Masculinity in crisis? What is a man? One man’s view!

Men – what use are they? Some women would happily do away with them.

They are big, smelly, violent, aggressive, silent, unemotional, twerps.

The problem as I perceive it is that we are such a new species, and civilisation is so recent, that the habits we have are stone-age. We haven’t had time to adapt to this new concept of society. Men are still living in the tribal mentality – fighting on behalf of the community to ensure we have enough territory to provide the food we need – being aggressive and terrifying to warn off other clans and predators – gaining status through brave, aggressive acts – being strong and violent to foreigners and lions.

The trouble is that we live in towns and cities now. We get our food from supermarkets. The foreigners live down our street. There are no lions.

Men have become superfluous.

We don’t need big muscles when we have power tools that children and females can control.

We don’t need tattoos and short hairstyles that look aggressive because there isn’t any territory to protect. We all live together in big communities. There is plenty of food.

We don’t need to produce smells to warn off predators. There aren’t any predators in cities.

We do not need to be aggressive and violent anymore.

Once the aggressive, violent, courageous nutters were a valued part of the community. They protected us all. Now they are a throwback. They are out of date.

In a modern society it is not about brutality; it is about intelligence, empathy, partnership and responsibility.

It is alright to be emotional.

Women and foreigners are on an equal footing. We can all contribute equally. Society, global travel, and technology have levelled the playing field.

Men need to adapt to the modern world and move out of the jungle.

We can love, cry, empathise, feel, cuddle, laugh, reach out and relax.

This is the modern world – there’s no room for the violent cave-man. We’ve moved on!

Grow your hair! Be soft! Be open and friendly! Be kind! Be welcoming!

The new, modern man must learn to compete with women.

(Likewise, the modern woman has to stop pandering to the Neanderthals. Worshipping that smelly, violent monster of the past is only encouraging them!)

These are my six books of poetry. They are available as paperback or on Kindle from Amazon – all for under £5 for a paperback. You could buy the whole lot for just £27.62!!

They are not conventional poetry books. They are like you find on my blog with a page of explanatory prose followed by the poem. The prose is as important as the poem to me.

  1. To be Masculine, means you can write well and we have both of those qualities. When you have the chance, please check out our blog at Gastradamus and let us know what you think of, “The Bald and the Brestless”

  2. I liked it when men were men and they would protect the woman – depending on the woman. Now modern man, well he is scared of the women. Hate seeing men doing everything the woman wants, with their “aprons”, not for me.

    1. Morning Anna – hope the haircut suits!
I think men should be strong in a different way – without violence and aggression. Being more emotional and open does not have to mean soft and doing what they are told. I don’t think I’m a softee.

  3. Hello Opher, I think there is nothing nicer than a strong man who you know is there for you to love you and protect you – that is just what I would have liked but didn’t get.

Spent the day in Frinton, got pampered in the hair salon even a lovely head massage, hair completely different lighter highlights to match in with my own natural colour, short, bouncy and a cross between Jamie Lee Curtis and the late Victoria Wood, love it. Treated myself to lunch and walked down to the Sea and home about 5. Boys loved my hair so that’s ok. Went for a short walk in evening with David and Daisy, tired – had a good day, surprised myself.

Hope you are ok and windows turned out well, don’t take any chances on ladders.

    1. Sounds like a perfect day. Just what you need. Haircut sounds great.
I’m spending most of today up on the roof painting and doing the cladding. It’s harder than it looks. I haven’t fallen off and killed myself once yet!

      1. You should be very careful up on the roof, I never minded climbing ladders after David died and trying to do jobs up high, but the years roll on Opher and it does not get any easier, I get nervous on ladders now. Purchased a garden safety ladder and extension last year, I think it’s been used maybe 4 times only. Let me know when you have finished the job then I can stop worrying!

You are right that I needed that day, it may have only been a hair salon, but it done me good going out, especially to push myself and the walking. Shall be going back to Frinton every 6 weeks now on.

      2. Back down to earth without a bump – one dormer painted! Job half done. I now have to move the scaffolding, rip the rotten cladding off, saw the new bits and nail them up and paint them. I hope the weather holds!
You’re right – I’m not as agile as I used to be. I have to go carefully on the roof. A night on the tiles used to mean having a bit more fun than this.
Glad you had a good time in Frinton. Keep walking Daisy! Push yourself!

  4. Careful on that roof. I am going to cut my other conifer in my front garden, have a new cordless, last one I cut through cable first time ever. Its sunny here and rather warm. Had my INR this morning good result don’t have to go back for three weeks, pleased with that. Watch you step on that roof, its rather dangerous for you to be up there.

    1. Good to hear your INR is good – things are going well!!
I’m OK on the roof – I can fly!!
(Unfortunately only for short periods of time.)

      1. Have a listen to our radio programmes and let me know what you think. They might not be up your street music-wise but we had fun. It’s great that they went out on hospital radio. They reported that all the sick people suddenly got well and left!

  5. I pressed what you had on your blog and it said “file not found”, do you understand what I am saying, I’m not good at the internet. I would like to hear it, maybe I did it wrong, did I?

Take it everything went ok with the windows and you got down safely. I cut the conifer, it’s so long, but before the end the damn Black/Decker battery ran out, so have to finish tomorrow, came in 7.15, getting dinner now. Don’t go up on that roof again. Lovely you will be seeing all the Children, I would love to have Grandchildren sitting on my lap.

    1. That’s very strange. Which one was it that wasn’t working – the Merseybeat or Psychedelia? I’ll have a check and see if I can fix it.

Didn’t fall off the roof again. Started on the second dormer. Maybe finish it tomorrow! That would be good. This cladding is quite difficult to do. It’s harder than I thought. We’ll see. First one looks good though. I don’t think anybody believed I could do it. I’d not very good at woodwork!

      Grandchildren are great but exhausting!

    2. Checked both – Merseybeat one works off the post. The psychedelia one you have to go to where it says ‘View original post’.
Hope you find it and it works for you.

  6. I have not changed my view, Men should be allowed to be Men. Women have become too aggressive, those feminine woman who are still out there have to treasured. We not all want, even at my age, want to see men shaving the hairs off their chests because thats what certain women like. Well there are still women who like to cuddle up to make love to a real man, a man that is not ashamed to show his protective side. For goodness sake there is nothing wrong with being old fashioned, today the young men are more like bloody girls, thank goodness my Sons are not ashamed to keep the hair on their chests.

    1. You’ll be pleased to know that I still have my chest hair Anna. But I think it is more about the gratuitous violence, rape, derogatory attitudes to women, aggressive behaviour, drunkenness and laddish behaviour. That is what some men still think is what being a man is all about. Real men don’t have to abuse women or attack people.

  7. I am delighted to hear you have your chest hair still, its ridiculous for men to shave it off. Let’s be fair Opher all these women jumping on the bandwagon cruising rape or assault, yes I know some men can go too far. For goodness sake when I worked in the Pru I used to get hands up my legs, pinch on the bottom or rubbing up against me or the usual touching “accidentally” the breasts, but you said nothing unless it really went too far, and it did for me on two occasions., and then I made my objections clearly and loudly in public. I highly enjoyed the wolf whistles, now days women complain at that, a man can’t touch them on the shoulder, its gone too far. Of Course, there is no need for a man to be abusive on any occasion. I understand that lots of young girls are under pressure from young men, and the filthy things sexually that gangs force girls to do. Up North for far too long young white girls were being abducted for sex by Pakistani men, local Authorities knew, the Police knew, the Government knew all political parties knew and women’s groups and what did they do NOTHING.

We have had in this Town a week or so ago a woman abducted by four men taken to a house and raped, and the Police well the one in charge of the case is a Woman Officer and her response in public was “well she was drunk”. Absolutely disgusting, that woman regardless whether she was drunk or not will receive no justice.

Try and accept Opher not all women are innocent little victims, these days women at times are their own worst enemy. Those men who behave in such a disgusting way, where did they learn it, learning starts with the parents what example did the mothers or fathers give?

    1. Thanks for that Anna. I think it is very difficult for people these days. Different people respond in different ways and what one finds acceptable another doesn’t. I can only hope that the pendulum doesn’t swing too far and that we end up with a sensible and more open set of ‘rules’. In the past I think that some men misused their power but I know that many women also misused their sexuality too. They certainly weren’t all innocent little victims but some were.
As for all those grotesque men involved in raping young girls – they need locking up for a very long time. I think that girls should be very careful getting drunk but that is no excuse for rape and if a police officer has come out with that she needs to be reprimanded strongly.

  8. She should be reprimanded or sacked but it won’t happen you know that, the Police rule themselves, especially in a place like this. I certainly agree with you on girls getting drunk, they should control their drinking, never let someone they really don’t know buy them a drink, the rape drug is used in drinks. If I had Grandchildren like you, I know I would be worried for their future in the World we now have. Let’s be honest Opher far too many women don’t respect themselves how can you expect men to respect them and then the men think all women are like the others. I hear my Son say how the girls are in this Town when he goes out for a drink or meal with friends, most times he says the girls start the fights that go on. There will always be men who use their power and there will always be women who let them. Very hard I would say bringing up a Family these days.

    1. That is so true. When you see the young kids out around town, drunk and stupid, you despair. But they aren’t all like that. Most of the youngsters grow out of it. Some of those girls are plain daft. They do not have any respect. They egg on the boys to have a fight and seem to love the brutality of it. But – most girls are not like that.

      1. Don’t you agree Opher that a lot has to do with the bringing up of the child, Jonathan tells me how they have 8 year olds and older come into the store and they try to take things or smash things and when confronted come out with the most foul words, and of course nothing can be said to them or done to them. I would not want to start a family these days. It’s all gone mad not just in this Country but the whole World.

      2. I think you are right. Some people shouldn’t be parents. But I know from my school that the majority of kids were absolutely smashing. All the trouble came from a small minority who had terrible backgrounds. The parents are responsible. They need locking up.
