“Full English Brexit”

My neighbours don’t drink at the local
Or have kippers for breakfast like me
The food that they eat smells disgusting
They’d rather drink coffee than tea

It’s true that their kids are respectful
They gave me their seat on the bus
But it’s just that there’s so many of them
That I fear what will become of us

I’m not racist, all I want is
To make things how they used to be
But change is strange and
Nobody’s listening to me

I cheered when our side won the Cold War
Spread freedom and peace all around
Now there’s folks speaking Russian in Tesco’s
It’s a shame the wall had to come down

I know some are fleeing from war zones
To keep their young children from harm
But my parents stayed put through the Blitz years
And me? I was sent to a farm

Yeah the sun shines, but sometimes
I don’t feel like this is my country
But to say so? Oh no
I never get no sympathy

Once we ruled over an empire
So it feels like some kind of defeat
To comply with rules drawn up by strangers
And measure in metres not feet

We don’t want to go but by Jingo
If we can’t be in charge, then we must
But don’t be offended, dear neighbour
It’s not you: this is all about us

But it’s alright, alright
I think I’ve found a remedy
Yes it’s alright, gonna be alright
It’s a full English Brexit for me

Billy takes on the persona of the confused older folk who can’t cope with the modern world with its pluralism.  They voted Brexit.
Sentimentality and nostalgia for a world that never was doesn’t build a better world!
It really shows the stupidity of Brexit.

‘Let me see,’ Tory man said, ‘if we cut the budgets for the schools, hospitals, prisons, councils, social services, armed forces, police, libraries, and probation services we’d have lots of loot. We could afford to cut taxes for the wealthy.’
‘But won’t that start to create problems?’ Other Tory man asked.
‘Only for the poor!’ Tory man snorted scornfully.
‘But they all have votes,’ Other Tory man pointed out in a worried voice. ‘They could vote us out.’
‘Not if we play our cards right,’ Tory man chortled. ‘We’ll blame it on the EU and create a smokescreen of Brexit! We’ll tell them that Labour managed it badly and we have to live within our means.’
‘Will that work?’ Other Tory man asked dubiously.
‘Of course it will work!’ Tory man declared. ‘Besides, we own the media. We can tell them what to believe!’
So, the vice tightened on those at the bottom. The homeless numbers soared and the food banks opened. The desperate turned to crime and the crime rate soared. The schools were struggling and kicked out the troublesome. The youth clubs shut and the gangs were welcoming. There were not enough police to keep on top of it and the courts were not functioning. The army was no longer an option. Zero hours contracts on low pay offered no careers when drug money bought you a Porsche in a matter of months. But you had to defend your patch with a machete and life was cheap. An underfunded NHS tried to stitch up the victims.
And for those at the top, for whom tax is optional, life has never been as good. They took their loot off-shore to stash it safely away.
And Brexit rages away and those at the bottom blame it all on the EU.

Who needs it?

 

Who needs holidays

When you’re grafting for the US dollar?

Who needs a fair wage

When Trump’s got you by the collar?

 

Who cares about the climate

If there’s money to be made?

Who cares about the birds and bees

When the profit plans are laid?

 

Who needs the EU

Just twenty miles away?

We can sell our goods to the rest of the world

And make it pay!

 

What’s a few thousand miles

To transport our goods

Letting Trump orchestrate a deal

Will get us out of the woods.

 

So get Brexit done

Even if it ruins the nation!

It’ll make the rich even richer

Now there’s a sensation!

You can guarantee that it’s all about the money. Some people, like Rees-Mogg, are going to make a killing.

When are we going to get sensible answers? A second referendum!

I just wish people were not so goddam stupid. They do not seem to realise what is going on at all.

An extreme right-wing element forced Cameron (stupidly) to call a referendum which they narrowly won through a campaign of LIES LIES LIES.

This extreme group has tried to foist a hard Brexit on Britain for their own narrow benefit. (Some stand to make millions out of this – including people like Rees-Mogg).

The majority of MPs know that leaving without a deal will be extremely damaging for the country (about 10% of GDP – worse than the crash which resulted in a decade of austerity) and will hit the poorest most.

This extreme group has tried to foist a hard deal on Britain. A deal that breaks us away economically from our neighbours and cosies us up to the USA.  This would still hit the UK hard (about 5% of GDP) and hit the poorest communities. It would open Britain up to predatory US companies. The NHS will be the first to be gobbled up.

MPs have been standing up for their constituents (and being vilified in the process). They do not want to see the jobs go and everyone made a lot poorer. They do not want to see Trump leading a charge to bleed us dry and take over the NHS. They do not want to see the poor being sacrificed so that the wealthy can make even more money.

By far the best option is to stay within the EU. But failing that we need a soft Brexit – just like the Labour Party has been proposing. A Brexit where we stay in the Customs Union and Single Market but break away from the political side of the EU. We would have our sovereignty (for what that’s worth – being ruled by a bunch of self-serving Eton toffs is not my idea of sovereignty).

A soft Brexit option is not as good as staying in but it does not devastate the country. It has never been presented to parliament. If it were I think a majority of the MPs would vote for it and we would have put an end to all this bitterness, division and wrangling.

We are being lied to!!

By rejecting these had Brexit deals MPs are supporting their constituents. I reckon they are doing a great job in the face of extreme stupidity, greed and hostility.

The majority of the country want to stay in the EU. All the polls indicate that.

We should have another referendum and put a stop to this nonsense.

Failing that we should have a soft Brexit and do the least amount of damage.

We are being sold down the river by a bunch of self-serving Tory extremists!!!

This latest Brexit deal will water down workers’ rights, water down environmental standards and produce a race to the bottom. It will make more profits for the wealthy and turn the British people into slaves. It will allow predatory American companies to exploit us. It will swamp us with nasty American food and products that do not meet our safety standards.

This is not a future I want for my grandchildren.

If we do a deal Brexit will rumble along for another decade. It will only be the start of the negotiations.

I say – pull the plug on Brexit now. It has already cost us a fortune (How many Billions wasted?). It is extremely damaging for the country.

Let’s have a second referendum!!!

Failing that – present a soft Brexit to parliament and let’s get it done with the least harm.

 

 

Brexit – Heseltine and Democracy.

Who would imagine that I’d be lauding a speech by Michael Heseltine! How times change!

But Heseltine is right. We are fighting for the future of our nation, for its influence in the world, for its prosperity. It is either in with Europe, with collaboration, partnership and economic stability, or it is out in the doldrums with no power, no cash, and a bunch of extreme nationalists calling the shots.

These nationalist idiots are taking us for a ride. They stand to make millions out of this. They don’t care if they leave misery in their wake.

This is the future of our nation. We can’t allow Dominic Cummings and millionaires like Rees-Mogg to set the agenda.

Democracy is about voting. Here’s what Heseltine says:

“We believe that only the British people are entitled to take the most important decision of modern times.

We are fighting for British influence in a fast changing world. We are fighting to give our children and grandchildren their place in that world.

There is only one argument that really drives their opposition to a referendum: they think they will lose it.

You have come from all over the country. From all parties and none. All generations, every class and creed. You’re British and proud of it.

We have helped to create a Europe of peace. A Europe where national pride and loyalty can be pooled in a shrinking world to enhance the power and influence of us all.

In coming today you are marching into history.

Do not lower your sights. Do not avert your gaze.

Look straight. Look up.
