Poetry – I’m a Star!!

I’m a Star!!

I live inside a star

Within its light and heat;

The universe at my heels

The earth beneath my feet.

My body made of atoms,

My mind electricity.

I breathe its very fire,

And drink its energy.

I glow, I shine,

I radiate the truth

Of a universe

For which there

Is no proof.

I am a quantum being

Surfing reality.

If Shrodinger’s cat escapes

What will become of me?

Opher – 4.11.2020

It is amazing to think that we live within the atmosphere of a star and are utterly dependent on its output.

We think we understand the reality of our universe but recently quantum physics has turned that on its head.

It’s all unreal.

Poetry – Mother and Father

Mother and Father

Mother Earth and father Sun

Givers of life.

Through electric storms

And UV light,

You transformed

Gas and clay

Into awareness.

Your heat, your light,

Your radiation;

Your rock, your silt

Your impregnation;

All leading to the fairest

Creation

Of them all;

A glory to the cosmos,

A joy to the universe.

A pair of eyes to see the mystery.

A brain to remember and question.

A mind to understand the history.

Opher – 1.11.2020

We are the greatest wonders of the universe. We see and think. We are able to perceive the majesty. We are able to absorb it and ponder on its incredible nature.

We take it for granted yet every aspect is wondrous.

We live on a planet with just the right amount of light, heat and radiation, with water, minerals and electricity. The sun and planet gave us life.

Poetry – Consciousness of Splendour

I am always amazed by the beauty of nature and the fact that we can perceive it.

Consciousness of Splendour

Blues and greens

And yellow sheens.

Reds and blues

And violet beams.

Streaming through the sky

Illuminating the eye,

Setting the brain on fire

With the majesty

Of a universe

Whose mysteries inspire.

Crimson, mauve and magenta.

The imagination

Of the world’s placenta,

Germinating

A fusion of thoughts

That stimulate

A creative agenda.

Cerise, vermillion and chartreuse,

The full spectrum

Of all the colours we can use

In the consciousness

Of splendour.

Opher – 1.11.2020

Our eyes, our brain, accessing the wonders of nature all around us – a universe full of colour, full of nuance.

All those colours, the full spectrum of nature, flooding into our minds.

The wonder out there is inside us.

We all glow with possibility, revelling in the consciousness of splendour.

Limestone Escarpment at Malham Tarn.

There is something that I find incredibly picturesque about the cracks and crevices of limestone escarpments. The bottom of an ancient sea thrown up for us to wonder at.

Poetry – It’s All We’ve Got

It’s All We’ve Got

It’s all we’ve got! One wondrous planet!

It’s all we’ve got! One short life!

It’s all we’ve got!

We can pretend! There’s something more.

We can pretend! In afterlives.

We can pretend!

We should care! Wonder at it.

We should care! Appreciate it.

We should care!

It’s all we’ve got! One wondrous planet!

It’s all we’ve got! One short life!

It’s all we’ve got!

Opher – 22.10.2020

I often wonder if this superstitious belief in heaven, paradise, an afterlife, isn’t the most evil thing. Our inability to handle death. It consumes us.

This belief that this is a mere interlude before we enter a life in eternity. It holds us back.

There is no life after this.

We came from nothing. We go back to nothing and the universe ceases to exist.

Perhaps if we were able to accept that there is only this, nothing more, then we would value it more, look after it better and appreciate the wonder all around.

What a wondrous place to wake up in. This is heaven – for a short while. Let’s not make it hell.

Poetry – The Magic Strand

The Magic Strand

A rollercoaster ride down the magic strand,

Through aeons,

Traversing a billion forms

All from the same,

Spiralling through time.

Replicating,

                Mutating,

                                Innovating.

Making carbon think.

Careering through genetic codes,

Through eras,

Creating myriad varieties,

The forms of life.

Reproducing,

                Generating,

                                Propagating,

Another living link.

Opher – 18.10.2020

There is magic going on in front of our very eyes. It’s called life.

It began through some amazing set of chance three billion years ago. Randomly. Just once.

We are surrounded by it and take it all for granted.

We are part of something stupendous.

It is time we realised what a wonder it is.

Poetry – We Are Of It

We are of it.

All part of it,

                In it,

                                Of it.

Not apart.

It lives in us.

We are all one.

                Not superior,

                                No order,

Not apart.

All part of the same,

                The whole,

                                The oneness.

Equal.

All fired by

                The same,

                                Chemistry.

Metaphysically.

Not apart.

Connected.

Oneness.

Sacred.

Opher – 19.10.2020

All life on this planet started from the same magical beginning. Only once. We are all related. That protein/DNA construct we call life began and has propagated itself into a myriad of self-replicating forms. It has learnt to swim, to walk, to crawl and talk, to fly and wonder. It is aware. It is conscious. It can think.

It is not just us that is important, not just us that is aware. All of life shares these attributes.

Life is aware.

We are part of something spectacular and sacred, not apart from it.

Poetry – The River

The River

It flows continuously,

Always different

Yet the same.

We grow continuously,

Always different

Yet the same.

Molecules flow through.

Replacing all,

Yet we remain.

Every three months,

New bodies,

The smile the same.

The river of the cosmos

Flows through,

An endless game.

Opher – 17.10.2020

For us the changes of age come slowly even though the changes are much faster. Cells die and are replaced. Every three months we have a new body, yet it is built to the same plan.

The molecules flow in and the molecules flow out like water flowing down a river.

We look the same but we are always different.

The Infinite Possibilities of the Unobserved

There is nothing quite so strange as quantum. The act of observing matter affects what it does. The power of mind. Is matter conscious?

Poetry – How wondrous – for a secular, humanist ritual

P1030655

Secular Rituals

Human beings have a great need for rituals. We go in for uniforms and pageant. Our rituals tend to be militaristic or religious. Dave Kingsbury (of the great blog – A nomad in cyberspace) thought that it would be a great idea to write some secular rituals that acknowledged the wonder of life; rituals that did not require belief, religion or celebrate violence.

It sent me thinking.

This is what came out. I’m not sure if it’s a poem or a secular psalm. I see it as part of a humanist ritual.

How Wondrous

Wondrous it is to open your eyes into this universe of beauty.

Wondrous it is to behold the splendour of the stars, sun, rocks and trees.

Wondrous is the ecstasy of life.

For with our eyes we see,

Our ears we hear,

As all our senses penetrate

The mysteries that surround us.

The wonder of moon and sun,

Of sunset over sea,

Of grass rippling in the breeze,

The splash of stars

Across a velvet heaven,

The sigh of love,

The thud of drums,

Vibration of strings,

The tinkle of water over rocks,

The crash of waves,

Skeletons of trees against an orange sky,

Shapes of clouds against an agonising blue;

The oranges, yellow, reds and greens

That flood the eyes with beauty –

The wonder of life.
