Linton Kwesi Johnson – Sonny’s Lettah

Racism and police brutality is not the province of any one country. This is Linton’s reggae poem about the abuse of power:

Sonny’s Lettah

From Brixton Prison, Jebb Avenue London S.W. 2 Inglan

Dear mama
Good day
I hope that when these few lines reach you they may
Find you in the best of health

Carnival – Jackson C Frank – Pete Smith.

When we were students Pete and I shared a room in a dingy terrace. It was tiny, freezing, damp, dirty, smelly and probably very dangerous – but we loved in. It was just big enough for two beds. Between the two beds we had a paraffin stove which we kept on all night in an attempt to stop us freezing. We blocked up all the draughts through the French windows with newspaper. Somehow we did not suffocate!

Pete had a heap of old harmoniums stacked at the end of the room and used to make mandoukes, among other things.

Pete used to sit on his bed and play Jackson C Frank numbers. I can picture him now.

He lives in Australia now and just sent this through. Took me straight back!!

Loudon Wainwright – A Hard Day on the Planet

This seems appropriate!! Things are tough all over on Earth!!

Music to keep me SANE during Isolation – Leonard Cohen

I really miss him. It is sad to think that there won’t be any more music or poems coming from the man. I miss his humour and insight.

So I shall have to make do with the wonderful body of work he produced in his lifetime.

Today I’ll be playing Leonard Cohen and I shall laugh and sigh.

The poor stay poor the rich get rich.

Everybody knows the captain lied.

Music to keep me SANE in Isolation – Gang of Four.

I like a bit of bite!! Some strong lyrics that I can identify with. I need an injection of attitude!

Capitalism it fails me now!! I need the Gang of Four!!!

Today I shall chill out to some aggressive truth!!!

Today’s Music to keep me INSANE in Isolation – The Fugs.

Playing the Velvets yesterday made me think of that other band from New York that captured my imagination. While not being musically brilliant their mad anarchy and sense of theatre was always entertaining and thought provoking.

The Fugs were a law unto themselves!! Sexual politics, political politics, madness, poetry, theatre, costume and a clear anti-establishment stance. Protopunks and precursors of the Dead Kennedy’s.

One of my favourites. I shall enjoy playing them today!! Let’s get out there and kill for peace!!

Today’s Music to keep me SANE during Isolation – Velvet Underground

The Velvets were a strange combination of forces – John Cale’s avant garde viola and droning sounds, Lou Reed’s experimental garage guitar, Sterling’s R&B, Nico’s lilting heavily accented voice and Moe’s steady drums, but it worked!

Those first couple of albums were groundbreaking. I remember playing them back in the 60s. They were like an East Coast dose of hard drugs and sexual fetish to counter the Acid Rock of the West Coast.

Straight out of Andy Warhol’s factory as a protopunk extravaganza. I used to play those albums a lot. The range was incredible – from soft and lilting to hard and raw.

So today I’m digging them out and giving them an outing. I might even pull out a Nico album or two!!

Today’s Music to keep me SANE during Isolation – the Eels

Today the sun is shining but I’m feeling a bit jaded still, so I wanted something appropriate to my mood!

I settled for the Eels!!

a friend of mine called Dave introduced me to the Eels many moons ago. It was in the days of Novocaine for the Soul. That pretty much sums up how I feel about this lousy destructive, greed-ridden society we’ve constructed.

So today I will be blasting out a bit of Eels!!

Todays Music to keep me SANE in Isolation – The Meters

The Meters came out of New Orleans with such a tight Funk sound it curls your toes. When they get into a groove, like on Cissy Strut, they set your whole body jigging.

Today I will be playing the Meters loud and proud.

Today’s Music to keep me SANE in Isolation – Love

A fabulous band from Los Angeles. A darling of the Underground.

They produced three brilliant albums before heroin rather messed up their lives.

I was fortunate to see the later incarnation live. Arthur Lee had harnessed a young band and they were brilliant – every bit as good as the original. Johnny Echols played with them on one occasion.

Meeting Arthur was like meeting a legend!

Then, just when the band was pulling in huge crowds, he gets ill and dies. Life is so unfair.

But today I will be playing my three favourite Love albums and wallowing in the music!
