Peru – A dance festival in a mountain village

We just happened to be passing through when a festival was taking place. The women, dressed in bright costume, were dancing in the square.

Peru – Inca ruins and terracing in the mountains

We went from a small town up into the mountains to explore some Inca ruins. I’ve no idea what they were called. The massive interlocking stones had been carved so precisely that they still looked pristine. You could see how they fitted together without needing mortar.

There are some other amazing Inca ruins around Peru. The buildings were made without mortar. They interlock – which makes them earthquake resistant! Amazing architecture!

It was amazing to see the women around the town dressed in traditional colourful costume. They had lambs, llamas and goats – all bait for tourists (like me)

It was interesting to go into the cathedral. It was full of religious art painted by local Peruvian artists. It looked very Catholic but the artists had insinuated paintings of the old religion subversively into the works of art.

I enjoyed that.

Peru – Into the Amazon Rainforest.

As we flew into the airfield we could see huge swathes of rainforest that has already been chopped down.

We boarded a boat and headed off down the river. All around us was thick rainforest full of bird cries, teeming with life.

These forests are the lungs of the world.

Peru – The Ballestas Islands – wildlife – Photos

The Ballestas Islands are a group of islands off the coast of Peru. They are a wildlife refuge, They are sometimes called the Galapagos of Peru.

On the way out on the boat we passed the ancient symbol in the desert sand known as the candelabra.

We met a guy who offered to take us to a largely unknown Inca ruins in the desert. It was quite amazing to wander through the site. It was amazing – yet deserted. Anywhere else in the world this would be a major historical site. Here, in Peru, it was merely abandoned.

Peru – A Festival of Dance and Music on an island in lake Titicaca – photos.

We were fortunate enough to arrive in the midst of a festival. The villagers, in colourful costumes, were singing and dancing (when they could manage to take time off from knitting).

Quite an amazing spectacle.

The Wonder of Machu Picchu – Photos

I can’t think of anywhere that has moved me as much as Machu Picchu. Stepping round that wall of rock to see it laid out in front of me was really breathtaking. A magnificent site.
