Hull 2017: What’s On in February

It’s shaping up for a great year!!

Hull – City of Culture – The Fabulous Blade!

How that managed to get such a colossal structure into the centre of Hull through all those narrow streets is beyond me. Well done guys!!

Great idea and brilliantly done!

Siemens is a major development for alternative energy (shame they are no longer bringing their research and development due to Brexit) and will help make Hull a thriving centre of wind technology. Just what we need – a major development of a great area – much needed jobs – and a big financial boost for the region.

Alternative energy is the future – wind, solar and tidal energy is sustainable and non-polluting! Forget your dirty coal, oil and gas!! Hull could become a centre for the whole world! So it was appropriate that the organisers of the year of culture thought up such a brilliant idea. It looks wonderful. It is massive. What a backdrop to the old buildings in the city centre.

Unfortunately it was a bit of a dank January day when we went! But it didn’t spoil it! I loved it.

Hull – The City of Culture!!!  What a night!!!

The only fly in the ointment is the lamentable Hull City Council. There are still road-works and open sites, lots of construction sites!! It all should have been finished in time! They should have pulled out all the stops! This was Hulls big chance to shine and they have let us down again!!

The New Theatre closed!! It is a joke!!

Hull is brilliant! We had a SUPERB display! Why oh why don’t the council get themselves sorted out?

Proud of Hull!!! Hull City of Culture – Light Show Victoria Square. Some photos.

Fabulous!! Great!! Stunning!!

And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here!

The organisers made great use of the public buildings in Victoria Square to give a brilliant Light Show that showed off the best of Hull and brought tears to the eyes.

It featured all the Hull Heroes from Amy Johnson to Dean Windass. The Blitz, fishing and sport all played out to a great music soundtrack with Bowie, Red Guitars and Roland Gift!! Fabulous!!

Proud of Hull!!! – Hull City of Culture Light Show – The Deep!

I went along to Hull yesterday to see the Light Show put on for the Hull City of Culture. The guys had done a brilliant job! They did the city proud!!

Here’s a few photos from the light show at the Pier on the Deep!

It had a great theme of Departures and Arrivals that showed how Hull, through the ages, has been connected to the world. A great proud port!! None of this xenophobic rubbish. It showed the enrichment, commerce and prosperity!

Andy White at Kardomah – Hull

Before we hit our house move I was lucky enough to catch Andy White at Kardomah in Hull. Kardomah is turning into one of Hull’s main venues for good music!

It was one hell of a night! Andy was really on form. He was solo and plugging his massive box-set of brilliance.

One of my favourite songs is Religious Persuasion and I knew we were in for a great evening when he kicked off with it. It’s a song that doesn’t pull punches.

What a great gig. Andy gave it some welly and rocked the joint!

Here’s a few photos from the gig:

ANDY WHITE

Religious Persuasion Lyrics

‘protestant or catholic’
cried a voice from the crowd
‘not you again st peter’
I was thinking aloud
should have packed my bags
headed off for the coast
had my time already come
to meet the heavenly host?
they switched on their halos
adjusted their harps
checked that the blades
on the pearly gates were sharp
I asked them what they meant
about religious bent
they said ‘that’s the test’
I said ‘that’s the test-ah-meant’

they were giving holy orders
I think you’ll find
I was up against persuasion
of the religious kind

it was hailing marys
at the drop of a tract
said the 7 deadly sins
were staying round at my flat
I pondered on the churches
of england and rome
hadn’t paid the rent
for my spiritual home
needed guidance from the leaders
whose names I knew
archbishop…
and john player number two
I quaked in my sackcloth
threw away my joss-stick
burned my koran and said I was agnostic
‘I mean an atheist’ I cried
as they moved in for the kill
the walls tumbled down as they
handed me the bill

they weren’t impressed
with my distinctions
I think you’ll find
that I was up against persuasion
of the religious kind

a lamb to the slaughter
a human sacrifice
I told their spiritual leader
his sceptre looked nice
a hymn book skimmed my ear
but I was only grazed
I dived for cover
as the sawn-off bibles blazed
in the gore I gasped
‘was it something I said?’
then a solid granite altar
hit me on the head
a collection plate plunged into my groin
they marched off discussing
the battle of the boyne

as I expired I was thinking
they’d been rather unkind
but I was up against persuasion
of the religious kind

bleeding and naked
I was somewhat at a loss
the good samaritan was drinking
at the sign of the cross
recalling their question I felt totally alone
as I peered out from underneath
the tablets of stone
in the gutter lay the crushed
remains of a bible
it proclaimed their grievances
were purely tribal
they made me see the light
for that I offer my thanks
I was collared by the dogs
now I’ve joined their ranks

onward christian soldiers
I hope you don’t mind
being afflicted by religion
of the persuasive kind

now if you’re visiting some irish town
the politicians’ heads stuck in the ground
and the only bell ringing has a
graveyard sound

someone’s got to stand up or
nothing’s gonna change
till religion
is rearranged

Fall in Hull 2009

It was a cold, dank night on the Costa del Humber. The wind carried a touch of snow and blew in the Fall. Inside the Welly it was hot with anticipation. What a club! The smell of fresh paint and dust of refurbishment has long ceased to bother the noses of the faithful. The dark scarred walls record the vibrations of many a gig but never a night such as this.

From the moment they hit the stage, following a rather bemusing (and much too long) distorted video projection, the band were in top form hitting powerful rhythms and churning out their driving brand of energy. Mark was imperious as he stalked the stage. The Hull crowd, often accused of being discerning, bounced and raved in one united entity. The small club reverberated to the driving riffs and the band fed off the enthusiasm. Mark roamed and sang, recited, his lyrics over the top commanding the stage and orchestrating events. He adjusted the sound, distorted the theramin and took over the organ seeming to be thoroughly immersed and enjoying himself.

From beginning to end they never lost the groove and the encore was, like the set, just too little. We could have done with another hour or two.

Afterwards, with ringing ears and making involuntary exclamations of ‘White Lightnin’, I staggered off home to reflect on one hell of a night. The wind blowing in from the Pacific regions of the North Sea had become unseasonably warm.

Lets hope we get some hope in the end!
