Brexit has proved to be the disaster we predicted.
It has certainly shaken my faith in democracy. We had a decision made by the uninformed, easily led, xenophobes, racists and the most stupid. It mirrors the support and election of Trump.
Social media, led by those with clearly vested interests (people like Farage, Johnson and Rees-Mogg who all made a killing) ran a campaign based on fear, division and the undermining of experts, that successfully divided the country, empowered the most unpleasant factions, cost us a fortune and has completely broken the country.
This was the same template created by Trump and the far-right populist MAGA movement.
They galvanise the uneducated and deprived and somehow convince them that a billionaire living in a lavish, gaudy mansion with gold toilets cares about them. They still cannot see this grifter is simply making money – $5 billion so far – while employing his extended family in a business that rivals the mafia.
Likewise in the UK, the same people from the same social strata have been convinced to put their faith in a merchant banker multimillionaire who is busily lining his own pockets while drumming up scare stories, racism and xenophobia for his own ends.

Osama Bin Laden wanted to destabilise the West. That’s precisely what he has done.
He unleashed a wave of Jihadist terrorism. He flew planes into the twin towers and planted devastating bombs in London.
That sparked two senseless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, empowered Iran and destabilised the entire region. We then saw ISIS and Boko Haram and more Islamic mayhem. Syria, Sudan and Libya went into civil war.
This all sparked waves of mass immigration.
The fear of Muslims and massive immigration fuelled nationalistic fervour and paved the way for simplistic populist morons to seize an opportunity.
In Britain we ended up with the incompetent muppet Johnson getting elected. Then together with Farage, Tice, Gove and Cummings they broke up the EU and engineered a disastrous Brexit.
In the USA it paved the way for ultra-nationalistic Tea Party nutters to morph into MAGA under the lunacy of a scheming self-serving Trump (presently lining his pockets with billions).
We still have mass immigration.
The EU is splintered resulting in Putin seizing his opportunity.
Britain is broken with Brexit draining our economy.
The USA is in the hands of a narcissistic moron who sides with the enemies of the West and ditches allies.
Putin seized the opportunity to invade Ukraine because of the state the EU and USA were in.
Netanyahu got the go-ahead from Trump for genocide in Gaza.
Right-wing racists are now empowered and are setting policies here and in the USA.
The West is divided, impoverished and in chaos.
Osama Bin Laden achieved everything he set out to do! He won hands down!
Should 16-year-olds have the vote??
My internet mate John Peachey sent me this excellent First Dog cartoon. As always it had a lot of thought-provoking truths.
At sixteen we can make lots of life-changing decisions:
a. We can join the army and go and get ourselves killed.
b. We can get married and have babies (and what can be more important than being responsible for a baby?)
c. You can drop out of education go to work and start following the wrong career that’ll mess up your whole life.
d. You can drive a motorbike and become a menace to yourself and others.
e. You can make legal decisions, open bank accounts and sign contracts that could end up bankrupting you.
Of course, you can’t drive a car, go to a pub or buy cigs – strange anomalies.
As a biologist I am aware of crucial brain development. A human brain does not become fully adult until around the age of twenty-five. Does that mean we should not make any major decisions until then?
I’ve known many twelve and thirteen-year-olds who seemed immensely capable, intelligent, perceptive and compassionate. I’ve known many thirty, forty, fifty and sixty-year-olds who are immensely stupid, uninformed, selfish and inconsiderate who are completely incapable of making an intelligent decision and never will be.
In the course of my teaching career I’ve had reams of fantastic debates with students ranging from twelve to eighteen. We covered a wide range of topics – politics, environment, abortion, sex, contraception and war. I found them well able to argue rationally and usually very well informed, interested and idealistic.
My experiences have made me really think about my commitment to democracy. Do we really want our futures decided by the majority? Half the population have an IQ below 100. Many people are manipulated by conspiracy junk on the internet or propaganda from right-wing media. Most of the population don’t read, think or involve themselves with anything. In my experience we’ve become largely a nation of mindless sheep controlled by multimillionaires through populist nincompoops like Farage, Tice and Trump. Is that democracy? The stupidity of Brexit and hysteria around immigration (exploited by the media and every populist politician) have shaken my faith in democracy.
All told, I’d be happier with a system decided by enthusiastic, idealistic sixteen-year-olds. Mind you, half of them are stupid and most of them get their views from the internet!
