Education – Are the Tories finally coming to their senses?

After a decade of driving education back to the dark ages of the 1950s is there the glimmer of some awakening taking place?

Gove started the stupid drive to a richer knowledge-based curriculum. He tightened up the GCSE with more memory testing knowledge. Took out the pupil assessment components and then brought in the English Baccalaureate which signalled the death of the arts and humanities subjects. Suddenly Music, Art, Dance, Geography and History were second-rate subjects of little value and squeezed out of the curriculum.

So the schools taught to the exam to gain the results – not because this was good for students but this was good for stats – and school survival and funding depended on stats. If they did not get high results then they would get inspected and a bad Ofsted result meant parent flight a loss of budget and teacher redundancies. It was fraught.

So the students were sacrificed on the whims of necessity.

Now they are waking up to the fact that the modern world does not require knowledge. Knowledge is there at the click of a phone. What is required is teamwork, lateral thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, caring and empathy, respect and tolerance. All those things that Gove so stupidly threw out.

In this autobiographical account of his life as Head Teacher of Beverley Grammar School, Chris takes us through many of the failings of the post-war education system to the much superior, more flexible teaching of the twenty-first century. Along the way, he enthuses about rock music, leadership vs management, and – particularly – the kids. If you can make every lesson fun, every child feel cared for, and every staff member nurtured, attendance and results will pretty much look after themselves. You can pass every Ofsted inspection with flying colours, and your school can become best in class (no pun intended).I was at college with Chris, and it didn’t seem to me then that he was destined to be a head teacher of a secondary school – a music critic, more like. He has done education a great service by showing you can be a rebel and get results too. I hadn’t expected to enjoy this book as much as I did; it has extraordinary energy and a lust for achievement. Every teacher should read it! 8/10 (October 2014)

If you have any interest in the education of your child this book is essential reading. Having studied and worked in education myself I find Mr Goodwins insights and experiences very thought provoking. It deserves a place on the shelves of every educational establishment and needless to say a few people at the ministries and especially the minister for education should read this and maybe, just maybe, we could move forward and improve the educational standards of our children where they have been slipping on a global level.
Mr Goodwin shows, his Ofsted scores prove the point, that civility and empathy rather than antiquated regimented regimes can be extremely effective.

As an retired teacher and Head of Department I found this book a joy to read. It is many things – personal biography, passionate polemic, practical handbook, education history, inspirational text, you name it – woven together in a natural, organic way which really gives you the feel of school life. The author knows whereof he speaks and in friendly fashion takes you, the reader, by the hand on a headlong and often exciting journey through the maze of modern education. His vision is clear and compelling, he knows what works and what doesn’t, he wants you to share his profound sense of the human potential which we can unlock if only we get our schools right. He articulates a philosophy which puts the whole child at its centre and explores the relationships underlying the magic of educational development. The book is written in a direct, heartfelt, jargon-free style and is packed with amusing anecdotes which illuminate his principles, unlike many dry books on the subject. Passionate and humorous and unafraid of controversy, it certainly gets you thinking. I found it a real page-turner and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in good education, whether outside or inside the teaching profession. For anyone connected with school management, in any capacity, it is essential reading. A unique and valuable voice.

An excellent and informative book of Mr Goodwin’s time at the Beverley Grammar School. As a former pupil, it is hard to believe what was going on behind the scenes, however he kept it together and carried on securing the school an outstanding rating from Ofsted in both 2008 and 2010.

EU Power Efficiency Laws prove effective!!

Great news for the environment!

Laws concerning the efficiency of electrical appliances initiated by the EU have succeeded in cutting our electricity bills by 25%.

EU Legislation has caused the manufacturers of electrical appliances to become more efficient. Our fridges, hoovers, ovens, kettles and other appliances now use much less energy to do the same job. This has not only saved us money on our bills but has reduced the need to burn fossil fuels to make our electricity which is great for the environment. When coupled with the introduction of LED lights this has reduced our electricity use by a quarter. Great stuff!!

At a time when over a third of our electricity is produced by alternative, non-polluting, renewable energy sources, this is brilliant.

The future of our planet does not mean we have to live like hermits in austere houses. It just means that we have to become much more efficient with our energy use (and conservation) and to produce it with non-polluting sources. It is possible!

So well done!!

Why do we allow our children to be brainwashed in religious schools?

It is a simple enough question – what business do religions have in schools?

Education should be mind expanding – not a process of indoctrination.

I would keep all religion well away from children.

It is particularly worrying to see these Madrassas and Jewish Schools thumping religion into young minds. I find it utterly reprehensible.

Why do we allow it?

Private Schools – Shouldn’t we ban them?

At the moment the elite take their kids to be educated in Private schools which are not subject to the same National Curriculum or regime of Ofsted inspections.

They have nice plush buildings, fancy equipment, small class sizes and personal tuition.

These Private Schools cream off a lot of the brightest students. They provide a great advantage and give better opportunities for the students of those who can afford to pay.

I think they should be done away with.

I say this for two reasons:

Firstly I do not consider it fair for the wealthy elite to be able to buy privilege for their offspring. I believe in fairness and a level playing field.

Secondly I do not believe that we will ever get proper funding for our schools or a decent curriculum while this elite do not have to put their kids into the system.

All children deserve to have a first-class education with excellent teachers, good equipment, in decent buildings and with a curriculum that is a lot more than just regurgitating facts for examinations.

The Tories have made State education into a sausage factory.

What A Good Education System Should Be Like!!

Putting together a good education system isn’t too hard to do.

Step 1 – Fund it properly.

Step 2 – Pay Teachers well. 

You only get brilliant teachers by attracting in the best. Our kids are the future. They deserve the best. If you want to attract in the best, brightest graduates you have to have a well-paid career with opportunities for advancement.

Step 3 – Provide Support Staff and Time

Teachers need time to prepare materials and lessons. They need time to carry out all the administration and marking.

Ste 4 – Provide good facilities

If you haven’t got the equipment you can’t do as interesting work.

Step 5 – Provide excellent buildings

The design of a classroom so that it is ergonomically designed for learning is essential.

Step 6 – Create a welcoming, friendly and inclusive ethos

All students should feel welcome, valued and important.

Step 7 – Have a wide-ranging Curriculum

Students should experience as wide a range as possible. The curriculum should be geared to providing knowledge and experience in a range of Arts and Sciences.

Step 8 – Make sure each Syllabus is interesting

Education should be fun, illuminating and have room for creativity, discussion, skill development, teamwork, Groupwork, active learning, experimentation, teamwork and independent learning.

Step 9 – Ensure Teaching is Active and Varied

In order to engage students one has to involve all the senses and learning styles.

Step 10 – Ensure that Teachers are observed regularly assessed and helped to develop

Teaching is a very difficult set of skills and it is dynamic. A teacher never stops learning and developing. They should be assisted to develop.

Step 11 – Provide Diagnostic Testing of students as regularly as possible

Diagnostic testing enables students who are struggling to be identified and support brought in to assist them to make progress.

Step 12 – Keep class sizes down 

A class should be of large enough size to generate a group dynamic but small enough to enable personal attention. Twenty five is a good class size for most things.

Step 13 – Have a supportive hierarchy

There should be structures and support in the school to deal with problems – especially student behaviour.

Step 14 – Manage change

Too little change and a school stagnates. Too much change and stress levels undermine everything that goes on.

Teaching has come a long way from chalk and talk and is so much more than feeding in facts for examinations. It is about expanding student minds, getting them to think, reason and question, providing skills, encouraging creativity and turning them on.

When I was young, schools were mindless exam factories. Teachers were boring authoritarians. Classrooms were moribund.

Now classrooms can be fun places of great activity and interaction where lively minds are encouraged to grow.

That’s real education. It’s not cheap and it’s not easy.

Department for Education: Stop distorting education funding stats

The Government has been called out for making misleading claims about education funding.

Again.

The Department for Education has made potentially misleading claims that the Government is spending record amounts on school funding and the UK was the “third highest spender on education in the world”.

But this figure includes money spent by parents on private school fees and by students on university tuition fees.

The claim has faced criticism from headteachers who told the BBC it is shocking that the Department for Education would include billions spent on university tuition fees to make this claim.

Now the head of the UK Statistics Authority, Sir David Norgrove, has written to the Department to raise “serious concerns about the Department for Education’s presentation and use of statistics”.

This is the fifth time in the last twelve months that the Statistics Authority has written to the department critiquing how they use statistics, according to Full Fact.

At a time of fake news, imposter news sites and referendum lies, trust in politics and politicians is already at rock bottom.

Restoring trust and integrity in democracy is a core value of More United.

That’s why we are asking for the Secretary of State for Education to:

  1. Stop the distortion of education funding statistics
  2. Publish a transparent breakdown of the calculations behind the claims
  3. Commit to uphold the principles and practices defined in the statutory code of practice for statistics

Headteachers marched on Downing Street protesting the swingeing education cuts that are decimating our schools. Teachers are leaving in droves, recruitment is down, their are teacher shortages, support staff are being laid off, class sizes are soaring, teachers’ pay has been slashed, teachers’ pensions have been slashed, school budgets have been slashed!!

Schools are in crisis! The unprecedented march on Downing Street was a spontaneous protest born of desperation.

The glib, lying response from Gibb was that there wasn’t a problem as more money was being spent on Education that ever before and that we were rated third in the whole OECD on spending on  education.

Those figures are an outright lie!! They have included all the figures for Private Education and the money students are paying for their University Fees to get that figure. What the hell has that got to do with the amount going to our schools??? NOTHING!!!!

The spending per student is down 8%.

The spending per 6th Former is down 20%

Early years in teaching and William Burroughs and censorship

When I went into teaching I was determined to approach it in a different manner to the experience that I had imposed upon me in schools. A lot of my teachers were tyrants and I hated them. I refused to have the distant hierarchy of teacher and pupil. I insisted the students called me by my first name. For me teaching was a privilege. I was not there to force-feed reluctant kids with turgid facts; I was there to enlighten and expand minds, to promote thinking, questioning and discovery and turn on kids to the awe and wonder of the universe.
It did not quite work that way.
The world was not ready for me. The teaching staff thought I was a rebellious nutter and the kids thought I was being weak and played up.
Over my first year or two I had to adjust to find the balance. It was a lesson in life. People liked order and to be told what to do. The kids preferred a strict vicious teacher to a weak one. They felt safer. They knew where they were. That’s why we elect psychopaths and sociopaths; they are strong, clear and black and white. You know where you stand with fascism.
I found a middle way.
At lunch-time I shunned the staff table and sat with the kids. I ran clubs, played sport and got to know them.
I believed teaching was not about power but more about relationship. That learning was not about knowledge so much as the skills and qualities necessary to experience life. I still do.
The students found me interesting and we developed good relationships. They asked me to contribute to a student magazine. I wrote a piece for them. The Senior Team thought it was not appropriate and banned it. The students published the magazine with a space where my story should have been with ‘CENSORED’ written over the pages.
Great stuff.
One of the brightest of the young rebels, a certain Stephen Ellis, won a prize for speech day. That meant that he received a sum of money towards a book of his choice. He came along to me and asked my advice as to what book might be a good one to purchase.
Without too much thought I said that probably something by Kerouac, Ginsberg or Burroughs might be good. He bought a William Burroughs.
The day before Speech day, when the prizes were to be distributed, the lads took their books in. The Religious Education teacher went apoplectic when he saw the William Burroughs book. He took it home to check.
The next day he brought it back. He had painstakingly cut out all the offensive bits. Now anyone who is familiar with Burroughs will know that he is renowned for his straight talking offensiveness. The book was a colander of holes. There were as many holes as words.
I thought all those cut out bits were right up William Burroughs street. He was famous for using the cut-up technique. That would have been something – to make a new book out of a rearranging of all the offensive bits!
Stephen was marched off to the Headteacher to explain why he had chosen such an extreme book. I thought my short career might be on the line. Stephen did not mention me. He feigned innocence. He seemed delighted at what had happened. All this fuss was exciting. It was all a big game.
I think he went on to become a solicitor. I hope he still has that book.
