The Death Diaries Chapter 3

P1030198

3.

So how would I like to die?

Peaceably in my sleep like my grandfather – not screaming and terrified like his passengers.

Well yes. I would prefer to die peaceably in my sleep without any long drawn out illness. I do not relish pain or the fear that comes from having to confront the end of everything. I’ve watched people going through the process of dying. It is not pleasant but perhaps it is worse for the spectators?

Heart failure is the best – at around three in the morning just after completing a pleasant set of dreams. The heart stops and the oxygen supply dries up – the brain shuts down. The various other tissues and organs follow suit in order of their oxygen requirements. I think the skin is the last to go – days later. That’s why you have to shave corpses.

Poetry – Sun Life

P1080887

Sun Life

It’s a beautiful planet we live on with its broad expanses of waters, cooling breezes and green vegetation.

It’s a jewel.

Life runs free on that rich soil.

This is the world we evolved on. A symbiotic web of life that is all sustaining.

This is the goldilocks planet.

There is so much beauty and wonder crammed into a tiny corner of the galaxy.

We need to breathe it in every now and then, to feel its awesome strength and relish its unlikely marvels. The fact that we are here at all is incredible.

To have the consciousness to appreciate its splendours is something to celebrate.

A mere second in this place is worth a billion years of oblivion.

 How fortunate we are.

Sun Life

Sun shine

Sky blue

Leaf green

Wet dew

Cool drink

Broad sea

Brown sand

Run free

Pleasure rife

Big grin

Clasped hand

All win

Poetry – the exam machine – the factory machine

P1080777P1080768

The Exam Machine

As our schools continue down the path to achieve factory status and our children become units to be slotted in the machine I wonder how this will meet the needs of the modern world.

Each school will become a self-contained business, worshipping on the altar of flawed international PISA tables.

The religious fundamentalists and big business are keen to get in on the academy act. They do not have to employ qualified teachers. That’s fine when all you are doing is getting the poor mites to recite medieval verse or learn how to stack a shelf; it cuts running costs.

The government loves this academy business. They can farm out a lot of the costs to those people, whoever they are, who are dying to get their hands on our children. As a bonus they can zoom up the PISA tables, break the teacher’s pay and conditions, wrest control of schools away from commie county halls and parents, and appeal to nostalgia where previous generations were terrorised and fed boring drivel to regurgitate.

It’s a race back to the fifties with knowledge based exams. Because what we need now are kids who can recite facts. I know all facts and knowledge are readily available at the push of a phone key but regurgitating them is fun. We don’t really need any of those namby pamby social skills, teamwork, qualities, creativity, lateral thinking or all those useless subjects like music, art, ICT, history, drama or geography. Double doses of Maths and English are all that’s required.

We can employ ex-soldiers to control the bored lovelies as they progress through the tedium.

Besides – they are only state school kids. Anyone with anything about them pays so that they don’t have to kow-tow to Ofsted or follow all this rubbish. The Public School kids are the ones that really count.

The Exam Machine

Putting my kid through the exam machine –

A number in a box.

I’m proud she a fine statistic,

But she’d better pull up her socks.

She cannot let the side down;

She got to learn

To take the knocks.

There is no time for fun

In the shadow of the exam factory,

No skills, partnership

Or room for creativity.

They sit in lines

To learn the goods,

Raising standards

On the way.

As they tick the box

When you test them

They have all the rote

Things to say.

Poetry – Air to breathe

BookCoverImageAnthropocene Apocalypse cover

Air to breathe

This is another of my Anthropocene Apocalypse poems. All I see is disaster and destruction. If we do not do something quickly we will lose our wilderness and wild-life. All that will remain will be the cute and scary locked up in zoos.

Yesterday I visited Tropical World in Leeds. It was great in one way. There were lots of butterflies, snakes, rare birds, reptiles and Meer cats for the kids to see. They were on display.

Part of me delighted at seeing all these creatures. Part of me was filled with sorrow.

I said to Liz that I bet that the creatures will be glad when the hordes had gone home and it was quiet again.

It was sad to see creatures confined to their little enclosures. The hornbills flew from one end of the room to the other above our heads. The birds and creatures had difficulty trying to escape the eyes and voices. Too many were trying to escape from the restrictions of their homes.

I do not like to see wild animals confined for human to gawk at, even if it is done humanely.

What saddens me more is that this is likely to be the type of place where animals like this survive.

Where once they teemed, now they are struggling to find a corner to live in.

The tide of humans is swamping the planet.

Air to Breathe

Air to breathe

Water to drink

Room to grow

Time to think

A world to live?

A planet to die?

A reason to work for

In a darkening sky?

At a crossroad

On the brink

One more mistake

And down the drink

Poetry – Can a bee sing? – A poem about environmental catastrophe.

BookCoverImage 61qDTq70unL__AA160_ 51QC-PE-PZL__AA160_

Can a bee sing?

I wrote this poem while in a state of melancholic anguish having watched a programme about the poaching of rhinos.

Rhinos, elephants and forests are being eradicated at an increasing and alarming rate.

I have travelled the world and seen this relentless destruction on every continent. I have stood on streets packed with humans, stinking of car fumes, full of the clamour of vendors. I have seen all manner of bush-meat for sale. I have seen huge brown slicks of sewage snake around bays of blue clear water. I have seen trucks dumping city rubbish on beaches. I have stood among stumps that once were a thick jungle full of Tasmanian devils and koalas.

We reduce all life down to the level of worthlessness. Living creatures are seen as either pests to be eradicated, creatures to be abused for entertainment, or food to be consumed.

It appears to me that we are on the brink of destroying the entire natural world. There are too many of us and we are too greedy and thoughtless.

Perhaps trees do scream?

Can a bee sing?

Can a bee sing?

A bird cry?

A tree scream

Or a chimp ask why?

Can a fly dream?

A worm sigh?

A flower weep?

Or a man deny?
