It is the old who are lumbering us with the Nasty Party!!! Get out and vote!!

Just as with Brexit it is the Old Voters who are voting for the Tories and don’t give a hoot about the young, schools, the NHS or social care. It is the young who will pick up the bill!

Grannies and Granddads are dumping their grandchildren in the mess.

According to the Independent:

‘The (Labour) party is 57 points ahead of the Conservatives among voters under 25 years old, according to the poll, compared to 28 points shortly after the snap vote was called in April.

Across all the age groups, the survey for The Sunday Times showed Theresa May’s lead over Labour had fallen to seven points as she re-launched her election campaign.

While only 12 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds said they would vote Conservative, 69 per cent of them would opt to elect Jeremy Corbyn to Downing Street, the poll showed.

Meanwhile, 44 per cent of 25-to 49-year-olds favoured Labour, compared to 34 per cent who would vote Tory. Mr Corbyn’s 10-point lead among this age group was up from eight points in the first days after the election was announced.

Yet only 57 per cent of people in each young age group said they were absolutely certain to vote, compared to 66 per cent of 50 to 64-year-olds and 75 per cent of over 60s.’

Time to make sure everyone gets out to vote. This country can’t stand another five years of austerity and the dismantling of public services!!

The answer to terrorism is not what Theresa May is doing!

It would appear that are terrorists are homegrown. They are radicalised by fanatics on line, among their friends and in their mosques.

In my opinion the problem is complex and requires a series of solutions.

  1. Integrate children into British society and British values of tolerance

2. Wipe out ISIS militarily, and Boko Haram, A Qaeda and similar groups.

3. Shut down internet sites spreading hate.

4. Hunt down the clerics and other purveyors of hatred and lock them up

5. Welcome Muslims and bring them on side. Most Muslims are law-abiding and hate terrorism as much as anyone else. If the trust is there they will report suspicious people to the police.

6. Educate all children to tolerate, respect, and value others.

7. Police the mosques and Madrassas to prevent radical propaganda

8. Shut down the hundreds of illegal schools

The most stupid thing the Tories are doing is introducing more religious schools – creating more segregation and apartness.

The other stupid thing is to cut back on the police so that they haven’t got the means to do the job.

Then there is the effect of making people feel unwelcome. That needs addressing.

What do you think?

Fanatical, brainwashed terrorist scum target kids!!

My heart goes out to the poor parents of the dead and injured little girls who were blasted by the callous, barbaric terrorist bomber. As a parent I am horrified.

Once again, in the name of god, another targeting of the weak and innocent. The perpetrators have no morality and no conscience.

Somewhere a group of indoctrinated, misguided, barbarous imbeciles interpreted a medieval book to somehow believe that their god thought it was a good idea to blow up innocent little girls. This a god of love? This Islam – a religion of peace? No. This was the work of a minority of deluded, brainwashed fools who are being used by powerful masters for their own political ends and to increase their own power.

There is no paradise waiting down the line. You’ve been duped.

Somewhere a group of people planned to build a bomb, fill it with nuts and shrapnel and detonate it among a crowd of little girls. No words can describe the disgust. No god would sanction that other than a psychotic god. They are heartless, cruel and deluded.

The aim of the exercise is to drive a wedge between the British Muslim community and the rest of the British public. They want Tories, UKIP and the BNP to rise up with xenophobic fury and cause friction which drives more Muslims into the hands of fanatics.

That is what we must not let happen!!

What we do need to do is to build trust and work with the Muslim community to hound out the fanatics and lock them away.

What we need to do is reverse the Tory cuts to public services, increase out police spending and anti-terror work and hunt down these psychotic madmen and madwomen. We want rid!!

The terrorist may hate music, dance and culture but they will never defeat the strength of the British people and create the sterile kind of world they dream of.

Fabulous Corbyn Storms Hull!!

The sun shone for Jeremy as he wowed a massive crowd crammed into Zebedee’s Yard in Hull. It was supposed to have a capacity of 3500. There was at least that and more crammed in. They roared in support.

What other politician could attract such a crowd? Nobody!

Theresa May wouldn’t even dare face the public. She’s too scared!

She won’t even join in a TV debate – she’s too scared!

And rightly so! If she showed her face to the angry people of Britain she’d be pelted. If she was to debate with Jeremy she’d be slaughtered.

They were all there – black, white, brown, Muslim, Christian and atheist, female, male, disabled, young and old. They were all unified in one thing – they wanted an end to the lies of the Tories and wanted an honest man to lead the country – some who is fair and cares about people.

The event started with a great poem written by a Hull poet. The crowd listened and cheered. The second speaker was from Scunthorpe and she was brilliant. Then it was John Prescott’s turn. He lambasted Theresa May as ‘wobbly as Jelly’ and exalted the Labour Manifesto as being the best he had ever seen! A return to real Labour roots and policy!! He laid into the Tories dismal record and U-turns – the cuts to public services and austerity while the rich got richer.

The crowd roared.

There are few who could have worked a crowd as well.

When Jeremy appeared the crowd went mad. They listened to what he said. It all made sense.

The message was clear TO BUILD A COUNTRY FOR THE MANY NOT THE FEW.

To make the bankers pay for the mess they caused by taxing them more and to use the money to improve our public services and infrastructure and reverse the mess the Tories were making of them.

The huge crowd responded. He showed all the skills of a leader – was articulate and passionate.

This guy believed in what he said and everybody there was in no doubt that he could deliver. By the time he finished speaking the crowd were roaring. If you could only bottle it.

What a brilliant, life-enhancing meeting. Everyone came away full of spirit. We have to rid ourselves of this appalling government that is taxing the poor to give huge tax cuts to the rich. We have to put in place a government that cares about ordinary people.

Jeremy is not only electable – he is the only hope! Get out there and vote!!

A Brexit Day – how to unite the country!

The country is split. Most people didn’t vote for one reason or another. Half of those who did vote wanted to leave and half wanted to stay in the EU.

We are left with a situation where half the country is angry, fearful and dismayed at the thought of leaving, and half the country feel aggrieved that they feel, rightly or wrongly, that they are being accused of not understanding the situation, being xenophobic or even racist, being gullible and believing the lies, or being stupid which pushes them into a position of vehemently defending their position.

To understand each other and come to some rapprochement it is important that people start to talk and appreciate how the other side are feeling, their situation and reasoning.

There is a real debate here about what is going to happen to the country. I do not hear any of that debate. There does not appear to be any views as to what we all want for our grandchildren. It seems to me that we have a bunch of extremely right-wing Tories who are secretly putting together their own agenda and there is no opposition or openness.

I am a person who voted to remain for a number of reasons and am horrified about what is happening in Britain (and America).

My main concerns are:

The Environment and climate change

Nature and extinction

Human Rights and equality

Workers Rights

An outward looking, friendly, cosmopolitan country.

A thriving economy supporting public services (NHS and Schools, Social Services and the rest of it)

Defence

I would like to discuss how these issues can be addressed in a country that is retreating inside its own boundaries.

Yesterday we had friends round and they are not only staunch remainers but have many family with European connections and have been active with them and their children’s multinational friends. They are horrified by the stories they are hearing about what is happening to their family and other people as a result of Brexit (and we haven’t even started yet).

There are real fears out there. Real fears!!! There is nothing more infuriating when bad things are happening to have people tell you that those fears and experiences are not true – they know because they’ve asked their milkman and they personally haven’t seen any of it so it is all made up.

The fears are real and if we are going to come together we must try and understand each other.

Today I will put out a series of posts provided by Cathy. I think they explain some of the feelings, worries and anger of a remainer.

George Orwell Quotes – a man who saw politics for what it is – deceit, control and betrayal.

George was extremely intelligent, far-seeing and perceptive. His words still ring true.

In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
The lies we are fed by politicians and the media!
If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.
Governments and corporations control and manipulate us.
Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
History is written by the winners.
Political language… is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
We call that spin. They stoke up division and hatred. Make black and white out of grey and get us to vote for war.
War is a way of shattering to pieces… materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable and… too intelligent.
If only all the money spent on nuclear bombs, fighter planes, armies, tanks and war-ships was put into education and music the world would be a better place.
All political thinking for years past has been vitiated in the same way. People can foresee the future only when it coincides with their own wishes, and the most grossly obvious facts can be ignored when they are unwelcome.
I thought this was pertinent to all Trump, Clinton, Brexit and Bremain supporters.
Big Brother is watching you!
In this age of surveillance it has never been truer! But it’s in our own interests – right?

Roy Harper – The interview with Music Week.

Am I British or European?

P1120419 (2)P1120504 (2)

2400 year ago Britain was inhabited by the Celtic tribes who came across from Europe in 300 BC. So the first Britons were European.

The Angles and Saxons came across from Germany, Netherlands and Denmark to displace the Celts.

Then the Romans came across from Italy, the Vikings (mainly in the north) from Norway, Denmark and Sweden and the Normans from France.

Then there were the major mass immigrations – the Huguenots from France and Jews from Russia and Eastern Europe.

The trade links of the British Empire opened up trade routes and there was an influx of people from further afield – Arabs, Indians, Africans, Chinese and hosts of others.

In the 20th century we had further waves of immigration from Jamaica, Pakistan, India, Africa, Turkey, Greece and the Middle East.

The stand out thing about the British is that we are mongrels, full of hybrid vigour. All these people have contributed greatly to our culture. Our language is the best example. It is basically German/Danish but with much French, Italian, Indian, Jewish, Arabic and Dutch imports. This provides the richness of language that enables nuance and an array of subtleties that most other languages do not have. It is this richness that gives us writers like Shakespeare.

To be British is truly to be European in every sense of the word.

Roy Harper – Edinburgh Usher Hall – Photos of soundcheck

These are a few photos from the sound check.  I’ll put up some more as I find time to sort them. Hope you like them.

Roy had a migraine earlier but managed to shrug it off though it left him a bit drained – I don’t think it showed.

p1130998 p1140004

There is a lot of work getting the sound levels and tone right, coordinating the musicians and arrangements, and getting the lighting right. Sound checks are fraught with focussed attention and intensity. Everything is organised to the last detail. A lot goes on. Quite a bit different to the days when Roy would hitch-hike into a small club, take his guitar out of the case and step up to the microphone.

Roy Harper – Edinburgh Usher Hall Review – A Man for all Seasons!

Roy Harperp1140197-2 A Man for all Seasons!

I’d go to the ends of the Earth to catch a Harper concert – well at least the ends of the country! That’s pretty much what I’ve just done – from the Royal Festival Hall in the deep south of the Thames Delta in London to the Usher Hall in Edinburgh – the northern granite fortress of Scotland. (OK – not quite Land’s End to John O’Groats). And what a stunning adventure – out of this world!

I’ve seen Roy perform for nigh on fifty years and I can affirm that at the age of seventy five none of his musical skills or voice has diminished an iota. He is as good as ever. Like a good wine he leaves the brain intoxicated with a fine zest tingling the senses.

In the Spring of his career he was forceful, capricious and furiously blowing this way and that with hurricane fury and torrents of words lashing the brains of all who ventured near. Like a tempest – unyielding, creative and wild.

In his Summer years he burned, scorched ears and laid waste to all he despised with vitriol and skill. His epics had scope, genius and barbed insight unparalleled in the world of music.

But, as we all know, it is in the Autumn that the vine bears fruit and the harvest is brought in. Roy is busy gathering in the fruits of the decades and creating a sumptuous smorgasbord to lay before us.

Over the years Harper concerts have been gatherings of the faithful where we were treated to a sharing of the feast in what had become his front room. But this mature Harper has honed each and every song into a gem of a performance. It’s the same feast but the presentation skills are manifest.

Working with a bunch of supremely talented musicians – the strings and brass under the direction of Fiona Brice, Beth Symmons on double bass and Bill Shanley on guitar and banjo – has harnessed Roy to a greater structure and in so doing has enabled his musical genius to shine. In order to synchronise with such accomplished musicians Roy has had to rein in his idiosyncrasies and focus on delivery. But there is no loss of power for all this – the music is all the greater. The backing has superbly augmented Roy’s compositions to unleash their inherent beauty and strengths.

Neither has this detracted from Roy’s rambling intros, beloved by many and a source of immense frustration to others, but usually shedding insight and setting to the compositions.

It was exactly the same set as at the Royal Festival Hall and so I will not dwell too long on the set save to say that Me and My Woman, Hallucinating Light, Don’t You Grieve, Time is Temporary, 12 Hours of Sunset and When An Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease were so well crafted that the quality was up there with a studio produced sound. They were crafted gems.

That is not to detract from the rest of the set either. Hangman and Hors D’ Oeuvres were full of Roy’s anger and passion.

Three years ago we were witnessing a Harper renaissance. He was finally receiving the plaudits that should always have been there, and his live and studio performances were reaching the heights.

I was concerned that a three year lay-off might have brought an end to this late flourish. I am pleased to report that it hasn’t!

Roy is back! This tour was a triumph! This Harper nut has received another fix. Hopefully it will be sufficient to tide him over to the next outing – the withdrawal symptoms are too great to bear.

Make it soon Roy!

(I’ll put up a load of photos in future posts)
