I loved their anarchy, madness and enthusiasm. They just did it.

There were no holds barred and no subjects too extreme. The Fugs were a law unto themselves. This song is about the mess that politicians have made of society. We live in the mess they create for us and it could be so much better.

If humanity stopped wasting most of its resources on war, greed and power and started dealing with the real issues of poverty, inequality, environmental destruction and overpopulation we could have a brilliant life for everyone. They’d rather have power for themselves.

I thought it was most appropriate at this time with the telling line: ‘Where you end up voting for the lesser of two evils?’

The hypocrisy and stupid lies of politicians shine down through the annals of history.

Wide Wide River

River of shit
River of shit
Flow on, flow on, river of shit
Right from my toes
On up to my nose
Flow on, flow on, river of shit
I’ve been swimming
In this river of shit
More than 20 years
And I’m getting tired of it
Don’t like swimming
Hope it’ll run dry
Got to go on swimming
Cause I don’t want to die

(spoken with gospel sound in background):
Who dealt this mess, anyway?
Yea, it’s an old card player’s term,
but sometimes you can use the old switcheroo and it can be applied to …
Frontal politics
What I mean is …
Who was it that set up a system,
supposedly democratic system,
Where you end up always voting for the lesser of two evils?
I mean, Was George Washington the lesser of two evils?
Sometimes I wonder …
You got some guy that says
“For God sake, we’ve got to stop having violence in this country.”
While he’s spending 16,000 dollars a second snuffing gooks.

(gospel sound musical ending with:
A wiiiiiiiiiiiiide, big brown river, yea, bringing health, wealth, and prosperity to every man, women, and child.
Spoken:
Oh I can feel another 1000 years
Of the flapjacks of Sorrow! Unless!
Unless we make 2000 A.D.! 2000 A.D.
Our glorious deadline
A glorious deadline to make the
World a better place!
Or else the flapjacks of sorrow
Are going to slide down our throats
Slide down our throats
For another millennium
Of pain and war and oppression
And all our children’s children’s children’s
Children’s children children
Shall have to wade and to swim
In the same grim river
In which we now swim
Sing along with us
Sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing!
