Poetry – Air to breathe

Air to breathe

This is another of my Anthropocene Apocalypse poems. All I see is disaster and destruction. If we do not do something quickly we will lose our wilderness and wild-life. All that will remain will be the cute and scary locked up in zoos.

Yesterday I visited Tropical World in Leeds. It was great in one way. There were lots of butterflies, snakes, rare birds, reptiles and Meer cats for the kids to see. They were on display.

Part of me delighted at seeing all these creatures. Part of me was filled with sorrow.

I said to Liz that I bet that the creatures will be glad when the hordes had gone home and it was quiet again.

It was sad to see creatures confined to their little enclosures. The hornbills flew from one end of the room to the other above our heads. The birds and creatures had difficulty trying to escape the eyes and voices. Too many were trying to escape from the restrictions of their homes.

I do not like to see wild animals confined for human to gawk at, even if it is done humanely.

What saddens me more is that this is likely to be the type of place where animals like this survive.

Where once they teemed, now they are struggling to find a corner to live in.

The tide of humans is swamping the planet.

Air to Breathe

Air to breathe

Water to drink

Room to grow

Time to think

A world to live?

A planet to die?

A reason to work for

In a darkening sky?

At a crossroad

On the brink

One more mistake

And down the drink

  1. This minute if I have had enough of people and their stupid lies so yes it could now. Not you, someone else. Now you know very well I would have to finish your books first.

    1. OK. That sounds reasonable.
First you have to agree to read every one of my books.
Then all I have to do is keeping writing them at a faster rate than you can read them!

  2. Don’t you just detest people who string you along for weeks on end and have not got the guts to tell you the truth. Perhaps I am too honest expect too much, I don’t know. YES I will read all your books, except the sci fi I just don’t understand that subject, and that will keep you busy thinking up ideas and writing.

    1. Don’t know who you’re referring to but yes – they are a real nuisance. They wind you up.
I’ll let you off the Sci-fi. I’ve got a new idea for another book. I’m finishing the voyage one first.

  3. Think of hair and so called “friends”. Thanks I never look at sci fi that’s Jonathan’s call. Are there many “naughty bits” in the next one.

      1. Number 1, you do. No.2, No. Surprise more than anything, see how held back we catholic kids were. No.3 I was thinking of taking “Ginny” with me for the flight, but worried someone might see it and shock, horror, oh those english!!

  4. I think they will be shocked along with me, and when they look at me what the hell are they going to think of me reading a book like that. Your new one looks as though it will shock me even more. Don’t forget I am a good lapse Catholic and all that entailed like innocence. I have to cross my legs when I am reading your book.
