New Book – Sorting the Future – a Sci-Fi tale of great imagination

Sorting the future

This tells the story of how Opher Goodwin was selected by aliens to save the world.
The visitors from afar had scoured the universe in search of life and intelligence. They found it on a planet called Earth, where, unfortunately, the dominant life form was trying it’s best to wipe itself – and everything else – out.
The aliens set about selecting a saviour and installing him as Global President. They chose the unlikely hero Opher Goodwin.
Opher and his friends from the pub had all of the immense problems of the world on their shoulders plus the vicious opposition of the existing establishment. Against such odds – could they possibly succeed? What was it that made Opher the chosen one?

It is a pacey read that you can’t put down – full of humour and outrageous antics with an important message behind it. What more could you want?

Why not try an Opher book right now?

Sorting the future

Chapter 1 – Walking the dog

It was one of those perfect English summer evenings. The type of evening that topped off a day that was so absolutely impeccable that you knew you wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world but England. It made you forget all those other cold, rainy days of numbing dreariness that preceded it. This day was sublime. The sun was setting; a warm breeze shook the leaves. The lush green fields had crisped in the summer sun to form swathes of long dry grass, punctuated with bright meadow flowers, ruddy with the glow of that slowly descending ball of fire that was the summer sun. All was right with this part of the world.

Sam, my black and white border collie, was off the lead as I walked him down the dusty, deserted back track that straggled across those fields. There were no sheep in the hay meadows for him to worry, and the cows had been brought in long ago, so he was safe to bound around as free as a breeze, futilely chasing rabbits and startling the odd pheasant into flight. He was inept at hunting but loved the chase. He’d only ever caught one rabbit in his entire life, and that was a young one, and it had so surprised him to have run it down that he had not known what to do with it. He’d brought it back to me with a look of complete puzzlement and gently passed it over into my hands. I could see that he was glad to have the decision of what to do with it taken away from him. I had lightly held the terrified creature, an immature doe. It appeared uninjured but I could feel that young rabbit’s little heart beating like a little motor in its chest. Sam had held it so softly in his mouth but still it must still have been the most alarming experience any rabbit can imagine. I held Sam’s collar while I let that rabbit free. We both watched it scurry away into the undergrowth to live another day. Sam had a wistful expression on his face. I’m not sure he was totally in agreement with what I had done. All that effort for nothing. Dogs are so transparent.

I ambled along, hands deep in pockets, whistling to myself. I like to whistle. Nobody else does these days. It seems to have gone out of fashion. Once, everybody whistled. It was the sound of happiness. I was enjoying watching Sam bouncing through the long grass like some furry black and white porpoise. HIs enjoyment was infectious. He always made me feel happy. So I whistled.

Sam was fearless and loyal. He was one of those dogs who would protect you from anything. He’d give his life for you without a thought. If a grizzly bear were to come out of the woods Sam would stand his ground between me and it. He’d growl and bare his teeth and die trying to protect me. He was my dog – utterly fearless and loyal.

Fortunately there were no grizzly bears in Yorkshire. The worst you could do in these parts was to stub your toe on a hedgehog.

As Sam came springing back towards me I strolled further up the lane between two high Hawthorne hedges and he raced up to join me, panting from his exertions, long pink tongue lolling out of his mouth and dripping with saliva. There was a happy spark in his eyes. You’d swear he was grinning.

We strolled up the lane side by side. There was a gap in the hedge which is when we both simultaneously saw it. It caused us to both freeze in our footsteps. My whistling froze on my lips.

We stood as if held in a spell, in incredulity, peering into the field like idiots. Sam recognised that this was something out of the ordinary and certainly out of his experience. He instantly came to the conclusion that anything that strange was potentially very dangerous. This definitely was outside his compass of responsibility. He turned tail and streaked back home leaving me standing there on my own, gawping.

Perhaps I should have followed suit and raced after Sam; or at least slowly backed away, or some such thing. I didn’t.

I didn’t budge. I stood and stared.

And that is how I came to be President of the World.

Chapter 18 – The pub

Sunday at the Blue Post had a slightly different feel to it. There was a sense of triumph mingled in with total disbelief. It had drawn all the girls and guys into one big group feeding off each other’s incredulity.

‘Did you see that?’ Pete chortled. ‘That was old Oph wasn’t it?’

‘It sure was,’ Chris agreed, shaking his head in disbelief. ‘He just looked so different. So young and cool. What has happened to him?’

‘I don’t know but I could fancy him,’ Jill said, flashing Clive a grin and raising the glass of iced white wine to her lips for a sensuous sip. ‘Made you podgy lot look a bit sad. Why can’t you all get into some fitness thing and look like that?’

‘And he sounded so good,’ Gary stated, rapidly changing the subject away from the dreaded exercise and fitness mantra. ‘He spoke so well. I haven’t heard him speak quite like that before. He was so good.’

They all nodded.

‘I can’t believe how he did that,’ Pete said frowning into his glass of ale. ‘But it was him wasn’t it?’

‘It certainly was,’ Gary enthused. ‘He was pulling together all the stuff we’ve been talking about over the years.’

All the guys took a swig of their beer and looked pleased with themselves while the girls sipped their drinks and smiled wistfully wondering if their guys could ever look as good as Opher had. They could not believe what they had seen. Oph had gone missing and suddenly popped up out of nowhere, looking a million dollars and beamed out across the globe addressing the United Nations. It was bizarre.

‘He spoke to the whole United Nations,’ Gary beamed, ‘and he told them exactly what needed doing, just like we’ve all been talking about. And he made it sound so believable and easy. It was great.’

They supped some more.

‘I can’t believe that was really Oph,’ Pete said. ‘He looked so young and fit and he sounded brilliant. I’ve never heard anyone speak that well. He was better than Churchill. What is going on?’

Everyone shook their heads in wonderment. It was beyond them.

‘It might have sounded brilliant,’ Ruth noted, with a warning of caution in her voice, ‘but I suspect it is going to take a lot more than one speech from Opher Goodwin to straighten the world out. They are not going to listen to him. They’ve got their own agendas.’

‘Well I can’t help wondering how he came to look as good as that,’ Jill said. ‘It takes a lot more than a bit of make-up to do something like that. He looked amazing. He’s only been gone a week or so. No amount of gym-work can make that difference in that time-span.’

They all agreed.

‘And a week ago we were out looking in ditches for him,’ Chris noted.

‘And the police were dredging the canal,’ Gary chipped in.

‘Poor Liz and the kids were distraught,’ Chris added, frowning deeply into his glass. ‘What the hell has been going on? How has he transformed into that in such a short time? Where has he been?’

‘I know,’ Carol added, ‘I saw them in there with the frogmen. Poor Liz was beside herself, and those poor kids…………’

Mandy nodded. ‘She told me she was off to meet Opher. I’ve still got the dog.’

‘Who cares,’ Pete said, defiantly. ‘If he can talk and project himself like that he could be President of the planet. He really could sort the mess out and get things working properly. He was that good. He could do it.’

They all beamed round at each other, all except Brian.

‘They’ll crucify him,’ Brian growled. ‘You wait and see. They’ll bloody crucify him.’

I am waiting for the paperback version to be released.

Chapter 17 – The imperative

It did not take long for the hierarchy to collect themselves. They had been knocked for six and did not know how to handle what had happened to them. They could not grasp what had occurred. One minute they had been sitting in their normal meetings, going through the motions like always, and the next moment they were blown asunder by some idiot, appearing out of nowhere, declaring himself future President of the planet and haranguing them about a whole slew of insane ideas.

How was this possible? This imbecile had somehow been beamed in proclaiming himself the self-appointed President of the planet and nobody seemed to have a clue as to how. Was it some kind of stunt? They could not even understand their own reactions; it was as if they had been held in some thrall while the imbecile had spouted at them with some utopian crap. And they had been unable to move, security had been powerless. It had been unbelievable. They eventually put it down to the sheer shock of the unexpected. What else could it have been?

The worst thing of all was that the whole business had gone out on all TV channels live. How the hell had that happened? There had to be some colossal collusion. Heads would fall. All that drivel about doing away with nations and religions, demilitarising, global government and protecting the environment. It was all idealistic claptrap but it could unsettle the people. He had spoken so well. It did not matter how eloquent this Opher Goodwin was, what he was spouting was rubbish. That kind of thing was plain dangerous.

The security branch did a thorough investigation but they came up with a blank. They could not understand how it could possibly have happened. They had no doubt that it was some conspiracy. The Opher Goodwin appearing in the midst of two of the world’s most secure committees. There was simply no way he could have done that in person. It had to have been some holographic projection. He had to have a system to take over the networks like that. They would need rooting out. But how he had held them all like that was a mystery. They had been unable to as much as blink. How had he managed that? It was not merely unsettling; it was positively scary. What if the guy had brought a bomb into the place? Nowhere was safe.

For a while the place was in uproar. Delegates were scurrying back to the safety of their embassies. Security staff were turning over every already turned stone. There was pandemonium. The United Nations was immobilised.

Then they started getting organised. Agencies were given their orders. They had to find all they could on this Opher Goodwin; the fools who had put that show out on the networks needed castrating; what hypnotic methodology had been deployed to turn them into motionless mannequins; why security had been so powerless needed investigating. The machine set into motion. But priority one was to deal with the public. That transmission had gone into homes around the world. That Opher Goodwin had spoken with eloquence and authority. It might have been idealistic hot-air but to many it might have seemed to make sense. They could not be having that. He had to be undermined and his claptrap ridiculed before it could begin to take hold. That was the imperative.

Meanwhile life went on as normal. The missiles and bullets thudded into buildings and bodies, bombs blew human tissue into mincemeat, chainsaws sawed through majestic giants which had stood for hundreds of years, wild animals were butchered, habitats destroyed, mines ripped holes in the land, smog hung over cities, millions of new babies were born to maintain the machine, poverty dragged people into the sewage and some people made an absolute killing on the stock market and on all those clandestine deals.

The whole mess continued on its relentless journey into an ever growing nightmare.

We felt that the fast flow of the book was paramount. That it was essential to keep it as a light and speedy read.

I think it works!!  I am also getting a great number of positive responses. People are greatly enjoying it.

New novel – Sorting the Future – Chapter 16 – The United Nations

IMG_6503

Chapter 16 – The United Nations

Somehow I had enjoyed myself. Who would have believed that I would have stood up before a huge assembly of all the heads of all the nations on the planet, on prime-time TV to boot, talked off the cuff for ages, and actually enjoyed doing it?

I don’t know how they had done it but the aliens had beamed me in. First I had addressed the small assembly of the inner Security Council. It was effectively the G16 – the sixteen most powerful nations on earth who met to discuss the future security of the planet. Not that they ever did anything other than castigate each other and push their own narrow interests to the fore. It was about time they did something.

All my apprehensions were ungrounded. I was neither arrested nor shot, and I shone – even if I say it myself. I strode the stage like a master and delivered my speech with passion in faultless English and perfect diction. I do not believe anyone had ever displayed such panache. And I was daring and forthright. I did not mince my words. I told it like it was. I talked of dismantling the financial institutions, doing away with the current political systems, and dealing with corruption, leaving fifty percent of the planet for us and fifty as conserved wilderness and reducing the population. I didn’t leave much out.

Throughout it all the security guards seemed completely powerless. The aliens had them held in some kind of stasis. They did not as much as move a muscle.

Likewise the members of the Security Council – they listened. They did not shout or walk out. They gave me their undivided attention and hung on my every word. Or so it seemed.

I spoke so well. I was eloquent, concise and full of conviction as I laid out my plan, explained who I was and told them what needed doing.

They never took their eyes off me.

I knew that this wasn’t merely my new-found skills that were dazzling them. This was the aliens at work. They had organised my entrance and audience. They were ensuring my audience paid attention.

The general assembly was a repeat on a far bigger scale. This time I knew the TV channels were recording it. That didn’t put me off in the slightest. If anything I played up to it. I was in my element. My new highly powered brain was as clear as could be; the words dropped into place. I spoke with authority and passion. I gave all the right emphasis. It was a masterly performance and I knew it. The aliens had surpassed themselves. I surpassed myself.

I gave them a concise picture of what needed doing. I started with the need to end all war and conflict, the doing away of outmoded institutions such as nations and religions; the desperate need to stop the environmental destruction, the deforestation, slaughter of wild-life and pollution. I talked about running the world globally, reducing the population, putting aside fifty percent of the planet for humans and conserving fifty percent as pristine wilderness. I talked about setting up a single monetary system and creating greater equality, education, welfare and ending all forms of discrimination. I talked about demilitarisation, freedom, streamlining government, human rights and every idealistic notion that had ever been kicked around the Sunday Blue Post club. Everything Pete, Jill, Clive, Mandy, John, Chris and all the rest of us had ruefully talked about. We had all the answers and now I had the platform to do something about it. I wasn’t about to compromise on any of it. I let them have it straight between the eyes.

In fact I pulled together all the things that we had been talking about in that pub over the years and collected it all together into one coherent vision. It was a vision that shone.

I knew it made sense. I had an IQ that was greater than the combined IQ of all the members of that assembly. All the things we’d discussed slotted into place. We hadn’t been talking bollocks after all.

I ended by giving them a clear vision of what the future world would look like. It was a paradise compared to the nightmare they were busily constructing.

They did not interrupt or argue. I had their undivided attention. I knew that wasn’t just my brilliance and that I had the aliens to thank for that but I liked to think that I was so good they would have listened anyway.

But then I was a realist. Unfortunately I knew that I did not have the hearts and minds of that assembly. I could see it in their blank expressions. They were not bowled over by the lucidity of my argument or view of a gleaming future and never would be. They listened because they were being forced to. They were selfish and greedy with their own vested interests, views, and ingrained attitudes. It was going to take more than one magnificent speech to bring them on board. I knew they would fight me tooth and nail. You can drag a stallion to the trough but he’ll die of thirst before he’ll submit to your will if he’s got a mind to. These men and women were seasoned politicians. They had risen to power through the usual methods of bribery, lies and back stabbing and they weren’t about to give up their power just because some unknown idiot popped up with something that made sense. They saw nothing in it for themselves and that was the only criterion of importance in their universe.

I might proclaim myself President of the planet but actually being recognised as such was a different matter altogether. I knew the aliens and I had our work cut out. This was just a shot across the bows.

Right now I had bigger things to think about. I had kept my side of the bargain. It was time to sort out things with Liz and the kids.
