Frank Zappa – It can’t happen here!

Good old Frank he always summed things up succinctly!

Freak out was one of those great albums that came out in 1966. A blast of weirdness. There is nobody quite like Frank.  How do you categorise music like this? This blew minds!

The song was a warning. It was highlighting the fact that a new culture was being born. The young were out of control and doing something else – they were not part of the establishment any more. They did not buy into the American Dream.

Unfortunately the ‘new culture’ became a fashion.

It did happen. Then it didn’t.

I thought the song was appropriate right now because a different ‘It can’t Happen Here’ is happening – a lot more scary.

It Can’t Happen Here

Frank Zappa

It can’t happen here
It can’t happen here
I’m telling you, my dear
That it can’t happen here
Because I been checkin’ it out, baby
I checked it out a couple a times, hmmmmmmmm

And I’m telling you
It can’t happen here
Oh darling, it’s important that you believe me
(bop bop bop bop)
That it can’t happen here

Who could imagine that they would freak out somewhere in kansas…
Kansas kansas tototototodo
Kansas kansas tototototodo
Kansas kansas
Who could imagine that they would freak out in minnesota…
Mimimimimimimi minnesota, minnesota, minnesota
Who could imagine…

Who could imagine
That they would freak out in washington, d.c.
D.c. d.c. d.c. d.c. d.c.
It can’t happen here
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
It can’t happen here
It can’t happen here
Everybody’s safe and it can’t happen here
No freaks for us
It can’t happen here
Everybody’s clean and it can’t happen here
No, no, it won’t happen here
I’m telling you it can’t
It won’t happen here
(bop bop didi bop didi bop bop bop)
Plastic folks, you know
It won’t happen here
You’re safe, mama
You’re safe, baby
You just cook a tv dinner
And you make it
(bop bop bop)
No no no no
Oh, we’re gonna get a tv dinner and cook it up
Go get a tv dinner and cook it up
Cook it up
Oh, and it won’t happen here
(no no no no no no no no no no no
Man you guys are really safe
Everything’s cool).
Who could imagine
Who could imagine
That they would freak out in the suburbs
I remember (tu-tu)
I remember (tu-tu)
I remember (tu-tu)
They had a swimming pool
I remember (tu-tu)
I remember (tu-tu)
They had a swimming pool
I remember (tu-tu)
I remember (tu-tu)
They had a swimming pool.

And they thought it couldn’t happen here
(duh duh duh duh duh)
They knew it couldn’t happen here
They were so sure it couldn’t happen here
But…

Suzie…
Yes yes yes–i’ve always felt that
Yes I agree man, it really makes it…yeah…
It’s a real thing, man
And it really makes it
(makes it)

Suzie, you just got to town,
And we’ve been, we’ve been very interested
In your development,
Since you first took the shots.
Forget it!
Hmmmmmmmmm
(it can’t happen here)
(can’t happen here)
(can’t happen here)

Quote 11 – Frank Zappa – A voice of intelligence and sanity.

 IMG_2128
‘Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.’
‘I never set out to be weird. It was always other people who called me weird.’
‘There are more love songs than anything else. If songs could make you do something we’d all love one another.’
Frank was a one off genius.
I could fill a whole blog on his perceptive sayings.
He wasn’t always right but he had an original view right from the beginning.
You can’t categorise him

I nominate the following to take up the challenge of providing up to three quotes a day for three days:Nadine – who wants to start a revolution

Frank Zappa – Cosmik Debris – lyrics about the stupidity of superstition.

frank zappa

Frank Zappa was a genius. He poked fun at the religious right, the establishment and American society. He also ridiculed ‘Flower Power’ and the sixties underground.

He thought everything was phoney.

He was probably right. Most of what humans as a society do is farcical, hypocritical, violent and thoughtless. For most of the soldiers fighting wars there was no personal animosity towards their enemy apart from what was stoked up by the politicians and media followed by the trauma of seeing their friends killed and maimed.

Most people, on an individual level, are friendly and pleasant. It is only collectively that they turn nasty.

Religion has always been used for power and wealth. The mystery man is typical of the way some people exploit others. The TV evangelists are a typical example – fleecing the population with their smooth talking.

This song is both hilarious and thought provoking.

Cosmik Debris

The mystery man came over
And he said “I’m outta sight!”
He said for a nominal service charge
I could reach nirvana tonight
If I was ready, willing and able
To pay him his regular fee
He would drop all the rest of
His pressing affairs and devote
His attention to me

But I said “Look here brother
who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Look here brother, don’t waste your time on me”

The mystery man got nervous
And he fidget around a bit
He reached in the pocket of his mystery robe
And he whipped out a shaving kit
Now I thought it was a razor
And a can of foaming goo
But he told me right then when the top popped open
There was nothin’ his box won’t do
With the oil of Aphrodite, and the dust of the Grand Wazoo
He said “You might not believe this, little fella
But it’ll cure your asthma too”

And I said “Look here brother
Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now what kind of a guru are you, anyway?
Look here brother, don’t waste your time on me”
*(Don’t waste your time)*

“I’ve got troubles of my own”, I said
“And you can’t help me out
So, take your meditations and your preparations
And ram it up your snout!”
“But I got the crystal ball”, he said
And held it to the ligh
So I snatched it, all away from him
And I showed him how to do it right

I wrapped a newspaper ’round my head
So I looked like I was deep
I said some mumbo-jumbo, then
I told him he was going to sleep
I robbed his rings and pocketwatch
And everything else I found
I had that sucker hypnotized
He couldn’t even make a sound
I proceeded to tell him his future, then
As long as he was hanging around
I said “The price of meat has just gone up
And your old lady has just gone down!”

And I said “Look here brother-who you
Jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?
Don’t you know, you could make more money as a butcher?
So, don’t waste your time on me”
Don’t waste it, don’t waste your time on me

‘What’s the Ugliest Part of Your Body?’ Frank Zappa lyrics and video

frank-zappa-120917

It seems to me that Humans are the most vicious creatures on the planet, the most hypocritical and untrustworthy. We are dangerous.

Frank is great at taking something and twisting it round, injecting humour, satire and hitting you between the eyes.

His lyrics are very political, social and never mundane. He makes you laugh and cry.

This is almost doo-wop. What a genius.

What’s the Ugliest Part of Your Body?

What’s the ugliest
Part of your body?
What’s the ugliest
Part of your body?
Some say your nose
Some say your toes
(I think it’s your mind)
But I think it’s YOUR MIND
(Your mind)
I think it’s your mind, woo woo

ALL YOUR CHILDREN ARE POOR
UNFORTUNATE VICTIMS OF
SYSTEMS BEYOND THEIR CONTROL
A PLAGUE UPON YOUR IGNORANCE & THE GRAY
DESPAIR OF YOUR UGLY LIFE

Where did Annie go
When she went to town?
Who are all those creeps
That she brings around?

ALL YOUR CHILDREN ARE POOR
UNFORTUNATE VICTIMS OF LIES YOU BELIEVE
A PLAGUE UPON YOUR IGNORANCE THAT KEEPS
THE YOUNG FROM THE TRUTH THEY DESERVE . . .
