The Corona Diaries – Day 358

It’s a bit damp, overcast and cold here in Yorkshire. I’ve put off my walk until this afternoon. Had a zoom meeting with friends this morning. That was fun!

This afternoon I’m going to try and get my Harper book completed! We’ll see. It has been taking a huge amount of time and energy.

I’ve been playing some Robert Johnson! Fabulous stuff. He was so good. A tragedy that he was poisoned at such an young age. He was a genius.

Meanwhile, out in Coronaland the madness continues.

The controversy over the AstraZeneca jab deepens as Spain joins, Germany, France and Italy in pausing its use. Seems daft to me and extremely politically motivated.

So far there have been over 17 million AstraZeneca jabs given in Europe. There have been 15 reported cases of blood clots in ensuing weeks and 22 cases of embolisms. That is in fact lower than you would expect in 17 million people over that time – and not one of those cases has been attributed to the vaccine.

There is something going on here. I suspect it is the ongoing bad relations between the EU and UK following Brexit.

Meanwhile, around the world, more vaccines are coming on stream. China has five now. Russia is getting out its vaccine around the world.

The sooner everyone is vaccinated the better! I can’t wait for my second shot – and after a booster in autumn to pick up the variants I will feel secure for travelling the world again.

Bolsonaro has sacked another health minister as their death-rate soars. It seems that the previous ones refused to deny it was happening and thought some action should be taken. It’s OK – the new one is a denying nincompoop who will do as he’s told and pocket the money. Bolsonaro is intent on doing his best to reduce the world population – just like Trump and Johnson.

We’re down to 5089 new cases with only 64 deaths. At this rate even Dido Harding with just £37 billion can get on top of it!

Stay safe!!

Peru The magnificent Colca Canyon – Photos

We came down from the heights into the Magnificent Colca Canyon, famous for its condors. It was impressive with its terracing and chasms.

Peru – Condors in the Colca Canyon

We had to get up early to catch the Condors. As the heat started the birds flew on the thermals. They were huge.

Peru – A dance festival in a mountain village

We just happened to be passing through when a festival was taking place. The women, dressed in bright costume, were dancing in the square.

Poetry – I do not accept the limits

I do not accept the limits

I do not accept the limits of my life.

Why should I?

There are no rules.

To push the boundaries

Is just part

Of what makes up

This pack of tools.

I dream of the impossible;

To create

A panacea

Fit for fools.

Opher 14.4.2016

I do not accept the limits

There are no rules. We make life up each and every moment.

All we have are habits and a heritage that we must pick from. Yet, with intelligence and personality, we can choose whatever path presents. We do not have to tread the well-trodden route.

There is nothing we cannot try. There is no way of knowing where a new path leads. That is how we discover new places.

If we try we might just succeed. There are no limits to what can be achieved if we but try.

We make our own limits, usually well within our scope. It is best to reach further even if we fall.

We are all building a new future.

There is a part to play.

Who is holding back?

Poetry – What we want

What we want

What we want

Is not hard to say

It is merely hard to do.

We want the world

To stay green,

Full of animals

That are free

And skies that are blue.

We want the water clear

And trees to wave

In the breeze;

Tigers and rhinos

Running through the long grass

As they used to do.

It’s not too much to want

In a world so big

Is it?

Opher 14.4.2016

What we want

It seems that I want the impossible. I want the world.

I want life to flourish.

I want the wild creatures free and running through the wilderness.

I want the space for every type of life to flourish.

There’s room enough.

I’m not alone.

Lots of us want the same thing.

I am told it is too much to ask for.

People are more important.

No they are not.

I do not believe they are.

The ants and bees are as important. There should be room for the chimpanzees.

I do not believe it is impossible.

If we have the intelligence we can manage our numbers, manage the land, and leave room enough foe everything.

The Corona Diaries – Day 357

The sun shone with a return of spring although there was a cold north wind. I walked up my hill to present my adopted horse with a carrot. Returning home I’ve been playing some Captain Beefheart and working on the Harper book. It’s nearly finished. I’m just twenty pages from the end. I’ve reached the point where I just want to get it off to the publisher and concentrate on something else!

Out in Coronaland political madness still reigns.

The women take to the street in protest at violence against women and receive a big dose of violence from the police (who were carrying out the instructions of our wonderful politicians). So much for reducing violence against women.

The new Tory bigwig at the BBC purges left-wing bias from the BBC schedules. The MASH Report is axed. It seems that no criticism of Brexit or the Tories is to be tolerated. All part of the Tory propaganda machine. They really do not want opposition.

The boundary commission are going to alter the boundaries and make it harder for Labour to get elected.

The tabloids are pouring out a stream of pro-tory propaganda.

It looks more and more like a police state with a one-party system.

The mood of jubilation at the success of the vaccination programme and the imminent lifting of lockdown has given the Tories an incredible 7% lead!

How quickly people forget!

I suppose we have to wait and see if people wake up when the reality of Brexit hits home with soaring prices, oodles of red tape and job losses.

Then the way the public services and poor have to pick up the bill for Tory cronyism and bad handling of the pandemic.

Will we ever have an objective review of how the pandemic was handled? – and why we have the worst death-rate and worst hit economy? – and where billions were wasted?

Will we ever have an objective review of Brexit? – how much it is really costing? – how many jobs have been lost? – how business has been affected by red tape? – how many firms collapsed or moved abroad? – how much it is costing the economy?

I suspect it will all be whitewashed!

The corona news is all about two countries halting the AstraZeneca jabs on the basis of fifteen people developing blood clots. That seems crazy to me. With 17 million jabs given there have been 15 reported cases of clotting and 22 of embolisms in people in the weeks after vaccination. That sounds bad but is actually less than would be expected in a group of 17 million people. It sounds crazy to me for countries to halt vaccinating on that basis. The risk from catching Covid is hundreds of times higher than that. I suspect that none of those cases are attributable to the vaccine. Even if they are were the risk is miniscule while the risk from covid is high. Doesn’t make sense.

The good news is that the cases are coming down in both the USA and UK. The most important thing being that the death-rates are tumbling due to the effect of the vaccine and so are the hospital cases. The vaccine is stopping the vulnerable from getting ill!

In Brazil the levels are still high and so is the death-rate. Bolsonaro is a fool.

In Vietnam and New Zealand there are still just the odd cases with nobody dying!

There are big lessons to be learnt!

We still have the opening up of the economy as we come out of lockdown and that will inevitably hit the antivaxxers who will have an increasing risk. I expect a lot of them to get severely ill and die.

For the rest of us who are vaccinated we can look ahead with confidence and book those holidays. All we have to do is not got to places where there are variants and look forward to a booster jab in the autumn.

I can’t wait for things to get back to normal!

Stay safe.

Peru – Inca ruins and terracing in the mountains

We went from a small town up into the mountains to explore some Inca ruins. I’ve no idea what they were called. The massive interlocking stones had been carved so precisely that they still looked pristine. You could see how they fitted together without needing mortar.
