Reykjavik – Art and cathedrals.

We walked further up the hill looking for somewhere to get a bite to eat. Found a nice cafe and had a look round the impressive cathedral.

Lisbon – The Cathedral – Photos

We walked up the narrow streets to the cathedral. Inside it was massive.

We went up into the gallery where we gained an insight to the immensity of the building.

From the top there were views over the city.

Very impressive. These religious people sure do like to show off.

Malta – The Cathedral in Valetta – Photos

The Cathedral was wonderful.

I loved the floor with its skeletons – meant to scare you into fearing death.

The colours and patterns.

The ornate embellishment and paintings. It was meant to overpower and impress.

Look at all this – it has to be true.

Splendid.

There seemed to be a religious theme!

Photography – the St Petersburg Cathedral

The incredibly lavish artwork, gild and gold dome display the riches and power of the Church. It is both incredibly beautiful and disturbing. Like all religious buildings it is meant to intimidate with its scale and grandeur. The beliefs must have substance if they are connected to such an overpowering statement.

As an atheist and antitheist I merely lost myself in the beauty. The politics of religion I leave to one side.

This was certainly a place of stupendous wonder. But one cannot help but think how much misery it left in its wake.
