Decisions – A Short Story

Decisions

Joe Biden stood at the window, frowning, hands clasped behind his back, eyes watching the anti-war demonstration in front of the Whitehouse, but brain not engaged. Deep in thought.

The Ukraine situation was delicately poised. One false move now could easily provoke World War Three. These decisions were all knife-edged. Should he have announced that they would not involve themselves militarily? Should he have refused to pass on those Polish planes or enforce a no-fly zone?

Putin had threatened a nuclear holocaust. Instead of a rapier thrust and installing of a puppet regime he had a war of attrition. The costs were enormous, not just in tanks, planes, roubles and soldiers, but in credibility. They were being humiliated. Russia was bankrupt – a pariah state.

Yet there was still that enormous nuclear arsenal and a cornered beast was at his most dangerous.

The switchboard woke him from his reverie. ‘I have Kamala here for you.’

‘Send her in.’

Kamala strode in looking tense and business-like. Without asking, she purposefully sat herself at the table.

Joe, seeing this was formal joined her, leaning forward, fingers interlaced. His blue eyes locked with her brown eyes and the unspoken question was written on his face. What was this about?

Kamala nervously ran her tongue over her lips, took a deep breath and steadied herself. ‘I’ve just come from a meeting with Lloyd Austin and Avril Haynes.’ She tensed, waiting for him to catch on. ‘Avril says they have finally achieved it.’ Her eyes were steady and piercing.

Joe slowly sat back into his seat and his hands slid into his lap. He knew what this was about.

‘This is it,’ Kamala said quietly.

‘Is she certain?’ He asked. ‘Every sub, every plane, every mobile launcher?’

She nodded, her eyes not leaving his.

‘Our operatives have successfully secreted a location device on every nuke the Russians have.’

Joe took a long deep breath. He could feel his heart racing. This was a moment that he had hoped would never come. His mind was clear.

‘Is she sure they will work?’

‘We’ve tested them repeatedly. When the satellites activate them they will work. We haven’t had a single failure.’

He required that reassurance. ‘What does Lloyd say?’

Kamala paused, pursed her lips and set her face in a stern mask. ‘Lloyd says we are ready to go. We have sufficient cruise missiles deployed to take them all out. We have a window of opportunity.’

Joe raised his hands to his chest, considered for a full minute.

He rose, walked the short distance to his desk and punched the intercom. ‘Call a full cabinet meeting. The war room. Now.’

They were all gathered. The room was full of conversation. All, apart from Lloyd Austin, Defence secretary, and Avril Haynes, Intelligence, were speculating on what this was about.

Kamala took her seat. Joe walked in with slow deliberate steps and placed his hands on the long table.

There was an expectant silence.

‘Will you be quiet please?’

Poetry – Bodies in the street

Bodies in the street

The last touch

                Before they left the universe;

The last touch

                Before they are gone forever,

Was the frozen hard ground.

Bodies abandoned

                In the street

                                With no-one to care,

No-one to provide that final embrace.

Left to freeze

                In the icy street

                                With no warmth

In those last seconds;

                No human touch

                                No final goodbye.

Opher – 13.3.2022

I wrote this in response to the scenes of Russian soldiers left strewn across a city street, abandoned and uncared for.

Their body heat seeps into the ground until they become frozen lifeless lumps of meat.

They, and the thousands of Ukrainian citizens and soldiers killed by the Russians, were disposed of in mass graves dug by machines.

Death has lost all humanity.

Today’s Music to keep me SsSsaaaaNNnneEe in Isolation – James Brown – Think!

I felt like I needed a bit of Funk to cheer me up as Putin slaughters people in Ukraine and builds a new Iron Curtain. It starts with Think!!

That seems appropriate as Putin tears apart Europe!

Poetry – The Future is Uncertain

The Future is Uncertain

The future is uncertain,

It hinges on a few men’s actions.

Tribal humanity has a tendency

To align itself in factions.

The truth is glimpsed through shuttered eyes –

                Only seen in fractions.

Our decisions are influenced by bias

                Geared to altering our reactions.

We are constantly manipulated

                And deflected with distractions.

News is a form of control.

What will those few men decide?

Whatever they choose

The repercussions are world-wide.

Different tribes

Conform to what view has been applied.

Opher – 12.3.2022

The reality is that the elite of the vying tribes decide what action to take. It’s a gamble, a game of power politics.

We are informed later.

They then use the might of the media to tell us what to think.

The product of their games is a world in which a small elite flourish while the majority fight for a reasonable standard of life and most fail.

War can be very profitable for some.

Misery is not even factored in.

A nuclear holocaust? A massive humanitarian crisis? A victory at any cost? Who pays the price?

Putin – Bitten off more than he can chew??

War – complete madness!!

Russian Assets and Tory Sleaze.

Putin gets Johnson off the hook!! Lying pays!!

The state we’re in!!

Dictators, populists and imbeciles!!

Poetry – Lavrov’s Lament

Lavrov’s Lament

We are not going to attack other countries.

That would be insane.

We’re not going to use nuclear weapons.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

We did not blow up a hospital.

That is very plain.

It was a military target.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

There is no such thing as war.

War goes against the grain.

We are deploying peacekeepers.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

Ukraine is run by neo-Nazis,

Causing Russian’s pain.

We are seeking to protect them.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

They want missiles on our borders

To soak us in nuclear rain.

We are seeking to protect ourselves.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

We’re not using Chernobyl as a threat.

Power stations will be maintained.

We’re searching for biological weapons.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

We’re not bombing civilian areas.

There are no civilians slain.

The Ukrainians are attacking themselves.

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

We’ve not sent death squads for Zelensky

We’re not looking to blow out his brain.

Though Zelensky practices genocide

We haven’t attacked Ukraine!

Opher – 10.3.2022

It was pathetic to hear Lavrov declaring that they had not invaded Ukraine. That is double-speak of the highest order. War is peace. Black is white. Madness.

It was sickening to hear Lavrov say that the bombing of the maternity hospital was a legitimate target.

It is ludicrous to shut of the power to nuclear power stations and use them as a pawn in their game. This is not a game; it is war.

The Russians do surely have legitimate fears. NATO expanding to their borders is a concern. War is not the answer. Pretending that somehow Ukraine is the aggressor is madness.

Has paranoia created a collective madness or is Lavrov just following Putin’s party line for his own safety?

Now they are systematically bombing civilian areas and denying it. They are ominously saying they are hunting for biological and chemical weapons. Is this a prelude to them using them as they did in Syria and Chechnia? Are they setting the groundwork for escalation?

Lavrov is either insane or Putin’s puppet!!

Bob Marley – War

This song is really about racism and equality but I thought it was appropriate during this time of war!!

Murder – Chris Riddell

Systematic attacks on civilians with missiles and artillery! It’s murder!!
