I wrote this in response to Trump and Farage’s scapegoating of immigrants. I believe they are jumping on a populist theme, stirring up fear, exploiting xenophobia and racism and drumming up a hollow patriotism.

I despise them.

We need immigrants. We ALL stem from immigrants. In the past our ancestors roamed and sought new havens.

No. They are not all rapists, murderers and gang thugs. They pick our crops. They treat us when we are sick, tend to our wounds, operate on our cancers and cure our diseases. They unblock our toilets, care for our elderly and cook our food. They do the work we can’t or don’t want to do. They have families to support and ambitions to address. They are fleeing war, torture, repression and starvation.They seek a better future for themselves and families.  They want to live. They are just like us.

As I see the flag-waving thugs outside the hotels I despair. Where is our empathy? Where is our compassion? Where is the spirit that makes the British special?

There is too much immigration. That may well be true.

They are not integrating. That may be true.

Some of them are undesirable. That may be true.

The answers to these problems are not callous thuggery. It’s complex.

These people did not start the wars. They did not cause the global warming. They are not responsible for the gross inequality that causes mass poverty and starvation.

They are victims. They are people just like us. We breathe the same air. Our bodies feel. We share similar dreams.

Tax is optional for the wealthy. They use various schemes to shove their money off-shore and avoid paying tax.

Trump has avoided paying tax at all most years!

If the wealthy paid their taxes there would be more than enough for schools, NHS, councils, youth services, libraries, potholes and everything else.

The wealthy scapegoat immigrants and scroungers but the real problem is them!

They even have the nerve to cut welfare in order to get tax cuts on the stuff they do declare!!

They hold us all to ransom. If a government threatens to close the loopholes and tax them fairly they use their wealth and control of the media to whistle up a tornado of lies, fear and outrage. They then threaten to withhold their money to destroy the economy or take it elsewhere.

Until we have a global application of fair tax the wealthy will continue to screw us!

So this time the modern-day Goebbels (Elon Musk) had social media to target his hate and divide!

While Trump and the GOP rob the treasury women and children are being rounded up without any due process, concentration camps are set up. But that’s OK. They’re illegal. Besides, they have brown skin. They shouldn’t be here. They don’t feel pain. They are subhuman. They deserve it. They are all gang members, rapists and drug pushers.

It’s Arlo Guthrie and Hoyt Axton doing this Woody Guthrie.

He wrote this in 1948 in response to another wave of populist hatred. The media was victimising immigrants and migrant workers.

The workers were brought in from Mexico to work in the fields for a pittance. They were desperate and worked hard. When they were no longer needed they were shipped back and dumped.

A plane crash killed 28 farm workers being shipped back to Mexico. The media reported that they were JUST deportees. Woody thought they were human beings worthy of being named. He wrote those song to give them the dignity they deserved. They were never just anything.

Today we find unsavoury politicians scapegoating immigrants without looking at their plight or solutions to the problem.

Benefit fraud: £1.6bn per year
*Unclaimed benefits: £17bn per year*
**Tax avoidance: £122bn per year**

Forget benefit fraud – the poor are not the problem.

Forget immigrants – they are not the problem.

If we could only get the wealthy to pay their fair share we’d have more than enough!!

We need to close the tax avoidance schemes and plug the loopholes. And if the exploiting, greedy rich don’t lijke it they can bugger off!! They are not paying their share anyway!!

The Benefits of Immigration

One thing is quite clear: we are all the offspring of immigrants. At one time or another, our ancestors gave up everything to move here. Britain is a mongrel nation. There are numerous nationalities present in our genetic stock – historically German, Norse, French, Italian and Spanish make up the bulk of our genes. Later we include African, Chinese, Indian and others, as the trade routes grew. There is no such thing as a pure Anglo-Saxon breed (and, in my opinion, we’re all the better for that!).

Immigration has enriched our genes (hybrids are sturdier than pure breds) and our culture in so many ways:

  1. Language. The English language is so expressive because we have enriched it with words from so many other cultures – from pyjamas, bungalows and anoraks to canoes, art, beef, café and liberty – all purloined along with thousands more.
  2. Food – where would we be without currys, pizzas, spaghetti, beefburgers and sushi?
  3. Clothes and fashion – colours, costumes and frills – pyjamas, robes, fashions, colours, adornments to anoraks and protective gear.
  4. Art – art has found its way into all corners of our experience – particularly cubism and surrealism.
  5. Music – imagine life without Blues, Reggae, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Gospel, R&B, Jazz, Ragas, and all those African and world rhythms.
  6. Culture – the impact on the old stiff upper lip culture is immense! We’ve lightened up! We even dance, sing and go crazy!!
  7. Our economy – we need the workers!
  8. Our carers, NHS, catering, hospitality and agriculture – all crying out for immigrants!

To be British is now black, brown, yellow and white! We’re richer, wiser, more expressive, stronger, full of flavours with an enhanced life experience. All due to immigration!!

The only thing about immigration is to find the balance. We need it but not too much or too little! Getting it right, with the right integration, is an art!
