Lungs Of the World

The lungs of the world,

A reservoir of life,

Rich beyond belief.

A place of wonder,

A wealth of treasure

Being stolen by a thief.

We stand toothless as the forces of greed inexorably destroy the greatest treasure we have – the rainforest.

All over the world the great forests are being cleared. They are changed into plantations, small farms and grazing land.

The creatures that lived in these areas are killed.

The oxygen they put into our atmosphere is reduced.

The carbon they take out of the air is now free to warm the planet.

The soil is eroded.

We are all the poorer.

Such short-term stupidity.

Heading down the Amazon

I sat on the deck all day as the wonderful tropical rainforest slid past. We were in Brazil. This was the Amazon rainforest. The lungs of the world!!

I was in heaven, this is where I’d always dreamed of being. The home of more species than anywhere else!!

I couldn’t stop taking pictures.

The rainforest is the lungs of the world – a haven for a wealth of creatures.

But we are fast chopping it down.

Are we mad?

We are destroying our own life-support.

As we flew into the airfield we could see huge swathes of rainforest that has already been chopped down.

We boarded a boat and headed off down the river. All around us was thick rainforest full of bird cries, teeming with life.

These forests are the lungs of the world.
