The Death Diaries Chapter 3

P1030198

3.

So how would I like to die?

Peaceably in my sleep like my grandfather – not screaming and terrified like his passengers.

Well yes. I would prefer to die peaceably in my sleep without any long drawn out illness. I do not relish pain or the fear that comes from having to confront the end of everything. I’ve watched people going through the process of dying. It is not pleasant but perhaps it is worse for the spectators?

Heart failure is the best – at around three in the morning just after completing a pleasant set of dreams. The heart stops and the oxygen supply dries up – the brain shuts down. The various other tissues and organs follow suit in order of their oxygen requirements. I think the skin is the last to go – days later. That’s why you have to shave corpses.

  1. Well if Heart Failure is the best way to go, then I stand a good chance having HF but there are other complications. As long as I don’t know what is going on and I am in my own bed that will be ok – what I don’t want is to die in a hospital where one gets neglected, I know, I have had that treatment where you are treated with no respect.

    1. Yeah – I agree.
Heart failure in my sleep sounds OK. I’m open to suggestions though. When it comes to it we won’t have a choice.

      1. No unfortunately we will not have a choice Opher, or when it is going to happen. Death one tries to put to the back of the mind, watching someone die in front of you day after day is horrendous and as much as you may love them you selfishly I suppose want it to end as well – for them, for you.

  2. You have to shave corpses? Can’t they be cremated first?

  3. I have been with many people through the dying process. Many are very peaceful.

    1. Some are left to suffer, screaming to the end. One puts a dog to sleep so it won’t suffer, but this Country we let people suffer, WHY?

  4. That’s the way my mom and dad passed. I just heard that the other day that it takes up to three days for everything to cease in the body. Thought it was fascinating and explained some customs.
