Singapore by night – photos

Cities have a totally different feel at night. Singapore was very beautiful.

Singapore – the Supertrees at night.

These supertrees, covered in epiphytes, were spectacular. In the daylight they were amazing but at night they were even better.

There was a surreal Sci-Fi quality to them. You could walk around among them and go up on to walkways through them.

Incredible.

Not at all sure about the dinosaurs.

Singapore – vestiges of the old colonial times in among the modern.

Walking through the city you can see vestiges of the old colonial buildings in among the modern. They are well preserved and cared for. The bold new Singapore seems to have accommodated its past.

Singapore – the amazing city.

In the mid 20th century Singapore was a run-down island full of slums, racial tension and poverty. In the second half of the 20th century, it transformed itself into an economic power (helped by its port and ability to trade).

Today it has been completely transformed. The slums are gone and a major building programme has transformed the place. It is pleasant to walk about and there is lots to see – including some architectural wonders – like the Marina Sands Bay hotel and the supertrees.

It still has some fairly quaint areas – though I would really have liked to have tasted the ‘colour’ and chaos of the old place. It has become a bit too touristy.

The incredible supertrees.

A show of affluence.

Into the city.

Singapore – walking through the streets – photos.

After searching for my Blue Cheese ice-cream in vain (I did same some on my last visit and it was strangely delicious). We set off wandering through the streets, past temples, street vendors, statues and crowded streets – back to the Buddhist temple.

Singapore – Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple – more Photos

I think these ceramics are amazing.

Isn’t this spectacular???

Singapore – from the Indian sector to the Islamic sector.

We walked from the Indian sector to the Muslim sector – from colourful umbrella art to mosques and the search for Danish Blue Cheese ice-cream.

Singapore – Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple -Photos

Being an atheist I love visiting the religious sites of other cultures and marvelling at the art, architecture and culture. Hinduism is so colourful and the people so friendly.

Singapore – The Indian Quarter – Photos

I love Singapore. The place feels so vibrant. We’ve been a number of times so we started off in the Indian quarter. It was so colourful!!

Oman – Blowholes, Friendly People, Armed Police, and goodbye to Salalah

Travelling around Salalah was interesting. There were no women. According to our driver the women were kept inside behind high walls. That’s disturbing.

We visited blowholes, got soaked, and then drove back to port.

Another disturbing feature was the checkpoints and armed (machine guns) military trucks. Why this degree of force? Terrorism? Unrest?

Goodbye Oman!
