A Fairy Story – How were we supposed to know?

A Fairy Story – How were we supposed to know?

Once upon a time there was a tiny bacterium living in the blood stream of a little girl. They both were very happy together. He had everything he needed. He had all the nutrients he wanted and the tiny bit of poisonous waste he produced was as to a grain of sand in the Sahara.

So the little bacterium lived his life, albeit measured in seconds, in complete bliss and reproduced merrily.

Soon the bacteria were ten, then hundreds, thousands, millions and billions. Between them they consumed lots of nutrients and excreted lots of poisonous waste. But they did not care. There was plenty for all and the little girl’s body was like a huge ocean of food, infinite in its bounty and far too big for them to have an impact on.

Then some of the bacteria noticed that the temperature of the blood was rising and became worried. They thought the little girl might be becoming ill. Some of them thought it might be due to the poisons they were all putting into her blood. They called a meeting.

But one bold bacterium by the name of Neil pooh-poohed their concerns.

‘There is no warming,’ he announced. ‘It is a myth put out by scheming fools who want to control us. It is nonsense. Warming is natural. It comes and goes. It is all part of a natural cycle. It does not suggest illness at all.’

‘But look at the evidence,’ other bacteria argued. ‘We have never had warming like this. All the measurements tell us the same.’

‘Nonsense!’ Neil proclaimed. ‘They are lying! It is merely natural variation. Not everyone even agrees that this warming is happening. Show me one bit of evidence to show that there is a long-term trend! Those who claim the blood is warming are making it up for their own devious reasons!’

Neil glared round at them and stridently decried their concerns. ‘I believe there is no warming at all. And even if there is it is not of our doing!’

‘But Neil,’ the worried bacteria argued. ‘There are other signs that the little girl is ill. The levels of poisons in her bloodstream are very high and many cells are dying.’

‘Nonsense,’ Neil sneered. ‘There are trillions of cells. Cells die all the time. It is the natural cycle. They are replaced by new cells.’ Neil arrogantly stuck his metaphorical nose in the air. ‘Show me one bit of evidence to show that anything I have done has made the little girl ill! I have never killed a single cell in the whole of my life!’

‘But we are worried,’ the bacteria all clamoured. ‘If she is ill it could mean the end of us all!’

‘If you are so concerned,’ Neil blustered scornfully, ‘why don’t you get together with your like-minded chums and do something about it. As for me – I’ll go on as I am. I know that the little I consume and the impact I have is negligible.’

The other bacteria all looked at each other in dismay. They all knew how silly this was. Even if millions of them got together to do something it would make absolutely no difference while the billions carried on the way they were. The only hope of making a real difference was if they all acted together.

But it was hopeless. Most bacteria simply did not care. As long as they had all the things they needed they weren’t worried. Besides, the little girl was enormous. She was resilient. They did not believe that their inconsequential lives would make a jot of difference to her. They preferred to believe the words of Neil, and the many like him, rather than the dire warnings of the experts.

So the bacteria went on breeding, feeding and excreting poisons as if there was no tomorrow. The little girl’s temperature began to rise and rise and she became extremely ill and died.

Inside her cooling bloodstream all the bacteria faced death.

Metaphorically they threw up their hands in horror.

‘It wasn’t my fault!’ they all declared. ‘How were we supposed to know?’

Globalists sowing seeds of destruction and lies.

I’m a biologist and an environmentalist. As such I have studied nature all my life (now approaching 70 years of age). I have travelled the world extensively, read extensively and have many intelligent, scientific, like-minded friends who are as disturbed as me. None of them are in the pay of any globalists!

The evidence is simply before our eyes.

Looking close to home – back in my youth if you went on a car journey the windscreen was splattered. That is no longer the case.

The sticklebacks, swifts, swallows, hedgehogs, snakes, lizards, voles, slowworms, newts, toads and frogs of my youth are now rare or absent.

Travelling the world I seen overpopulation, jungles devoid of life, overfishing, animals being slaughtered wholesale, jungles being ripped down and pollution, rubbish and crud.

We are systematically destroying nature.

Reading the journals of the ships that visited Africa and South America and the plethora of wildlife they encountered fills me with sadness. I’ve visited the same places and the wildlife is a sad remnant of what was.

The people who are denying this decimation of nature must either be blind or don’t get out much. It is right there in front of their noses.

We are driving populations of most species down to extinction level. I have no doubt that we are altering the climate.

I do not doubt the scientific reports for one second. I’ve witnessed it myself.

This Fake News is the dawn of a new ignorance and stupidity.

We arrived in paradise and we’re busy converting it to a desert, a wasteland or a sterile urban sprawl.

It’s time we woke up.

The only people profiting from all this are the globalists. They are getting free-rein to trash the planet for profit.

It’s them behind the fake news. Instead of seeds they are sowing destruction and lies.

The bush is alive – insects, scurrying creatures and large marsupials. I felt at home.

Students show leadership on Climate Change!!

In 60 towns and cities across the UK students a planning a schools walkout to protest the lack of action on Climate Change.

Once again it is the youth who are being responsible while their supposedly ‘responsible’ elders are languishing. While report after report comes out about the catastrophe affecting the environment as a direct result of the actions of  mankind the politicians obfuscate and sit on their hands.

We are staring at a future of mass extinctions, the loss of all insects, the collapse of complex food webs and global warming that would put most of our cities and agricultural land under water. What are our elders doing? They are ignoring it.

Thank heavens for youth. They are the ones that are going to be inheriting the mess we’ve made of the world. Our short-term greed is destroying the planet. We are beset by huge problems of our own making:

Overpopulation

Species extinction

Habitat destruction

Pollution

Global warming

War

Mass poverty

Mass migration

What are the current political leaders doing about it? Sweet Fuck All!!

Thank heavens for the kids! At least they are fighting for the future! More power to them!!

The world’s worth fighting for!! More power to the Youth of today!!

A Leaf Insect from the Smokey Mountains

I used to keep stick insects when I was a kid. It was great to find a leaf insect. Its mimicry of leaves was fantastic. A beautiful insect.

EU Power Efficiency Laws prove effective!!

Great news for the environment!

Laws concerning the efficiency of electrical appliances initiated by the EU have succeeded in cutting our electricity bills by 25%.

EU Legislation has caused the manufacturers of electrical appliances to become more efficient. Our fridges, hoovers, ovens, kettles and other appliances now use much less energy to do the same job. This has not only saved us money on our bills but has reduced the need to burn fossil fuels to make our electricity which is great for the environment. When coupled with the introduction of LED lights this has reduced our electricity use by a quarter. Great stuff!!

At a time when over a third of our electricity is produced by alternative, non-polluting, renewable energy sources, this is brilliant.

The future of our planet does not mean we have to live like hermits in austere houses. It just means that we have to become much more efficient with our energy use (and conservation) and to produce it with non-polluting sources. It is possible!

So well done!!

The Abomination of Whaling!!

Some facts about whales:

In fact the sperm whale has the largest brain of all living animals.

Spindle cells found in several species of whale and dolphin also indicate the possibility of high intelligence

Dolphins and porpoises use vocal sounds and body language to communicate with one another. Baleen whales communicate over hundreds of miles using complex songs.

They have complex social structures. The social structure of killer whale  for example (killer whales are actually dolphins) is often compared to that of elephants and humans, and is even considered by some to resemble a culture.

So why the hell are we hunting and cruelly killing these intelligent, sensitive creatures???
