Sri Lanka – Colombo – Buddhist Temple Gangaramaya – The room of Buddhas

There was something quite amazing – to find this room of Buddhas.

Sri Lanka – Colombo – Buddhist Temple Gangaramaya – more photos

The temple was huge with so much to see. You could spend a whole day there and still not see everything.

Some of the art was incredible.

Sri Lanka – Colombo – Buddhist Temple Gangaramaya – Elephants

Elephants seemed to be venerated. It seemed strange to me. Inside the temple there was a big Elephants head and huge stuffed elephant.

Outside, in a tiny pen, they had a young elephant chained up so that it could hardly move. It seemed a very unbuddhist type of thing to do.

The poor elephant looked half-crazed and was exhibiting all manner of disturbed behaviour.

Sri Lanka – Colombo – Buddhist Temple Gangaramaya

Our next port of call was the Buddhist temple of Gangaramaya.

Outside the florists sold their flowers as offerings.

Inside it was like a museum of porcelain Buddhas.

The wood carvings on the panelling were delightful.

The monks were very friendly.

Like most Buddhist temples, it had a serene feel to it – though this was far busier than many I have been to.

Sri Lanka – Colombo – The Hindu Temple

I do love the grand colour, art and statues, the ceramic beauty, of Hindu temples. They are very artistic and distinctive. Religion might leave me cold but the sheer splendour of religious buildings and art is thrilling.

Sri Lanka – Some shots from around Colombo – people and buildings.

We spent a little time walking around Colombo. The people were very colourful and friendly. The old buildings were sometimes rather delapidated.

Sri Lanka is often called the pearl in the ocean or teardrop of India.

This is what happens when you have a crease in your plans.

Colonial past.

Sri Lankan Fruit Bats – Photos

One of the great things about the Far East is Fruit Bats. I love them. Hanging about and flying around. Great colonies of Fruit Bats live in the cities. At dusk they take to the air in large numbers. A great sight.

We came upon a few trees packed with Fruit Bats in the middle of the park.

They’re big!!

Sambodhi Chaithya – Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple

As soon as you hit Colombo you see it. It dominates the skyline and is so unusual that you are not at first sure what it can be. It is Sambodhi Chaithya the Buddhist Temple.

It is up in the air. You have to climb up a lot of stairs to get into the place.

We went up at sunset to get a view over the sea and city. The murals were really interesting too.

Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil Temple – Colombo – Sri Lanka

I do love the bright gaudy colours and intricate statues of Hindu temples. They are very ornate and impressive.

I thought it would be nice to share a few photos from this magnificent temple.

Elaborately carved wood panels from the life of the Buddha.

A collection of porcelain and statues that created a feel that was more like a museum than a temple

Lavishly decorated ceilings, doors and walls.
