I find this incredibly distressing.
Vertebrate Wildlife Species Have Declined By Half Over Last 40 Years
Plants and Animals

I find this incredibly distressing.

The Earth, or rather life on Earth, has survived many cataclysmic events and each time (so far) has clawed its way back. The peaks of evolutionary complexity were crushed and over time new forms evolved to take their place – not better but different. We are the present calamity as we destroy the life around us and bring in the biggest wave of extinctions since the last asteroid hit. Already in my lifetime the changes have been dramatic. In my own backyard hedgehogs are a rarity, honey bees absent, few butterflies frolic on the flowers, slowworms, lizards and grass snakes are almost never seen and the streams are devoid of darting sticklebacks. The joys of my youth have vanished.
It saddens me. But I know things will recover.
When we are gone life will return, though it will, I fear, be far too late for so many. Many of our most extraordinary will be gone forever.
Over long periods of time, millennia, new forms of complex life will evolve. Maybe we will even see intelligence evolve again? Maybe not? Whatever evolves will not be predictable and neither will it inevitably be an improvement on what we have now. But the planet will recover. I do not think we are yet capable of destroying all life – just the more complex forms.
I look ahead to those distant times with a modicum of hope. Perhaps in a few million years time the planet will have recovered from our outrages and be vibrant with complex life again? I hope so. And I hope those new forms will prove as wonderful as the variety we now have all around us. But there are no guarantees when dealing with the chance and luck of evolution.
That hope for the future does not prevent me from mourning the demise of the creatures that once teemed over our green jewel of a planet. I mourn for the tiger, elephant, rhino and gorilla, the frog, newt and bee, the butterfly, stickleback and chimpanzee and the hundreds of thousands of other species that we are presently mindlessly destroying.
I mourn. Even my hope for the future fails to raise my spirits. We had so much and we are carelessly throwing it away, discarding living creatures like trash.
The Amazon is so essential for life on this planet. We simply cannot allow it to be sold off and decimated. We owe it to the wild-life that depends on it to protect it forever. Please help stop this new threat.

I have been fortunate enough to live a long life and travel the world. I have seen first hand the effect mankind has had on the planet and it greatly upsets me.
In my lifetime the human population has more than doubled. It is set to double again within my life expectancy – in one lifetime it will have more than quadrupled. It does not take a mathematical genius to know that this is unsustainable.
Common animals such as chimpanzees, tigers, elephants, rhinos, gorillas and butterflies are in danger of becoming extinct.
Everywhere I went it was the same story – deforestation, pollution, destruction, overpopulation and the slaughter of wildlife.
I wrote the Anthropocene Apocalypse to chronicle what I had seen, highlight the terrible consequences of what we were doing to nature and to suggest ways forward.
I tried to write it in an easy to read and interesting manner. I wanted it to be accessible and interesting.
It is the most important book I have written.
What I have witnessed all around the world disgusts and distresses me. We need to sort it out
We can sort it out. If we want to. It does not have to be like this. It is in our power to change it.

Rewan Al-Haddad – Avaaz
|
Ian Dury is wonderful. He was a genius. I loved his poetry and philosophy even though he was meant to have been a cantankerous bastard.
I think this song really captures the dreams of an idealist. They all think I’m mad too. There’s almost a defeatist, listen to the band on the Titanic – it’s going to go down anyway. There’s nothing you can do. Might as well just have a good time and forget that the tycoons are strip-mining the wildernesses and chopping down the jungles, and slaughtering the animals, while the religious fanatics think that god will save the day or it doesn’t matter we’re all going to paradise.
I don’t believe that rubbish.
I’m looking out from the bows and pointing at the ice-berg. We can steer round it! It doesn’t have to end in disaster!
The answers to the world’s problems are all simple. There is nothing hard about it. We elect the psychopaths. We support the business men and bankers (and they are nearly all men) on their mad journey to increase their own pots of gold. We follow the religious nutters on their crusades, inquisitions and caliphates. We are always surprised when the inevitable happens.
Instead of growth lets think sustainable. Instead of nations lets think globally. Instead of worn out diatribes from long deceased superstitions let’s think United Nations charter of Rights. Instead of tribes and patriotism lets think brother and sisterhood. Instead of war, aggression and violence lets think peace, love and fraternity. Instead of homogeneity lets value the difference. Instead of hatred lets work on trust. Instead of destroying – let’s build.
It’s all about a positive Zeitgeist. You’re all welcome.
People tell me it’s human nature; we can’t fight it.
I say bollocks. We’ve come a long way. We don’t burn people, use cat-o-nines, whip, torture, castrate and murder anymore – at least not in this country. We need a global mandate to prevent the pockets of uncivilised behaviour, like ISIS, from having too great an effect.
We don’t go bear-baiting, cock-fighting, dog-fighting or hang people from gibbets.
Human beings can progress and become civilised. We’ve come a long way.
I agree with Ian. I like his dream better than ISIS’s nightmare!
It’s a dream. I get glimpses of it. It could be real!
You’ll See Glimpses
(All spoken)
You’ll see.
They think I’m off my crust as I creep about the caff.
But I’m really getting ready to surprise them all,
Because I’m busy sorting out the problems of the world.
And when I reveal all I may get a crinkly mouth.
I’ve given my all to the task at hand unstintingly.
When it’s all over I’ll rest on my laurels.
Here for a moment is a glimpse of my plan:
All the kids will be happy learning things.
The wind will smell of wild flowers.
Nobody will whack each other about with nasty things.
All the room in the world.
They take me for a mug because I smile.
They think I’m too out of tune to mind being patronised.
All in all, it’s been another phase in my chosen career,
And when my secrets are out they’ll bite their silly tongues.
All I want for my birthday is another birthday.
When skies are blue we all feel the benefit.
Glimpse Number 2 for the listener.
Everyone will feel useful in lovely ways.
Trees will be firmly rooted in town and country.
Illness and despair will be dispensed with.
All the room in the world.
They ask me if I’ve had the voices yet.
They don’t think I know any true answers.
It’s true that I haven’t quite finished yet.
When it all comes out in the wash they’ll eat their words.
I’ve got all their names and addresses.
Later on I’ll write them each a thank-you letter.
Before I stop, here’s a last glimpse into the general future.
Home rule will exist in each home, forever.
Every living thing will be another friend.
This wonderful state of affairs will last for always.
This has been got out by a friend.

Dear Avaazers,
Amidst all the darknesses of our world, Avaaz’s light is shining brightly — we’ve had 4 huge wins in the past few weeks!
– We WON governments agreeing to protect 30% of our oceans!!
– We ENDED the career of Brazil’s corruption king!!
– We helped CREATE the world’s largest marine reserve in the Pacific!!
– We finally STOPPED Monsanto’s mega-plant in Argentina for good!!
In just a few weeks, while we’ve also been flat out on stopping Trump! This movement is getting out of control — in a good way. Let’s keep it up! Here’s more on each win:

Everyone thought our demand of 30% was crazy, except the scientists. But armed with the voices of a million Avaazers, our community stepped into the negotiations and out-maneuvered major blockers like Japan. By standing with Palau, meeting directly with key swing countries, and winning press to our side WE WON big … with 89% of the vote!
The Head of the Palau delegation said – “We were heartened to have 1 million Avaaz members from around the world stand with us.”

Insiders and even journalists warned us that Congress President Eduardo Cunha was too powerful to oust. But we refused to be cowed — over 1.3 million of us demanded a national Ethics Committee vote to fire Cunha. And when his allies rallied to block the vote we hit back — delivering our petition directly to Congress, flooding key swing voters with phone calls, direct messages and on social media, including focusing on officials shielding Cunha. He was forced to resign and then barred from running for office for eight years! And just today, he was arrested!!
Anti-corruption champion MP Chico Alencar told us: “If it hadn’t been for public pressure, we wouldn’t have won. I want to thank and congratulate you.”

Our oceans are in serious trouble, so when we heard that President Obama was weighing whether to create a *giant* marine reserve in Hawaii, a million of us signed a petition and thousands wrote messages. To further tip Obama’s decision we delivered our messages to key meetings, organised colourful protests with kids that helped win over the press, and worked to remove other blockers from Obama’s path. In days the President signed the reserve into law.
The Director of the Global Ocean Legacy project, Matt Rand, said the “1.3 million people who signed and the tens of thousands that sent messages had their voices heard at the White House, and were a big part of getting this done.”

Chemical Giant Monsanto had locked in a high-level deal to build a mega factory in Argentina – but local communities decided to fight it, so we joined forces. Together we went door-to-door, ran polls showing massive local opposition, helped elect a city council opposed to the deal, met Monsanto in court, and amplified the local movement with a million voices worldwide. Monsanto was forced to abandon the project.
Local Malvinas organizer Celina Molina said: “Today we celebrate the victory of our long battle we shared with the global movement Avaaz…. Monsanto has only one option: to go back home.”
If you can’t get enough of this stuff, check out our top ten all time wins, and 100 favorite highlights of Avaaz campaigning. It’s a smorgasborg of people-powered achievement.
Together, we’re not just standing up to forces of hate and division in our world, we’re also driving forward a beautiful vision of hope, step by step building the world most people everywhere want. Because in the end, only love and hope can defeat hate.
With loads of love and appreciation for this amazing movement,
Ricken, with Alice, Ben, Emma, Pascal, Mais, Camille, Dan, Mike and the whole Avaaz team

As the world population soars towards a projected 10 Billion.
As the world’s mammals have been decimated to 44% of what they were 40 years ago!
As the world’s invertebrate population has crashed by nearly half in the last forty years!
As the elephant and lion now join the tiger, rhino and jaguar on the endangered list!
Are we approaching a day when the natural world will be nothing more than a footnote in the history books?
Will we be showing our children and grandchildren the remnants of our wild-life in zoos?
Will we be pollinating our flowers by hand?
Does anybody actually care?
You can read about my own observations and feelings about this in my book:
Please give it a read and pass it round to all your friends. It is time we did something about it. We can alter the zeitgeist!
A whole series of world leaders have condemned Trump’s irresponsible action. They have signed a letter regretting his short-sighted policy. The only one who has refused to sign is Theresa May!
Frightened she might lose someone to hold hands with?
I believe it clearly demonstrates her attitude to the environment. She’s happy to trash the planet as long as she can make a buck or two to plug the giant hole that Brexit will leave.
Is he a moron?
Climate change is an ever more urgent threat. 2016 was the hottest year on record. In the Alps, glaciers have lost half their volume. And killer heat waves are expected in South Asia this summer.
Faced with this, Donald Trump is threatening to pull the US out of the Paris climate agreement. In doing so he has turned his back on the USA’s responsibilities, on science and on the welfare of millions of people.
The next few years are crucial if we are to have any chance at keeping the climate safe. We cannot stand by while Donald Trump takes a wrecking ball to global efforts to prevent catastrophic climate change.
Please will you pledge to do whatever you can – starting today – to keep up the fight. No matter what Donald Trump does.
“Across Africa, we are already dying from killer droughts. We cannot let one man abandon the climate, when millions are trying to save it (and our lives).”
– Kwami Kpondzo, Friends of the Earth Africa
“The US is going rogue on climate change – the world must unify in treating Trump as a pariah and not as an excuse for inaction.”
– Erich Pica, Friends of the Earth US
Save the animals and trees. Sign the pledge!
