The Corona Diaries – Day 281

Today is a day of contrasts. I walked up my hill in a blaze of sunlight. It looked and felt like spring. Yesterday’s frost had melted. The road was no longer icy. One of the red kites was perching in the trees at the bottom of the hill. He observed me approaching and took flight, gliding low across the field. Later, at the top of the hill, he flew close overhead and I was able to watch him with admiration.

At the top of the hill I looked to the right, towards the sea, to note that there was a great swathe of dark cloud with streaks of rain stretching to the ground. On the coast, there was a substantial downpour. To my left, towards Driffield, there was another bank of heavy cloud. I was in the middle of a wide corridor of sun and blue sky.

I walked down the other side and on to the sodden grass.

Climbing back up the hill I noted that the clouds over the coast, contrary to the direction of the light wind, were heading my way. It rapidly became dark and gloomy and I descended in wintry drizzle.

As I approached the bottom of the hill there were a series of loud bangs and I realised that there was some shooting going on. I soon identified the source. I stood to watch. Out in the field there were a lined of ten guns, all dressed in their brown tweed, To the side were four men with dogs. There was an island of trees and vegetation in the middle of the field and I could see ten beaters with their clapper boards yelling and beating through the undergrowth. Every now and then a bevy of frightened pheasants would take to the sky. The guns would be raised followed by a series of bangs and the birds would drop like stones.

I contemplated this for a while.

It was apparent to me that the whole landscape was a product of this ‘hunt’. Without it those copses of trees would have been chopped down long ago. The only reason any natural vestiges remained was for this very purpose.

Those ten guns came from privileged classes. They even travelled from abroad. They were guests of landed gentry and paid hansomely for the privilege of standing in a muddy field to take potshots at sitting ducks.

Gamekeepers were employed to breed and care for the millions of pheasants and grouse. The land was carefully managed and ‘vermin’ like foxes, stoats and my elegant red kites, were also ‘managed’.

The beaters were also paid as were the dog trainers.

This was a ‘country sport’ a pastime of the elite. They did not even want the birds they shot.

How much money was tied up in this unpleasant activity?

How very pointlessly unpleasant.

Back home I played some Talking Heads and did some editing.

Meanwhile, out in Coronaland things are going mad. The hospitals are becoming overwhelmed. The front-line medical staff, who have had no Christmas break, are exhausted, and they know that the fruit of Christmas and New Year mingling is yet to come.

The cases in the USA, UK and Brazil have shot up again. The hospitals are already overwhelmed. The death rates are climbing! Oh to be in New Zealand or Vietnam with better governments and clearer strategies, where the Covid-19 rates are in single figures and nobody dies!

the government is panicking and dithering again as the scientists warn of catastrophe.

It looks like we are moving to a stringent lockdown even as we begining to roll out the vaccine!

Already they are talking of closing schools again! At the same time they are talking about deploying troops to schools to handle the mass testing. Thoughh how that can be properly, and safely, carried out is a mystery.

I don’t think this government has a clue! They say the first thing that comes into their heads without thinking through the logistics!!

Bunch of twats and morons!

There is talk of a new Tier 5! Soon they’ll have the army on the streets shooting people!

The new variant is taking over and seems much more contagious.

The only good news is that the vaccine is being deployed quite fast, with a high uptake and no serious side-effects. The Oxford vaccine is likely to be available very soon as well. All vaccines seem to be effective against the new strains – though there are concerns that future mutations might make the virus immune to the vaccine. However, even then, we are assured that the new vaccines are easy to tweak!

It would be such a shame to go down with the disease so close to receiving the vaccination!!

Stay safe!! Herd immunity is on its way!!

The Corona Diaries – Day 278

Back to an empty house today – just the two of us. Feels strange. It’s been a strange Christmas. Very quiet. We normally have a house bursting with kids, presents amd people, with the odd dog thrown in. Not this year.

After our son had gone we went for a walk up our hill. It was grey and cloudy but it felt quite warm The storm will be coming through later tonight.

I think tonight will be time to unwind and watch some telly. The Man In The High Castle is getting interesting.

We’ve got the wood piled up and the log burner loaded. I think we’re battening down the hatches for a couple of months. Once winter is over and the vaccine is here we will feel free!!

Out in Coronaland the families have been gathering for Christmas, a number defying laws, and carrying the virus from place to place. If the new strain was not spread far and wide it is now. We’ll no doubt watch the tally take off in January!

It seems that the South African strain is causing concerns too. It’s attacking young people and making them very ill. That will create a real change in attitudes. It could have big implications for both schools and universities!

Today most of the country came out of a Christmas relaxation straight into lockdown! We’ll see what happens next. Our invisible clown of a leader seems incapable of either decision-making or leading. At the moment he’s basking in the aftermath of having achieved a Brexit deal. That will soon pass. Once the impact of Brexit hits home people will find that even with a deal the outcome is pretty grim. A nincompoop can’t change his spots.

The Christmas bonus is that the rates of new cases have gone down in the USA, UK and Brazil. That’s great. Or is that merely that Christmas has impacted on the number tested? We’ll see.

It can’t go down in places like Vietnam and New Zealand. When you’re on next to zero it’s hard to improve.

We’re still waiting to see what damage Trump can do in his last days. He’s desperately trying to open up new contracts so the environment can be further trashed and trying to have half the prison population executed.

Whatever, the new year brings vaccines, an end to Brexit and the end of Trump. Labour have gone ahead in the polls. People are finally waking up.

I’m looking forward to it!!

All the best – Stay safe!!

The Corona Diaries – Day 277

We still haven’t had any symptoms and are still avoiding risks!

Today was Christmas day. There was a sprinkling of snow and the bins were frozen solid. I had to prise them apart to put the rubbish in.

It was one of those cold, crisp mornings with the sun shining. We went for a walk to Bridlington along the cliffs!

Out in Coronaland, all over the country, people are gathering to spread the virus! There is a huge endeavour to take the new strain to all regions of the realm! It’s the pagan festival of consumerism! It’s usually good to give – though on this occasion it might be better not to!

The USA is still hovering around the 200,000 new cases with 3000 deaths a day while we’re hovering around the 40,000 new cases with 600 deaths. If it wasn’t for Brazil outdoing us with ineptitude – 58,428 new cases with nearly 800 deaths, we’d be looking really bad! Meanwhile Vietnam and New Zealand have no deaths at all!

What this means is that the virus has a huge base to work from in the USA, UK and Brazil. Christmas plays into its hands. I’m expecting a huge surge following Christmas with a whole glut of deaths in mid January!!

Bring out the dead!!

We should all do what the pagans used to do and hold big gatherings around the stone circles – outside! Worship the sun and nature! They knew what they were doing.

Gathering inside is not a good idea!

So Merry Christmas!! Enjoy your meal. Raise a toast! Share your gifts but not your virus!

Stay safe!!

The Corona Diaries – Day 276

It was sleet, cold, wet sleet. Three degrees. Not nice. I’m putting off my walk until later. I shall sit here and read and quietly contemplate the madness of my distant ancestors for wanting to leave the warmth of Africa. The only conclusion I can come to is that they were driven out by the spiders.

I’m reading backpacker by John Harris – It’s set in Thailand. I can feel the warmth.

We’re in a bubble. Just the three of us. My youngest son. He’s teaching us poker. We’re not very good. Later my middle son is popping over and we’re going for a walk up the hill. The sun is meant to be coming out but the temperature will still only be a heady four degrees.

Roll on summer.

I haven’t got covid but I do have a cold – blocked up and sniffly. As we are in isolation one is left to wonder how I’ve picked this up.

Meanwhile, out in Coronaland our clown has managed to pull off some kind of deal with Europe. It remains to be seen how good that will be. I’m despondent about the whole thing. We’ve lost so much. I feel sorry for my grandchildren whose opportunities are diminished. Never mind. I will not dwell.

The continent have lifted their blockade and the lorries are moving. We’ll see how Brexit goes. I’m looking forward to the immense cost and added red-tape.

Our new strain of virus seems to be going mad. The latest thoughts are, of course, that it came in from abroad. Then we have this other South African strain.

I’m hoping the scientists are right and the vaccine will still be effective. The quicker the better.

It’s not looking good here. We are in severe lockdown and the numbers are still going up – another 39,237 cases yesterday and the death-rate is through the roof with 744. This virus loves winter! Fresh air is its enemy.

It’s worse in the USA – another 227,750 cases yesterday and 3411 deaths.

We’ve become used to these numbers but they are quite chilling. Three and a half thousand people died of covid in the States yesterday. Think of the impact on families.

Places like Vietnam and New Zealand must be shaking their heads at our ineptitude. How have they got it so right (no new cases and no deaths) while we’ve got it so wrong????

I think I know the answer – we elect populist clowns and narcissists!!

When will we ever learn? When will we ever learn??

Stay Safe! The end is not yet nigh.

The Corona Diaries – Day 274

I can feel the days drawing out! At least the sun was shining – a bit different to yesterdays. I took a walk down a muddy lane. The fields were waterlogged already. I reckon they’ll be well flooded in the next month or two. I think, with the changing climate, we are due to have very wet winters and dry summers. We’ll see.

We’re into the festive lethargy.

I’m presently in a bubble with my youngest son for the Christmas period. We’re talking, playing music and poker. I’ve nearly lost the house twice! We’re already drinking and eating far too much. Relaxing by doing a jigsaw of the Beatles!

Out there in Coronaland:

I’m in a bubble unable to see the rest of our family and friends which makes for a strange Christmas! They are all in their own bubbles. The whole country is one huge froth!!

It seems that we are pariahs. The whole world has shunned us and placed us in quarantine. We are trebly unclean! We’ve not only received a dose of Covid, we’ve contrived to let it get out of control and it’s developed a mutant strain! I’m expecting the apocalypse shortly! They are telling us that it is highly likely that the vaccine will work against the new strain.

There are 1500 lorries all piled up unable to go anywhere – I bet a number of them have perishable goods! What a mess!

Life in the village goes on as usual. On our walks we meet neighbours and discuss how many new cases they’ve heard of. There’s quite a few now.

Son number two is not well and has gone in for a Covid test. We’ll see. He’s a teacher. A number of his kids have had the virus so it was only a question of time. If not now then shortly.

Son number one is a nurse practitioner in constant contact with Covid cases. He has already had the disease but has just been vaccinated. So he’s OK.

The rest of us are waiting. I’m hoping to get vaccinated soon in the new year so I can get back to normal. Just as long as the vaccine works on the new strain! Time will tell.

Our cases are still high – 33,364 new cases with 215 deaths. The army have been deployed around London to shoot anybody trying to get out. (I made that bit up – that’s not going to happen for a week or two).

Meanwhile our clown of a leader refuses to put Brexit on hold while we deal with the chaos. The blockade is creating massive pile-ups of lorries! They are telling us there won’t be food shortages though!. I think they are practicing for Brexit!! As far as the ERG (European Research Group – the extreme nationalists who are presently running the country) it doesn’t matter how many die or lose their jobs, how many kids starve, or how much it costs us – just as long as we leave the EU!!

Same in the USA – Trump is busy golfing and bitching instead of dealing with the pandemic – It’s still going at over 200,000 new cases and 2000 deaths a day!! Not that he gives a shit. Same with Bolsonaro and his ‘little flu’ another 500+ deaths.

In Vietnam and New Zealand there has only been 1 new case and no deaths. I was talking to friends in Tasmania – life is normal. They have no cases. They shut their borders in OZ and stopped travel between states. Tested and tracked. It worked!

Anyway, I hope you had a great Solstice and was out there frolicking to induce the sun to come back! It worked!

Stay Safe!!

Today’s Music to keep me SsSsSaAaaNnNnEEeeee in Isolation – Jimmy Reed

Jimmy Reed was special – that infectious beat and squeaky harmonica! I only managed to see him once but he was amazing. His songs were staples for the British Beat groups. They all covered him.

A great Blues guy. I shall enjoy playing his laid-back blues.

The Corona Diaries – Day 272

I took an early morning walk in the sunshine this morning. Everything seemed right with the world even though it isn’t.

Just to cheer myself up I went back home played Beautiful Freak by the Eels and read the newspaper!

It seems to me that we are in the midst of a self-induced shitstorm! The whole world is nuts!!

The genie is out of the bottle and won’t go back in!

As an intelligent species we behave like utter idiots – selfish, thoughtless, competitive and arrogant. Our complacency is our downfall.

This virus is no surprise. It has been predicted. We have no excuse. We should have been ready.

I watch the politicians dithering around, not thinking things through and coming out with unworkable solutions. Ever since Dominic Cummings went on his trip to Barnard Castle and flouted the rules – then lied about it – everyone has lost faith in anything the government comes out with.

It is easy to see the panic in their faces. They know that things are out of hand and it’s of their own doing. At the same time we’re dealing with Brexit. The idiots. Why didn’t they put that6 on hold until they’d dealt with the virus. They are well out of their depth.

This new strain seems to be much more contagious. It throws up other questions: is it as lethal? Does the vaccine still work on it? We’ll know soon enough. Meanwhile I see the fear in the politicians’ eyes.

They can’t organise anything – switching around. One minute they are threatening to fine Local Authorities for putting schools on distanced learning. The next, three days later, they are instructing all schools to do distanced learning. One minute they are castigating Labour for wanting a greater, more effective lockdown, days later they cancel Christmas. Pathetic.

On the last day of term they instruct schools to carry out mass testing – as if that is possible. It’s not. No trained staff, no ventilated areas, no time, no leeway. It’s a logistical nightmare. They talk glibly of volunteers as if they can be plucked out of the air. They have no idea of security. They have surrounded our schools with barbed wire and locked gates (community use went out the window) and demanded huge security checks – the next minute any paedophile or terrorist is invited in. Nonsense.

So our teachers are thrown into chaos on the last day of term – knackered, exhausted and stressed they now have to work through Christmas and New Year preparing lessons and sorting out how online teaching will work, how to tell the kids and how to organise mass testing.

If the government had organised themselves a week or two earlier it could have saved a hell of a lot of time and effort.

So, days before Christmas all the plans are up in the air. Families are told to stay home. Arrangements are cancelled. It would not have been so bad if this had not been obvious weeks in advance and measures taken!!

We are donkeys being led by donkeys.

Roll on Brexit – let’s fuck over what little is left.

I’m left thinking that we ought to do what America is doing – leaving it to the people. The intelligent will isolate and the stupid will kill each other off!

Ever since Cummings nobody believes a word that our Clown says and takes not the slightest notice!!

What a country we’ve become!!

I don’t think anybody really knows what they are meant to be doing.

Elsewhere, in places like New Zealand and Vietnam (and lots more) there are no deaths and life back to normal!

In the USA there’s another 251,447 new cases and another 3000 deaths.

Lunacy reigns!!

I hope there’s a reckoning for all this!!

Stay safe!!

Chris Riddle Cartoons – Covid

John Peachey sent me these through. I particularly like the hypocrisy of Lord Snooty – Rees-Mogg.

The Corona Diaries – Day 271

Today I have had another long drive. I have been playing Bob Dylan, Yawpers, Captain Beefheart, Nick Harper, Fleetwood Mac and Big Brother and the Holding Company. That’s given me an injection of energy.

When I arrived home I took my daily walk.

Out in Coronaland the clowns and morons are still in charge and the cloud of corona is dominating. In the UK we also have looming stupidity of Brexit as firms flee abroad and the jobless, homeless and hungry kids loom. But the good news is that there are more billionaires than ever! A lot of people are making a lot of money out of covid and Brexit!!

Having weighed up what our dappy politicians are saying and what our scientists are saying we have sorted out what we are going to do for Christmas.

The vaccine offers a way out but we’ll have to wait a few months! Until then I’m reducing my risks as much as possible.

The virus levels are too high to make it possible to have a normal Christmas. The risk is far too great.

We will meet up with our children and grandchildren outside to pass over presents. We will not be meeting up inside.

The exception to this is our younger son. He would be on his own over Christmas so we are absorbing him into our bubble like an amoeba ingesting food. He has taken a covid test (negative) and is isolating. We reckon the risk of taking in one person is acceptable.

If we get the disease then so be it. Life is risk. It’s all about how we responsibly manage it.

I certainly do not want to go down with this disease just before the vaccine makes life safer!!

Stay safe – the end is nigh!
