Quote 7 – Woody Guthrie – This machine kills fascists

Woody Guthrie rambled round in the thirties, forties and fifties in America. He travelled with black and white alike. He stood for fairness and justice. He stood on picket lines with working men striking for a fair wage and fair treatment. He opposed injustice, racism, sexism and elitism.

He wrote songs like nobody had ever heard before.

The quote I am going to give from him is the one he painted on his guitar –

‘This machine kills fascists’

Woody Guthrie

It is a simple concept for a complex issue. He was saying that you do not destroy poisonous ideology like fascism and fundamentalism with guns – you destroy them with music, with words, with education. You change the minds not blow up the bodies.

That has informed my life.

Music is a powerful tool for changing people’s minds and awakening their humanity and love of their fellow men and women. The guitar was Woody’s weapon and a powerful one it was too.

Education is the other tool.

We won’t defeat ISIS on the battlefield alone – we need to educate the fools who believe in violence.

I nominate the following people;

Mary is into the environment with beautiful photos. I’m sure she could come up with a quote or two.

Quote number 4 – Bob Dylan – It’s Alright Ma – I’m only bleeding

51GXVbm-F7L__AA160_

Once again this is quite a long quote of a poem/lyric that is one of Bob’s best – but then he was covering a lot of ground in this diatribe of vitriolic social comment.

It was written in the sixties but still is relevant today.

Look at the themes of hypocrisy, understanding life, impotency in the face of the establishment, religion, education, lies, the rat-race, politics and how to ignore all the pretence and senselessness of modern life.

The opening stanza itself is a poem – life and death and trying to understand what is going on – there is no sense in trying – it is beyond human understanding. The light of life can be snuffed out in an instant by a knife. The light of the sun blotted out by a balloon. Life is fleeting and the darkness comes quick.

The imagery is dense.

This quote is full of quotes – (he not busy being born is busy dying) (Don’t hate nothing at all except hatred) (it’s easy to see without looking too far that nothing much is really sacred) (I got nothing ma, to live up to) (who despise their jobs, their destiny) (meanwhile life goes on all around you)

The whole poem is a mess of quotes. I think I’ve fulfilled my challenge fifty times over.

Bob Dylan was a genius. I think he got caught up in the machine and it nearly killed him. He reined in his talent.

I urge everyong to go back to those early sixties albums, dig ’em out – they are full of mind blowing gems of social comment and thought. The man is a genius.

If you try to take the establishment on you end up getting injured badly. But it’s alright ma – I’m only bleeding.

Here’s a sort quote:

‘Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon, there is no sense in trying

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words proves to warn
That he not busy being born is busy dying

Temptation’s page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover that you’d just be one more person crying

So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don’t hate nothing at all, except hatred

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far that not much is really sacred

Our preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the President of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

An’ all the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge
And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you’re the one
That can do what’s never been done
That can win what’s never been won
Meantime life outside goes on all around you

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks they really found you

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it that you belong to

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Do what they do just to be
Nothing more than something they invest in

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize and say, “God bless him”

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society’s pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole that he’s in

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares propaganda, all is phony

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes must get lonely

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False goals, I scuff at pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say, “Okay, I have had enough, what else can you show me?”

And if my thought dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine
But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only’

Quote Challenge – Quran – Humanity is but a single Brotherhood: So make peace with your Brethren.

Thank you Shreya for challenging me with providing three quotes a day.

I do not usually like doing challenges or awards but this one quite appealed.

I shall quite enjoy sorting out three quotes a day.

I’m not sure about nominating other bloggers. I’ll have a think.

I’ve got to be sure they’d want to do it. It is a bit of a faff. Particularly if you are busy.

This is Shreya’s blog site – https://shreyasharmasite.wordpress.com/2016/04/25/quote-challenge-day-2/#respond – so check that one out.

This is the first of my quotes for today:

If only religions selected the nice stuff from the texts we wouldn’t have a problem. Unfortunately they select the texts to support their own psychopathic urges, power madness and cruelty.

In my view making peace with your brethren (and I would include women) does not include throwing them off high buildings, burying them alive, make them sex slaves, gang raping, beheading them, crucifying them, burning them alive, drowning them, blowing their heads off with explosives, hacking them with machetes, slowly crushing them with rocks or all the other barbaric practices favoured by ISIS, Boko Haram, A Qaeda, Taliban or other fundamentalist groups.

You can twist religion to suit your power-mad games.

The Prophet said – Make Peace with your Brethren!

Might be an idea for people who believe to take note of him.

John Lennon quote

‘Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans’.

That seems to sum it up. Life is unpredictable. Just when you think you have got things planned out along comes life and messes it all up.

Nothing is forever.
