Labour Leader – WCW – Dolores Huerta

Labour Leader – WCW – Dolores Huerta

One world – one people – united we are stronger. We need strength to stand up to the corporations who are destroying the planet for profit.

Karmic Reaction Blog

Dolores Huerta is an activist and labor leader who co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers.
Synopsis

“Dolores Huerta has worked to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and to fight discrimination. To further her cause, she created the Agricultural Workers Association (AWA) in 1960 and co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta stepped down from the UFW in 1999, but she continues her efforts to improve the lives of workers, immigrants and women.

Early Life

Activist and labor leader Dolores Fernández, better known as Dolores Huerta, was born April 10, 1930, in Dawson, New Mexico, the second child of Juan and Alicia (Chavez) Fernandez. The young family struggled, and by the time Dolores was three, her parents divorced and her mother moved Dolores and her two brothers to Stockton, California. Dolores maintained a relationship with her father, who later became a union activist…

Progress on Writing Projects!

I am working on three major projects at the moment.

Project 1 – In Search of Roy Harper

My book – Ruminating on Roy Harper – is being rewritten. I am eight chapters in. It is being looked at by my editor and I hope to get it finished in the next couple of months.

Project 2 – the Sci-fi novel – Schizoid

This is a sequel to Quantum Fever. I have completed two rewrites and it is presently being read. When I have the views back I will carry out a third rewrite. It should then be ready to publish.

Project 3 – The Sci-fi novel – Farm 703 -The Human Project

This is the book I am working on right now. I have completed the first draft and am a quarter of the way through the rewrite.

Project 4 – Poetry book 17

I often produce poems as I go along. These accumulate into my poetry books. I have accumulated quite a few. When I have enough I will spend time arranging them, adding the prose and organise them into a book.

If you would like to read one of my books they are all available on Amazon. Below are some links to a selection:

Positive effects of the Corona Virus.

There is rarely a disaster that does not have at least a few positive effects and that is surely true of this Covid-19 pandemic.

I thought it would be a good idea to look at some of the positive outcomes:

a. It might stop the Chinese from slaughtering wild animals in their markets in Wuhan and other provinces (how the epidemic was believed to have started). Wild animals are currently caught all over the world and taken to China to be killed. Perhaps they will leave these poor animals in the wild where they belong.

b. It may encourage better partnership and cooperation between countries as we work together to combat this threat. This recent move to isolate and compete is not good.

c. It might bring out the best in people – the more altruistic, caring side – as we join together to help those in need – to look after our neighbours and care for each other – to be less selfish and greedy.

d. It might make us value our nurses, teachers and doctors more. Public servants have been penalised with poor pay and worsening pensions. It’s time we realised what a great job them do and how important they are.

e. It might make us realise that money is not everything and that this society has got its priorities wrong. We reward bankers and greed and punish caring. Perhaps it is our bankers who should be on low wages and our carers who should be properly rewarded?

f. Perhaps we might start to think about nature more and care for the planet better?

g. Already we can see that the economic downturn has had a positive effect of pollution and carbon dioxide emissions. If I believed in Gaia I would say the planet is giving us a warning.

h. Perhaps killing off a number of the older members (like me) would do a little to address our overpopulation problem? It’s time we made this a priority!

I. We should be thankful that it does not seem to affect our children greatly! Things could be a lot worse.

j. This is a great practice for when the real killer virus comes through! There is bound to be one that kills a much higher percentage of people than this one.

k. It may make us value our friends, family and lifestyle more than we have.

l. It might make us look at our priorities and question what we are doing.

m. It will certainly give a lot of us some time to think and do things we never had time to do.

Who knows. The world is going to be different when this is all over!

Our amazing galaxy – and our not quite so amazing Eric Idle (though he’s pretty amazing!)

Our amazing galaxy – and our not quite so amazing Eric Idle (though he’s pretty amazing!)

Now for something completely different and more uplifting!!

Eric Idle is an idol of mine.

Monty Python brightened up my days as a youth and altered comedy from mindless Sit Com to something more alternative with more bite.

Eric’s intelligence shone through as you can see in the lyrics of this song and many others. Who else could have take a bunch of facts about the universe and created such a delightful song. with awe, wonder and humour in equal dollops.

WHENEVER LIFE GETS YOU
DOWN, MRS. BROWN, AND
THINGS SEEM HARD OR TOUGH,
AND PEOPLE ARE STUPID,
OBNOXIOUS OR DAFT AND YOU
FEEL THAT YOU’VE HAD QUITE
ENOUGH…

Just remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolving,
And revolving at 900 miles an hour,
That’s orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it’s reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour
Of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our Galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars
It’s 100,000 light years side to side
It bulges in the middle, 16,000 light years thick
But out by us it’s just 3,000 light years wide

We’re 30,000 light years from galactic central point,
We go round every 200 million years
And our Galaxy is only one of millions and billions
In this amazing and expanding Universe
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know,
12 million miles a minute, and that’s the fastest speed there is.

So remember when you’re feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely it is your birth
And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space,
Because there’s bugger all down here on Earth.

Poetry – The Sun is not the Same – our lives are patterns – yet there is no stability.

The Sun is not the Same

We live our lives as if there is stability. It is an illusion. There is not stability – only relentless change. There are patterns that follow a progression. Our days, our lives, our universe are changing patterns.

The seconds, years and aeons roll by. Only with time can we measure the amount of change.

Every three months every cell in our body (apart from neurones) is replaced. We live with a new body and yet we are still recognisably us.

Every day we look up at the sun and stars and the sky looks the same, yet all the light is new. We have never seen it before.

All our lives we fit into the patterns that we are part of. The patterns evolve slowly, yet they change.

One day we wake and the pattern has shifted. The lie of stability has slipped. Things will never be the same. There is a new pattern. An element has gone forever, has altered.

In Aberfan it was the slip of a waste tip.

The Sun is not the Same

That sun is not the same today.

Yesterday’s light is gone forever.

This light is new –

Each moment –

A new sun

Reborn from the cauldron of change.

That burnished light

Might look the same;

That warmth might raise spirits

In the same fashion,

But it is new light

That never tasted space before.

These eyes that see

Are not the eyes of yesterday.

They have been renewed,

Rebuilt with new cells

In a perpetual cycle of rebirth.

Everything changes,

For that is the law,

Yet remains the same

In patterns that are set

To evolve slowly;

Patterns that deceive.

There are many more – why not give them a go! You’ll love them!

The Corona Diaries – Day 5

Well I’ve still got a bit of a cough and runny nose and Liz woke up with a temperature. Normally we’d just think we had a bit of a cold but these aren’t normal times are they?

So we are in isolation for three months! Today I will nip down to post a parcel, buy some milk and onions and cancel the paper. Then we will settle back to read, write, watch TV, go for solitary walks and watch some films (as well as blogging, editing and checking with the family and friends on line).

Slightly different to some of the scenes in America. People in line to buy guns! What is that about?? They fear the end of society?? I can imagine a few scenarios:

‘OK you goddam virus – stick your nose round my door an’ I’ll blast you to hell!!’

or is it:

‘Any goddam foreigner pokes their nose into my part of town an’ I’ll blast them to hell!!’

You have to laugh. So many of them really do think they are John Wayne!

Ghost Town – The Specials

This was a song that was written for the devastation wreaked by Thatcher on many communities around the country but it seems extremely appropriate for what is going on right now. As we lock down our towns are empty. It is a ghost town like never before. The bands don’t play no more!

Ghost Town – The Specials

This town, is coming like a ghost town
All the clubs have been closed down
This place, is coming like a ghost town
Bands won’t play no more
Too much fighting on the dance floor

Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town?
We danced and sang, and the music played in a de boomtown

This town, is coming like a ghost town
Why must the youth fight against themselves?
Government leaving the youth on the shelf
This place, is coming like a ghost town
No job to be found in this country
Can’t go on no more
The people getting angry

This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town

No-one ever gets out alive – Roy Harper

I thought this might be appropriate at this moment in time! Roy has a song for every contingency!

I’m getting on with being one of the people! Looking forward to that chestnut tree in April!

But we don’t have time to participate in the slime of society! Let’s live!

But thank heavens we don’t live forever!

No one ever gets out alive
Not you or me
Can you imagine TV in heaven
Ghosts on Eleven Alive
Elvis and Jesus on Johnny Carson
God on the same 9 to 5
(Thank goodness) No-one ever gets out alive
Not you or me
Under the spreading chestnut in April
I’m gonna lay me down
Get on with being one of the people
Don’t let it get me down
(Thank goodness) No-one ever gets out alive
Not you or me
All of my life I’ve been chasing reality
All that I write is a dream
But some dreams come true
Though it’s only a few
The most are off-beam
And all that I see are the ghosts of the robbers
Who laid all these traps
Where blind politicians made desperate decisions
With wall to wall cops
And I’m so surprised at you
I never realised that you needed living this way
I thought you had brains
But it only remains
To bid you good day
And a very good day
Cos me and my lady know it’s so shady
We sometimes try turning away
But where can we go
Where we just wouldn’t know
There’s only today
But the road’s so long and longer
Like a dream adrift a stone
Where she and I together lie
And then apart are thrown
Two pebbles in the wheel-treads
Of passing afternoon
Shed by time and circumstance
Two lovers in the moon
And through the passing years love
I will quest for you and I
I know you are my lady
You’ll believe me by and by
By and by
Falling here with her
Into the evening breeze
Over her shoulder
Before the sunset seas
O my love
Must we leave this place
To believe
That all the time
We slowly climb
Towards the vision
We are the people
Precious time began
We are the people
When all is said and done
We are the people
We are everyone
We are the people
And gone
We don’t have precious time my love
To hide in high rise crime above
These politics of slime my love
We only have each others eyes
To see the world
(Can I read your hands
Are there any lines
Do we carry on
Are there any signs?)
I’m looking to build a home
With you
If I ask you to be part
Of me
And true
In the heart
That I will always be
In you
And I trust my true love
You in me
And I’m looking to build this dream
Come true
Into the deep of deepest
Heart to heart
With you
And all us children
In this present world
So sadly far apart
Can you hear me
As all the time
We slowly climb
Towards the vision
We are the people
Precious time began
We are the people
When all is said and done
We are the people
We are everyone
And gone
And power
Cannot be held
For longer than splitting an atom
Or longer than batting an eyelid
Or longer than being a bee
On a flower
Any by and by
I’m gonna see your face
In another sky
As we leave this place
With an old invitation in your smile
No prosecution or any trial
And under the spreading chestnut in April
I’m gonna lay my case
With you in my arms as two of the people
Head out to inner space
(Thank goodness) No one ever gets out alive
Not you or me
I didn’t say no-one ever got out
But no-one ever gets out alive
Not you or me

The Corona Diaries – Day 4

Well what a change in a few days. Johnson has finally woken up! We’re shut down – no more social interaction for 3 months – possibly longer.

I have a bit of a cough and runny nose – in the past I’d call it a cold. Now it could be a little more ominous! But I do not really think it’s anything more than a cold. I feel fine!!

So we are not allowed out. We have enough food to last a while. Tomorrow I will pop into our local shop, post some parcels, buy the last paper, buy some onions and salad and say goodbye to the world outside!

No more gigs. No more trips abroad. No more cinema. No more theatre. No more restaurants, No more meeting friends. Life is closing in a lot!

No more writing group, yoga, fitness classes – but we will be taking walks in the countryside and hopefully it will be sunny.

We’ll manage!!

Yipee!!!  Plenty to read – plenty to write – plenty of photos to process!!

We’ll be good!!

Baton down the hatches!! Keep building those ventilators!!

Good luck everybody!! See you on the other side!! Keep posting!!. Keep commenting!! Keep liking!! Keep buying my books!! Keep leaving reviews!!!

Time to support each other!!
