How to write the most Popular Blog – the definitive answer.

How to write the most Popular Blog – the definitive answer.

IMG_0504

Having been blogging for two years now and had the opportunity to look at a great number of highly successful sites I think I now have a handle on what it is that makes a blog popular or unpopular.

Here are my observations:

  • Do not write anything controversial
  • Avoid Religion and Politics
  • Write about celebrity trivia
  • Write about food, the latest fashion, make-up, shopping and what you had to eat last night.
  • Write about hanging out with your mates at the shopping mall.
  • Write about buying stuff.
  • Write about love.
  • Write about fate that always finds a way through – with happy endings.
  • Do not write about war, starvation, inequality or environmental destruction.
  • Write about heart-warming stories of good prevailing over evil.
  • Write about comedy films, soap operas, strictly,  light reading and TV soaps.
  • Avoid heavy literature, Arty films or anything with depth.
  • Write upbeat poems – full of humour.
  • Put in cartoons.
  • Have lots of humour – slapstick and silliness.
  • Write about current Pop Music.
  • Do not mention viruses, guns, rape, terrorism, Brexit, Trump or scary stuff.
  • Write about winning lots of money – and how to win lots of money.
  • Write about style, make-up and being trendy.
  • Do not mention illness, disability or misery.
  • Avoid swearing and real sex.
  • Do not write about cruelty, the extermination of animals or the climate crisis.
  • Write about sexy boyfriends/girlfriends and stars – but in a ‘nice’ way.
  • Write about nice homes and fast cars.
  • Do not mention death.
  • Be aware that most people want to live in a bubble that is nice, shallow and shared, where everything is pleasant, fun and romantic. They are happy being entertained and consuming. They do not want the real world to intrude.

Well that’s me done for! Can’t say that I do anything right in terms of gaining popularity.

But then I can’t see the point of blogging if all you ever do is trivial and pointless.

Who cares about popularity!!!

If you ain’t got PASSION and PURPOSE you’re wasting your life!!

TUNE IN TO OPHER’S WORLD FOR A DOSE OF REALITY!!!!

Men – what use are they? Some women would happily do away with them.

They are big, smelly, violent, aggressive, silent, unemotional, twerps.

The problem as I perceive it is that we are such a new species, and civilisation is so recent, that the habits we have are stone-age. We haven’t had time to adapt to this new concept of society. Men are still living in the tribal mentality – fighting on behalf of the community to ensure we have enough territory to provide the food we need – being aggressive and terrifying to warn off other clans and predators – gaining status through brave, aggressive acts – being strong and violent to foreigners and lions.

The trouble is that we live in towns and cities now. We get our food from supermarkets. The foreigners live down our street. There are no lions.

Men have become superfluous.

We don’t need big muscles when we have power tools that children and females can control.

We don’t need tattoos and short hairstyles that look aggressive because there isn’t any territory to protect. We all live together in big communities. There is plenty of food.

We don’t need to produce smells to warn off predators. There aren’t any predators in cities.

We do not need to be aggressive and violent anymore.

Once the aggressive, violent, courageous nutters were a valued part of the community. They protected us all. Now they are a throwback. They are out of date.

In a modern society it is not about brutality; it is about intelligence, empathy, partnership and responsibility.

It is alright to be emotional.

Women and foreigners are on an equal footing. We can all contribute equally. Society, global travel, and technology have levelled the playing field.

Men need to adapt to the modern world and move out of the jungle.

We can love, cry, empathise, feel, cuddle, laugh, reach out and relax.

This is the modern world – there’s no room for the violent cave-man. We’ve moved on!

Grow your hair! Be soft! Be open and friendly! Be kind! Be welcoming!

The new, modern man must learn to compete with women.

(Likewise, the modern woman has to stop pandering to the Neanderthals. Worshipping that smelly, violent monster of the past is only encouraging them!)

These are my six books of poetry. They are available as paperback or on Kindle from Amazon – all for under £5 for a paperback. You could buy the whole lot for just £27.62!!

They are not conventional poetry books. They are like you find on my blog with a page of explanatory prose followed by the poem. The prose is as important as the poem to me.

Poetry – A HOLOCAUST – a poem about mass destruction.

Poetry – A HOLOCAUST – a poem about mass destruction.

IMG_0493

When I painted this piece back in 1974 I called it nuclear warhead.

I wanted to have an evil face peering out of a nuclear explosion. The lips kiss the ground. The seething, billowing clouds of the nuclear inferno form the sulci and gyri of the cerebrum. The eyes peer out from flame. Behind it are the lights of a city.

A Holocaust

I wrote this after reading a poem that talked of Holocaust. I am sorry I cannot track it down and so cannot tell you the poet’s name. He was castigated for applying the term holocaust to things such as poverty. He was told it was disrespectful.

I do not agree.

The holocaust perpetrated by the fascists in Germany against the Jews, Gypsies, Trade Unionists, Communists and others was a horrendous crime of unimaginable cruelty and scale. Yet it is one of many such crimes. They occur with monotonous regularity. Cruelty and barbarity has been an ingredient of human nature throughout time.

We run the world to create inequality from which millions die. Poverty is as much a holocaust as the Nazis orchestrated. It is there by design.

Genocides are not always concentrated in one vicinity.

ISIS is demonstrating the barbarity of humanity as they think up the most sadistic methods of killing people.

The terrorist bombers loading shrapnel and nails into their bombs must imagine the flesh and organs being ripped. The thought of these horrific injuries probably causes them satisfaction.

But for me the greatest crime of all is not that inflicted by people on other people; it is the mindless destruction of nature, the slaughter of our wild-life, the cruelty inflicted on animals.

As the relentless intrusion into habitat, the poaching, hunting and building, the deliberate inflicting of pain, continues on a daily basis; each and every day is a holocaust for nature.

A Holocaust

A holocaust

Six million burnt.

A holocaust

Pol Pot and Uganda.

A holocaust

Rwanda and Sarijevo.

Genocide on scales unimaginable.

Repeated with regularity.

Out of the psyche

Of humanity.

A holocaust. A holocaust. A holocaust.

Nagasaki.

Hiroshima.

Dachau.

Auschwitz.

A holocaust. A holocaust. A holocaust.

Every decade

Another atrocity

Is designed.

Yet

A holocaust

For nature

Every single day.

A holocaust. A holocaust. A holocaust.

Some words of wisdom from a life that is beginning to get long.

Some words of wisdom from a life that is beginning to get long.

Some words of wisdom from a life that is beginning to get long.

Being cool is a state of mind. You can’t buy it, wear it or pretend it.

Most people, on their own, are pleasant and helpful – put them in a group and a lot of them become spiteful, greedy and vicious.

Money does not buy happiness. It buys opportunities to do things and own things. The times when I’ve been happiest are when I’ve had no money.

There are no short cuts. Every short cut ends up taking longer, costing more and ending up worse.

Life is luck. Sometimes you’re there at the right time in the right place.

Making decisions with your glands is not a good idea.

Violence and hatred creates violence and hatred.

Humanity is a disaster for most other life on this planet.

It’s time we stopped electing glib psychopaths into office.

Charisma is rarely good.

Religion and politics are all about power.

Fun is good.

Reading can be as good as sex (in its own way) – but less messy.

Each moment is precious – fill it with wonder, joy, happiness, love and creativity!

Are plants conscious?

Are plants conscious?

P1070652P1070621P1080206

We are very anthropomorphic and judge any and everything by its similarity to us.

Plants are very different to us.

Because of the way they feed they do not require specialised organs. They do not need to move.

But plant cells are extremely complex – much more complex than any animal cells. They are much more evolved.

Our brain, which is the seat of our consciousness, works on ionic balances creating changes in cell polarisation.

All plant cells utilise the same system.

Is it possible that the whole of a plant operates like our brains?

Do plants think?

If so this has great implications for vegetarians and salad eaters.

To be eaten alive cannot be pleasant.

Reporting on my death

Reporting on my death

Reporting on my death

My death is not real.

I do not know when, how or what form it will take.

I have no beliefs of an after-life. That seems too human a concept to me. My death will be the end of my consciousness. It will be similar to going to sleep. I will simply not wake.

My mind has no concept of the oblivion during sleep when my consciousness no longer operates. It is a little death. There is no sadness and grief in that state for the person concerned. There is only nothingness. The time evaporates. It is empty. The sadness of death only comes with contemplation. We torment ourselves needlessly. The sadness is in the loss of this peephole into the universe. For the dead there is no perception, no sense of loss, no suffering. They simply no longer exist.

Instead of dwelling on death we should be celebrating the wonder of our lives. For this flash of time we have a peephole into a wondrous universe. It is brief, measured in seconds, and it is miraculous. We should maximise that the experience. It will not come again.

I have enjoyed it greatly. I have filled it with as much as I could pack in.

That is a life worth living.

I know I have been lucky. I have loved and been loved. I have read, written, travelled and made friends. I have tasted the best and tested the boundaries.

I shall have few regrets.

My death will be a sadness. Of that I am sure. It will be a sadness to me that I can no longer extend my vocabulary of delights, I can no longer share with the people I love and my peephole will close. It will be a sadness for people who love me.

But no regrets. We have shared and loved enough.

My funeral must be a celebration. I am writing this on a boat travelling to South America. The adventure continues. That is what must be acknowledged. If my life had been empty and mundane that might be a different matter. But it has been full. I am replete. I have already lived a hundred lives and loved as much. What more could any man ask?

Yet still there are decisions.

I vacillate between leaving my body to medical science as my brave mother did, or being buried in a wicker basket so that my flesh may return to the cycle of life. No lead lined coffin for me. I want the living things to have their fill. I have loved my biology.

I have chosen my music well – Little Richard – Rip it Up and Roy Harper – When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease are the two essentials. They’ll be lots of photos of me and I’ll write a piece myself. It’ll be good to talk from beyond the grave. I might even record something. No doubt a few other people might want to say things about me.

I need to plan it a bit more thoroughly.

Strange and ironic– that I now, planning a funeral, I need to flesh out the bones.

The thought of my funeral makes me smile.

If you enjoy my poems or anecdotes why not purchase a paperback of anecdotes for £7.25 or a kindle version for free.

Hope – I thought it was worth circulating this. We all need a bit of hope.

Hope – I thought it was worth circulating this. We all need a bit of hope.

Dear amazing Avaazers,If you ever doubt that our efforts together are worth it, or if you’re just needing a bit of hope and light in your day, read on.

Bet you won’t be able to stop :).

Avaaz Movement Wins

Fin whales swim free

For years, Icelandic millionaire badboy Kristjan Loftsson has massacred hundreds of endangered giant fin whales. But no more!! Working with allies, a million of us pressed the Dutch government to close their ports to him, then German Avaazers helped to block ports there too. Then we caused a media and political storm in the Caribbean where Loftsson’s ship was registered. After years of pressure, he’s called off the hunt!

“The global pressure brought by the Avaaz community has no doubt played a big role in Loftsson’s welcome decision.”
– Vanessa Williams-Grey, Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
Saudi Arabia: No More Weapons For You

Saudi Arabia is a human rights nightmare, but after they bombed schools and hospitals in Yemen, calls rose in Europe for an arms embargo. When EU politicians started to waver under the pressure of powerful Saudi lobbyists, 740,000 Avaazers weighed in, flooding members of parliament with messages and calls. And we won — for the first time in history, a Western parliament voted to ban arms sales to Saudi Arabia! Now the pressure is on for governments to follow the European lead.

“We’ve received calls from Scotland to France to Yemen calling for action, Avaaz played a major role to bring this message to the European Parliament.”
– Alyn Smith, Member of European Parliament
Blocking Monsanto's most profitable poison

Monsanto’s glyphosate weedkiller is everywhere, providing much of the mega-corporation’s revenue. So when UN experts said it likely causes cancer, 1.5 million of us called to ban it! With Europe set to re-approve its licence for 15 years, Avaaz delivered our petition and thousands of us sent urgent messages to our governments. In the final hour, support collapsed, and the EU commission was forced to postpone the vote! We’ll keep the pressure up until we get the ban our planet needs.

“The Avaaz campaign helped to raise awareness and concern of the general public about glyphosate. This helped me as a parliamentarian to work on this issue… Stay with us in this fight”
– Pavel Poc, MEP and Vice Chair of the Environment, Health and Food Safety Committee for the European Parliament.
Winning for Palestine

After horrendous civilian death in Gaza, almost 2 million of us called on 6 major companies to stop profiting from the Israeli military occupation of Palestine. Our movement sent messages to CEOs, held rallies from London to Ramallah, met with government and corporate officials, and lobbied other countries to cut ties with those companies. And as of last month, 3 of the 6 have pulled out!! It’s a tactic that’s having impact in the struggle for freedom and peace.

“The 1.8 million signature Avaaz petition was powerful, and we hope that Avaaz members will continue campaigning.”
– Mahmoud Nawajaa, BDS Civil Society Coordinator in Palestine
Saving the lost Refugee Children

Thousands of Syrian children seeking refuge are lost in Europe, without their parents and preyed upon by child traffickers. That’s why 40,000 of us donated to fund lawyers to find them, provide legal support, and get them to safety. Dozens of children are already being helped. And just this week, three boys arrived in London and were reunited with their families for the first time in months!

“Nothing I could say could convey how grateful I truly am to all of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
– One of the boys on arriving in the UK
Somalia ban FGM

The Prime Minister of Somalia just joined over a million of us by signing our petition to support a full ban on female genital mutilation! Somali women’s rights experts told us that global pressure could help them outlaw female genital mutilation — but we never imagined that the Somali Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and dynamic Minister for Women and Human Rights would respond by signing the petition, too! Working with these leaders, UNICEF and survivors, it’s now likely that FGM, done to 98% of Somali women, will become illegal!

“I am committed to outlaw FGM in Somalia through legislation, advocacy, education, and community engagement.”
– Somali Prime Minister, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmark, as he signed our petition.

Shining Our Light in 2016

These battles are part of deeper struggles — between forces of love and fear, hope and despair, ignorance and understanding. Sometimes Avaaz campaigns are about shining our movement’s light into these struggles, to help shift our culture and politics. Here’s some awesome light-shining examples from the last few months:

Celebrating Greek Heros

Inspired by Greek fishermen and pensioners who have saved and cared for thousands of desperate refugee families, Avaaz member, Alkmini, started a petition to nominate these unsung heroes for the Nobel Peace Prize. Then more than 600,000 of us backed the request, and Desmond Tutu endorsed an official submission by 230 academics to the Nobel Committee. This moving story of humanity triumphing over fear captured the world’s media from CNN to the BBC.

“In times when fear and racism are threatening our societies and Europe is raising fences, the big mobilisation of Avaaz members made the voice of humanity echo loudly around the world.”
– Co-Founder of the Leros Solidarity Network, Matina Katsiveli
Guatemala Slavery

After decades of silence, 14 brave women just went to court to confront the Guatemalan generals who kept them as sex slaves. As they entered the courtroom we surrounded them with love, delivering messages from over 40,000 Avaaz members across Latin America. The women’s courage prevailed and for the first time ever these generals were convicted of crimes against humanity!

“I was happy to hear the messages of support. I know I’m not alone, and I wanted to uncover my face when I heard that there are people all around the world that support me.”
– One of the women, Doña Rosa
Cologne

After women were attacked on New Year’s Eve in Germany, a flood of racism and xenophobia spread. Refugee men responded by handing out flowers to women on the streets as a show of respect. To return the gesture and show solidarity and welcome, a hundred female Avaaz members went out to hand flowers back to refugees in Cologne, the site of the attacks. Their video went viral!

“Refugee men handed out flowers to women as a sign of peace. As Avaaz members we wanted to reciprocate this courageous gesture to show that we counter hate with humanity.”
– Maresa, Avaaz member

Achh, that stuff just lifts your heart doesn’t it?

The really crazy part is, those stories are a small fraction of our movement’s work together over the last few months!

What we’re doing matters, we’re winning, and we’re winning in a way that is building the kind of world we dream of for our children. There is much to do, but this is a moment for gratitude for the 43 million scrumptiously wonderful people in this beautiful movement. What a joy it is to do this together.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

With love and gratitude,

Ricken, Alice, Ben, Maria Paz, Emily, Risalat, Mike, Lisa, and the whole Avaaz team.

PS — a big reason Avaaz can do all this is we are 100% funded by small individual donations — no corporate, government, foundation, or large donor money. To keep it all going, click here:

Brussels – All you need is love

IMG_1068

It seems an age ago that we back in the sixties and there was hope.

The world was not a place of butchery and hatred where young people were willing to blow themselves to pieces.

Love was the message.

Young people trekked out across the planet exporting their smiles. Friendship and sharing were the mantra, equality and freedom was the ethos.

The only blot on the landscape was the war in Vietnam.

That world seems so innocent now. But it was love that made it possible. If you meet someone as an equal with a smile and respect you make contact.

Somehow the radicalised young Muslims have been talked into hatred. They feel ostracised from society and have grown to despise it. Gone are the days that all the world wore flares. We are fractured.

It is time to heal.

You do not cure hatred with more hate.

The Beatles have been rather neglected and denigrated of late. They were the greatest band ever because of their genius and adventurousness. They were at the forefront of the sixties culture and they had a knack of summing things up.

All You Need Is Love

My beliefs – Wonder and Awe

I believe wonder and awe play a big role in making life rewarding.

There are lots of things that fill me with wonder and awe. Here are some of them:

Comtemplating the universe and infinity.

Lying back and looking up into the dust of stars and imagining the countless numbers of galaxies and stars. What might all those planets be like? I am fascinated by black holes, quasars, bent space, the speed of light, infinity, dark matter, Stephen Hawkin, Einstein and Newton, and anti-matter universes.

I was told that the estimate is that we only see 4% of what is there.

There are days when I could fall up into the sky and float free.

Contemplating the microcosm.

All around me and inside me is an ocean of subatomic worlds. I appear to be solid yet energy and matter is zooming in and out of me all the time, radioactive particles explode within my brain. There is no solidity. Inside it delves to a different infinity. There are molecules instead of galaxies. Energy roars. Quarks are perpetual motion machines that will keep going until the end.

Rocks, mountains, gorges, canyons, waterfalls and icebergs.

I am attracted to them. Volcanoes, geysers, minerals and watwerfalls. They thrill me. Standing on the rim of Grand Canyon or the Blue Mountains is awesome.

Ancient monuments, temples, churches, mosques, castles, walls, and crumbling ruins.

I am moved by their beauty, their history and the tales they could tell.

Music, art, drama, writing, dance, photography, poetry and all creative outpourings from the spirit and passion of creative people.

I can walk round an art gallery in wonder or rock out at the front of a concert or sit and listen to the words and my spirit soars.

Trees, wild-life, animals and the natural world.

It breaks my heart to see the way it is being trashed. The majesty trees felled, the animals slaughtered, the land raped.

Love, sex, friendship and relationship.

Love gives substance to my life. My loves and friendships are the lodestone of everything I do. My family is a magnetic pull that centres me. Sex is the nearest I get to magic.

Travel.

New people, new places, new customs, new sights – it is stimulating. It is mind expanding. It puts your life in perspective.

I do not need religion. I do not even need spirituality. Spirituality for me is this wonder and awe of being in the midst of such a wondrous place with stupendous experiences.

I fill my life and am sated by it.

I hope anyone who follows my blog will understand what I mean by pluralism. There are many definitions of the word.

What I believe by pluralism is that a society/community can thrive while its members believe in different philosophies, religions, political views, and have different cultural backgrounds. I believe variety brings richness. I believe hybrids are stronger than pedigrees.

That means that as a left-wing antitheist I am happy living with people of all different, races, cultures and religions.

However, I believe that this is only possible if the members of that community adhere to a certain over-riding ethos. For me that ethos is one of tolerance, freedom, equality, democracy, empathy, compassion and respect.

I do not tolerate racism, misogyny, homophobia, or violence.

I believe that pluralism is the counter to fascism and fundamentalism. I also believe that education is the best weapon of all. If it is deployed properly it raises humanity to new levels of compassion and empathy.

My message is – Be nice to each other – build a positive Zeitgeist – look after the planet and all life that exists on it.
