taipei 1 028

A big thank you to all my many followers. I have now been blogging for two years!! (It feels much longer!). I am so glad you find my work interesting, entertaining and thought provoking.

I have somewhere in the region of 6,600 followers – though most of them seem remarkably quiet. They span nearly every country in the world – over 160!

I still get a buzz to find I have followers in Nepal, Congo, Peru, China and Iran, as well as many others. Thank you all for following and being so loyal.

Thank you to all those who regularly comment and contribute. You make it special.

And thank you for all the thousands of likes – you give me a boost.

I know I upset you from time to time because I am outspoken and opinionated – but that is why I blog. Sorry. But if you disagree please jump in and say so. I welcome debate and opinion and do not censor anything.

I’m planning big changes ahead.  We’ll see how that pans out.

Thanks for looking at my books:

All the best – Opher

An open letter to America

P1080301P1050661P1050689P1050690P1050693

America is a land of inequality. It worships money. It creates a system of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ based on many criteria – race being the most obvious.
The ‘haves’ have create a system that will always give them the advantage – through neighbourhood, education , attitude, arrogance and sheer purchasing power. That is exemplified by Donald Trump. Nobody earns a million dollars, let alone a few billion, they get that money through exploiting others.
Fair pay is about what is a fair hourly rate for what a person puts in. To earn thousands or more for an hours work is obscene. But we live in an age where sports-people, movie stars and bankers all believe that they are worth the millions they get paid. They are manifestly not.
There is a bubble. America (and a number of other countries) lives in a bubble.
The rest of the world (most of humanity) is living in abject poverty and filth, starvation and war, largely as a result of the inequality perpetuated by a system that feels that it alright for big business to make billions of dollars out of starving, desperate people; that it is alright to rape the planet for profit.
I personally do not think that is right.
I would put as a priority the protection of nature and halt the slaughter of wild-life.
I would want a fairer world without grotesque inequality.
I want the human population reducing by half.
I want a system that is fair and does not generate poverty, starvation, war and religious fundamentalism.
I suppose, in the eyes of many Americans, that makes me a communist.
Oh – and I’d move to a global government and away from the primitive tribalism of nations.
We need, as a race, to grow up – and grow up fast – before we completely destroy the planet that gives us life in the pursuit of the dollar.
Best wishes – Opher

PS – there’s more to life than the pursuit of money – but there won’t be if we keep pursuing money at the expense of the planet.

I have sold some books and received glowing reviews.

Opher’s Blog – What is it about?

IMG_0523_2

I set up this blog for a number of reasons:

  1. As an outlet for my creative endeavours (my writing, photography, poetry and art)
  2. As a place to express my opinions (often controversial) on matters such as (the environment, religion, politics, education sex, drugs and health)
  3. As a place to share my interests in Rock Music, Beat Poetry, Film and books.
  4. As a commentary on social issues – ISIS, War, Poverty, Fundamentalism, Love
  5. As a commentary on current affairs
  6. To enjoy argument, discussion and debate, and share ideas
  7. To be thought provoking
  8. To look towards building a better future
  9. To advertise my books so that millions of people will be attracted to them and purchase them

On some of these fronts I’ve failed miserably. On some I’ve been successful. As the subject matter is often outside the popular culture and occasionally challenging I did not expect great popular appeal – but I did hope to contact like minded people and share.

So how successful?

What is your opinion?

The British Legal system – A travesty – In need of an overhaul.

IMG_6506

The British legal system

Having had experience of the British legal system from many sides I think I am qualified to express a few observations and opinions.

The British legal system stinks.

There are probably far better systems elsewhere in Europe.

What we want from a legal system

  1. Justice (for the victim and accused)
  2. Speedily delivered

That is not what we get.

What we get

  1. An archaic charade
  2. An expensive system
  3. A slow, laborious process
  4. An adversarial system that is not concerned with justice but law
  5. A system full of prejudice
  6. A system where the rich can afford to buy better defence
  7. A system that puts money in the pockets of rich barristers
  8. A lottery system where all too often the guilty walk free and the innocent are found guilty

My own experience

  1. As a defendant (found guilty three times for traffic offences I did not commit)
  2. As a jury member (sent an innocent man to prison)
  3. As a person who has listened to other jury members (a catalogue of wrongful convictions and guilty parties walking free)
  4. As a parent of an accused man (wrongfully charged and put through a lengthy process that was so stressful and prolonged, and full of such uncertainty (given the vagaries of the system), that none of us have escaped unscathed. Despite being rightfully found innocent there was an enormous cost – financial, career-wise and on mental health.
  5. As a friend of accused people (guilty and not guilty). The stress and uncertainties, the legal costs and slow process, results in punishment even if later found not guilty.

It hardly fills you with confidence.

A better system

  1. A speedy process that is streamlined
  2. A modern system without all the pageantry and archaic silliness
  3. A system that is not adversarial but seeks to establish the truth. It is not about a clever lawyer putting together a better case than the other lawyer. It is not about how many notches on the belt. It is about justice and whether someone has done it or not.

There are far too many murderers and criminals walking free because they are able to buck the system.

There are far too many victims not receiving justice.

There are far too many innocent people locked up.

From my, admittedly limited knowledge, I much prefer the French system. The Judge, with the help of the police, and interviews with the accused and witnesses, sets out to establish exactly what has happened – seeks the truth – then dispenses justice. There is much we can learn from Europe in many areas – justice is one of them.

I think the British are often arrogant and unwilling to change. Our justice system has not and does not serve us well. The jury system is highly flawed (bored, unintelligent, prejudiced people do not make good judgements). The system has bias towards rich and middle-class whites and against young, lower-class men from ethnic minorities. It is time we learnt from best practice elsewhere and overhauled the whole system.

Back on board!!!

Hi guys,

Sorry about my long absence. I’ve just spent two months touring South America – Brazil, Argentina, Chile,. Uruguay, Falklands. We went cruising on an old East German ice-breaker. It was superb.

It’s been incredible – a bit scary at times. Met some nice people, saw some amazing sights, caught some rays, saw some wild-life, had some great meals, a few wines, lots of laughs and had a real think.

The social and political mood of the whole of South America is fraught!

I’ve come back with three new books, a ton of photos and a little more understanding!

I’ll be sharing it all with you over the next few months!

Thanks for all your continuing support!

Cheers

Opher

New Year – completely realistic – resolutions!

IMG_4815

In the past I have been criticised for being too much of an idealist. Some people considered that my resolutions were not pragmatic.

I always take advice on board and make relevant changes.

In order that I am not accused of being unrealistic, and taking on too much, I have decided to limit the number of resolutions to a number that are manageable so that I do not over-extend myself.

Eight resolutions seems the sort of number I could handle.

Here are my eight resolutions:

I resolve to –

  1. Halt the damage to the environment all over the world and put an end to the slaughter of the planet’s wild-life.
  2. Reverse the human population explosion! I reckon that reducing numbers to under 4 Billion would solve most of the problems (poverty, war, environmental destruction, resources, equality, migration etc.)
  3. Stop all war everywhere!
  4. Eradicate cruelty from human nature.
  5. Bring love, harmony and peace to all humanity.
  6. Create toleration between all people’s, creeds, religions, races and football supporters.
  7. End poverty, inequality, racism and misogyny.
  8. To replace organised religion with rational thought, awe, wonder and spirituality.

Well I think that is enough for me to be going on with for this year. The rest will have to wait until I’ve got these eight out of the way. Next year I’ll sort out another eight!

Now all I have to do is get these eight resolutions polished off!!

Wish me luck!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I wish you all a fantastic year!

I thought I’d share the wisdom of the Christmas crackers we have just pulled!!

Why does Santa have three gardens?

So he can ‘Ho Ho Ho’.

What do mice do in the daytime?

Mousework.

What do you get if you cross a snowman and a shark?

Frostbite

Where do you take sick horses?

The horsepital.

OK – that sums up the frivolity – the kids loved them!

Have a great New Year!

All the best

Much Love

Opher

Let’s change the world for the better!!

A 2000 post re-evaluation. What do you think?

IMG_5580

This is my 2000th post on Opher’s World.

I started blogging in May 2014 so I suppose that is quite good going. At any milestone it is always good to re-evaluate what the aims are and what has been achieved.

I set out to write my blog to do a number of things:

  1. To share all the various aspects of my creative life (My writing, poetry, photography and art)
  2. To have an outlet for my views and opinions
  3. To publicise my books
  4. To hone my skills in a different way
  5. To influence the world and be part of a positive force for change
  6. To highlight the huge problems with overpopulation, environmental destruction, extinction of species, political madness, fundamental religion and social stupidity
  7. To communicate my love of nature
  8. To share my musical tastes
  9. To have a bit of fun

So? Whose to judge the success of this venture? Well I can give my opinion but the real arbiters are you – the readers of my posts. I seemingly have 5500 followers in 150 different countries (though I never hear from most of them – I think they are fictitious). Have you found them informative, inspiring, entertaining and purposeful?

From my perspective it has been a mixed bag.

  1. I’ve certainly shared my creativity. There’s a wealth of writing, poems, photos and painting in these 2000 posts
  2. I’ve vented my spleen on anything that’s taken my fancy
  3. I’ve noticed that every single time I publicise my books the sales dip. I’m not sure what that tells me? In that sense it appears to have been counterproductive
  4. It has been interesting to try writing (and thinking) in a different medium
  5. I haven’t yet solved all the world’s problems. But I do believe that we have to keep plugging away. There are millions of us out there. We can make a difference.
  6. I have certainly highlighted problems and solutions.
  7. I hope I have communicated my love of nature
  8. There are heaps of posts on lyrics, bands, singers and Rock Music (in its widest sense) – the things and people that have influenced me.
  9. I have had fun and interacted with some brilliant new friends all over the world.

Well Thank you all. I’m not quite sure where this journey is going. I think I will likely take a break from blogging for a while and see what else life has to offer. Blogging is remarkably time consuming. It has distracted me from my books.

Perhaps it is time to put it into perspective.

The Mystical Santa with his mischievous elves say THANK YOU to all people concerned with Opher’s World.

Father Christmas

I Thank you for making this year special!

Thank you for supporting my blog!

Thank you for buying my books!

Thank you for leaving all those reviews on Amazon!

Santa may not be coming in person but his spirit is alive. It is altruistic, generous and jolly!

May you all enjoy a perfect day with your family! That’s the spirit of Christmas! Whatever belief or non-belief, whatever colour, whatever creed, whatever country, and whatever you hold to be true –

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

I wish you all the best!
