Some Australian Kookaburras.

Kookaburras are amazing. They are so bold, so loud and so amazingly brash!

A couple of Koalas from Newcastle – photos

Koalas used to be really common but like a number of Australian wildlife they are getting scarce. We had to hunt like crazy to find one in the wild. We only ever saw one in its native habitat.

I guess that zoos will soon be the only places we’ll find many of the animals we have come to love.

Egypt – the use of animals in farmwork.

It is a bit like going back in time to see fields being ploughed by animals and wheat scythed by hand.

Everywhere you look there were animals being used to pull carts or for transporting people.

Jordan – Petra – and the animals.

It is an experience to travel back into cultures where animals are still used as the beasts of burden. At the wonderful city of Petra in Jordan there are all manner of animals used. Tourists can ride down to the place in a horse and trap, on a donkey or a camel.

In the West we have become used to these tasks being carried out by vehicles. I am not sure that I am used to seeing animals used in this way. I did not like it. The donkeys were carrying heavy people and seemed too small for the load and the horses were raced with their hooves slipping on the rock. Only the camels seemed large enough to take the strain easily.

We walked. But then it might just have been my sensibilities.

Sri Lanka – Temple Elephants and Monkeys.

Animals are often used to gain money from tourists. This monkey was tied up in a house near one of the temples in Colombo.

This young elephant was kept chained up in a compound at the Buddhist Temple. They are used in various ceremonies but spend their life in a little compound.

It seemed to have a close relationship with its handler but was displaying many symptoms of frustration, swaying back and forth. It’s limited life and lack of ability to move around or have a social relationship with other elephants seemed to be taking its toll.

The big debate is how much of an abuse is this? Are the animals being abused? Are they being well cared for?

Snake Charming in Sri Lanka

Snakes, monkeys and other wild animals are used to get money off tourists. Many of the animals are abused. The monkeys are tied up. Often the snakes have their fangs pulled out or their mouth sewn up.

I didn’t see any evidence of that in Sri Lanka but it’s hard to tell. The snakes looked to be well cared for.

This King Cobra is a very dangerous animal. It opens its hood when it feels threatened.

This python looked to be in good condition and well looked after.

Please help save the Elephants! They are being slaughtered! Please sign the petition!

Every day dozens of elephants are killed for the ivory from their tusks. [1] Unless we stop poaching for the ivory trade, elephants could be extinct within a few years. [2]

Shockingly, at the moment the UK is the largest exporter of carved ivory in the world. [3] But right now we’ve got an opportunity to stop that. The government is considering a ban, and this month they’re holding a consultation to find out what the public think. [4] They could then bring in a ban on trading ivory…OR they could do nothing.

Chris, that’s where you come in. If tens of thousands of us sign a petition, we can prove that there’s overwhelming public support for an ivory trade ban to help save elephants. Please will you sign today?

We all like to think of the UK as a country that does its bit to protect wildlife. So it’s shocking that it’s still legal to trade ivory here. [5] It means the UK fuels global demand for ivory. That means poachers know they can make money from killing more elephants. It’s great our government is now looking at a ban. If we can persuade them to introduce it, we’ll help stop elephants being killed – and set a much better example to other countries.

The government minister in charge of this decision is Michael Gove. This isn’t the first time 38 Degrees-ers have come together to ask him to do the right thing. Just last month, after a huge campaign, we convinced Michael Gove to support a ban on bee-killing pesticides. [6] More than 370,000 of us took action to protect bees – and it worked.

The government consultation closes in less than two weeks. So, Chris, will you sign the petition right now? It only takes 30 seconds.

Thanks for being involved,

The mindless slaughter of elephants and other big game. Help prevent it.

It seems that far too many rich people think they are big-time game hunters like some present-day Ernest Hemingway. It’s time we put a stop to it. These cowards are murdering beautiful animals for trophies!

Trophy hunting is the hunting of wild animals for fun. The trophy is the animal or part of the animal kept as a souvenir, and usually displayed to show off the success of the hunt. Sometimes hunts can cause horrific injuries that can lead to the animals suffering prolonged deaths.

Earlier this month conservationists and those fighting to save the African elephant received shocking news. The Trump administration announced they might overturn critical protections for the African elephant by allowing imports of hunting trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia. But thanks to an outpouring of outrage and nearly a million signatures on a Change.org petition started by animal rights advocate Kathleen, this policy change is temporarily on hold for “review.”

We need your help to ensure those trying to stop animal abuse and injustice like Kathleen have a loud voice.

Kathleen’s campaign hasn’t won yet so she still needs support. And now there’s a movement building on Change.org to end trophy hunting all over the world. Millions of signatures are putting public pressure on governments to change the law to protect animals.
